really liked it

I liked it a lot, which helped propel me through 500 pages of back story. Toward the end, I did begin to get a little impatient with the many asides and began (gasp) skimming. Given that the opening sentence was "I was born twice first as a girl ... then again as a teenage boy in an emergency room" I was getting impatient for the ER revelation, which still hadn't happened two-thirds of the way into it. Indeed, it felt like the discovery was a little rushed and underplayed by the time it finally happened. (Also, the author shifts from past to present tense throughout, which I guess was his way of putting the reader in the moment during pivotal scenes, but nonetheless was not terribly subtle.)
