I know what you mean; I think after the beginning the plot seemed to float around a bit, plus lots of interesting things were introduced but weren't delved into deeply and so for me, it took a bit of effort to stay connected with the characters and what was happening to them.
The end is worth it. I struggled in the middle too, but just keep going!
The last half is much better ...
