Unfortunately I didn't read the first book but I did enjoy this one anyway. Charles James is supposed to be dead but in reality he isn't. He missed his flight by a few minutes and the plane he was supposed to be on crash. He misses his ex-wife and decides to travel Route 66 to be with her. On foot. He sets off from Chicago to L.A. and meets many friendly people along the way. He also meets with a bicycle gang who robs him of all his money and cell phone. Without options he joins a group of migrant workers to get a bit of cash. Through his experiences he learns a deeper value of what life is all about.
