it was amazing
bookshelves: owned, historical-fiction, adult

I've been told by so many people that I need to read this book. It gets so much hype that I thought there was absolutely NO way it would live up to it. But it did more than that. It surpassed it.
My favourite books is a pretty exclusive list and it usually takes me a while to decide whether a book fits that list or not but this was an instant favourite. I absolutely adored it. Even just thinking about it now I am fighting back tears because this was such a beautiful and vivid story. I felt like I was with these characters through all of their terrible experiences and I just wanted to shelter them from it all. The women in particular, the sisters, were absolutely inspirational. They showed incredible strength in this terrible time and I loved seeing how women contributed to the war. This was just a story that really resonated with me. It has a special place in my heart for it was truly, beautiful.
If you like WWII historical fiction, or even if you don't, I encourage you to try this book out. I know I'm going to be encouraging basically everyone I know to read it.

Catrin Poole Hi Hailey. Have you read any of the Philippa Gregory books? I have just bought The Last Tudor by Philippa Gregory.

Alenka of Bohemia I thought this was fine. Not the best thing I´ve read from the war times though.

Călina Miron So glad you enjoyed it so much! I trust your reviews because most of the times I agree completely with the way you feel about a book. Can't wait to read this!

Amanda You sold me! I have GOT to read it now!

message 17: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Mousseau I just finished a wwII Nazi germany set book called the scent of secrets. I highly recommend. Just finished it.

message 18: by Caroline (new) - added it

Caroline I need to get this and read it now! Great review!

Samantha I am currently reading this book and am really liking it so far. You should check out Sarah’s Key! I had never heard of it but just read it a few days ago. It is all about the Vel D’hiv round up!

Laura I cried when I finished reading this book. I completely agree!!

Amanda Just finished at 2AM today and was BAWLING (definitely a wear-my-glasses-to-work day). I haven't been able to stop talking about it. Legit cried four separate times reading this, which is more times than I have probably in the last 6 yrs total. So incredibly moving, even for someone as emotionless as myself 😉

message 22: by Genni (new) - added it

Genni Pearce You should check out “The Great Alone” by Hannah as well! That book changed my life

message 23: by G.A. (new) - rated it 5 stars

G.A. Benoit Just finished this book tonight, per your recommendation, and I was sobbing. SOBBING! It’s been a few hours and I’m still wrecked. Jeez!!!!!

message 24: by beyz (new)

beyz OK, now, i'm really excited about this book.

Sumedha I agree with you!! The writing style makes me feel as if I was right there with them.

Mitali Excellent Review

Corrie I agree. This was fantastic. As I read the last chapter aloud to my husband, who I had given all of the cliff notes to throughout the last week 😂, I spoke through tears. It was SO good and I felt like everything was delivered with hope. SO good.

message 28: by Zuzana (new)

Zuzana Kunova absolutely agree with the review

Nanna Stacey You took the words right out of my mouth ! Instant favourite for me too and I also just felt like I was there with them rooting for them to survive.

Alida Winkler I loved this book!

Michael Ortiz I really wish, I wasn’t late to reading this, because now I want to talk about it and I’m years later haha. I thought it was a good book while reading and at the end I cried about 3 times while reading the last 2 chapters, maybe that’s considered one long cry, I don’t know. Either way I really liked this book!

Tanaka "Even just thinking about it now I am fighting back tears...". It's exactly what happens to me. I finished the book some months ago. It's in my book-shelf between many not-read-yet others but though tempted sometimes I still cannot open it to re-read this or that chapter/passage. Heartbreaking!

Lily McKILLOP Really?

Natalia Couldn’t agree more, so many people advised to read it that I resisted for a long time and now when I finally have read it I am sorry I haven’t done it sooner. Absolute 5 stars for me!
