I had to update this review after reading comments by other people about the book. I hated, hated, hated the ending of this book. I would have given it 3 stars if the ending didn't make me so angry. I haven't been this pissed off at a book in a long time. I realize that a lot of people disagree, and they're welcome to their own opinions. I just did not like it. Does that mean it's not worth reading? No. I liked it up until the end, and it does provoke interesting discussions, so I'm not going to tell anyone NOT to read it.
SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT
Some people think the protagonist is alive at the end, others (like me) think that she dies. I think that the way she dies is really lame, too. Basically, it's like the book is saying, "If you've been kidnapped and abused for five years, then you're better off dead."
What? Really? There's no chance for rehabilitation? No hope of being reunited with your family? Or of having at least a semi-normal life?

Hm. I dunno. I thought the author was choosing to keep it intentionally ambiguous, sort of to leave the reader wondering about how "freedom" can mean different things, and whether or not it's always the best option.

I agree with the end. I got the feeling that she died at the end. I would have liked to have seen her return to her family.
I actually think it's completely clear that she dies at the end. I don't see anything ambiguous about it at all.
i thought it was pretty clear that she dies at the end, but unlike you, i thought it was actually a fitting ending. There's no way this girl could be rehabilitated. she was SOOOO fucked up. she was already showing sadistic and masochist tendencies. I mean, ok, maybe rehabilitation was possible, but it would have taken so much time and effort, and at this point, she just wanted to be free. And while it was bittersweet, she did get her wish, she was free. I don't think the ook was trying to say that people like her are better off dead though. I think it was just trying to paint a really dark picture.
my whole takeaway from the book was 1)gratitude, because for as much traumatic shit as i've been through at least it wasn't that bad. and 2) exposure. sometimes it's hard to look at all the really awful things in the world, shit like this, so i think books like this are written so that people can see how horrible the world can be, so they can do something about it, fight it. (but also, it's fiction, so if it gets too intense, you can close the book for a while). does that make sense? anyway, those were just my thoughts.
i do get being pissed that she didn't get a proper happy-ish anyway ending, a rescue and sent to a rehab facility or soemthing, but i don't think that would have fit with the really dark theme of the book.

Unpopular opinion here but the book was too short. I woukd have Ben more satisfied if he had taken Lucy and she escaped. The redemption of her telling Lucy to run wasn't needed. I didn't believe it. She didn't have nearly enough time to change her mind and in death? Unbelievable
