No Ex Before Marriage is the first book I have read by Portia MacIntosh, so I went into it without any real expectations. From the cover and synopsis, I expected a cute, fun read. I was a bit disappointed as this book was not for me.
First, I like Poppy and could only imagine her shock and horror at finding out that she was still married. We are not told at the beginning why she and Zac divorced, so you assume their marriage ended poorly. I was annoyed at how Poppy’s friends were treating her but appreciated that she was trying to make the most of the situation. I think her friendship with Kat was fun.
While this story is supposed to be about Poppy and Zac, we don’t meet Zac until the almost halfway point of the story. It’s hard for me to like him, given his current situation, and the way he handles the situation. I can’t say more than that without giving away spoilers.
I prefer clean reads, and not knowing this author, did not realize profanity would be in the book. That is on me. However, even without that, this was not my kind of story. I did not find it humorous, and it read more like a drama than a romantic comedy.
Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book. I was not required to provide a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
