Winter in Paradise (Paradise, #1)

This is a quintessential Elin Hilderbrand read in a new setting: the island of St.John, BVI.
On New Years Day, Irene Steele learns that her husband, Russ, has been killed in a helicopter crash. Also dead are the pilot and a local woman. Irene and her two sons, Baker and Cash go to this paradise island to learn what exactly happened and why Russ was there. They soon learn that Russ was leading a double life, with a girlfriend, Rosie, and a magnificent villa. While there, they encounter Rosie’s best friend, Ayers, her stepfather Huck, and Rosie’s daughter Maia. All of them develop relationships that will impact them in different ways.
As usual, all the characters are well developed and portrayed. My favorite is Maia, precocious and wise beyond her 12 years. Baker and Cash come off as spoiled, entitled brats who are in constant competition with each other. Irene is almost majestic in the way she copes with her pain at each new revelation. Ayers and Huck are down to earth, big hearted people who find themselves in the middle of the Steele family drama.
The story ends in a bit of a cliffhanger. All the more reason to read the second book in this trilogy. I am really looking forward to returning to St. John and these characters.
A definite recommend if you want a well written light read.
