** spoiler alert ** (view spoiler)[ Here’s a quick review after ghosting a few years because The Girl Who Could Fly holds a dear place in my heart. I can’t remember how many times I’ve retreated into I.N.S.A.N.E as a kid, imagining what kind of superpower I’d like to have. (*cough* I’m still not over Bella losing her powers *cough*)

I mainly enjoyed the first book because of the fantastic world building and how Piper learnt to accept her extraordinariness regardless of others’ opinions. Which is why I did not enjoy The Boy Who Knew Everything, when the plot became almost unrecognizable with the introduction of Max and Xanthia. What about I.N.S.A.N.E and the beings they were rehabilitating? How had the children grown and changed? What about characters like Jay? These were all left unanswered and I hadn’t expected much more of The Girl Who Fell From The Sky. But I have been pleasantly surprised and would like to offer a different perspective in the midst of the mostly negative reviews I have read here.

Piper losing her powers and being left out of superhero stuff was a turn off for many. But because of that, I think we got to focus more on Piper and the relationship she had with her friends, family and people around her. With that we have witnessed growth in the characters a lot of us have loved. Please, Lily being described as the next Coco Chanel; Kimber and Smitty talking about university applications? Idk if it’s just because I grew up with them, but it was so heartwarming to read about them pursuing their dreams and facing very real struggles lol.

I actually really enjoyed Piper’s dilemma - what is she if she cannot fly? I think a lot of us consider our worth by what we can do and what we have etc. — but are we not worthy just by being? Through the plot, I think the book addressed struggles with identity and Jimmy Joe and Rory Rae brought about the message that everyone is extraordinary in their own right, with or without powers. The scene where Piper flew again because she recognised this was so bittersweet because you could tell she had matured and reached another stage in her childhood.

Okay, and also the fact that Conrad asked Piper to the dance? God, could not have asked for anything better.

That being said, I still did struggle to see how Max and the people in Xanthia fit into the plot as anything more than a tool to keep it going. A lot of the way the plot was planned (giant bugs, Max’s random soliloquies) was just too random for me and I would have loved the series to simply have the kids struggle to be accepted and find mutual respect with people without powers. Sure, we could do some giant bugs, and I’d love to have them on missions, but I don’t think there was a need for a cheesy villain.

For what it’s worth, I think that the author did manage to wrap up the plot and I am thankful for dear characters which she has brought to life. So long, Piper and friends! (hide spoiler)]
