Thankyou for the recommend Evelyn Keyes I literally couldn’t put it down.
The War Nurses is the unbelievable story of a group of Australian War Nurses who flee Singapore aboard the Vyner Brooke, as the Japanese arrive.
What happened to these nurses during their incarceration during World War 2 is horrific and another reminder that war is only a means to death and despair.
Based on the author’s own aunt, the stories in this book are true. They happened. Those nurse’s were brave and cut from cloth that sure was made of the toughest fabric on earth.
Paired well with a great big dose of respect ...more

I read this book during my travels through Carcassonne bringing the story to life even more. Straddling two time periods (but no time travel) we are submerged in the times of the Cathars in the 12th century and the legend of the Holy Grail. Chevaliers, fortress walls, healers, faith, mysteries and legends abound in the telling of this amazing period of Medieval time in Southern France. Jumping forward, we follow young archeologists, a secret society and the search for eternal life as they uncover the stories of the past.
I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and story of this book and look forward to the rest of the trilogy. The descriptions of life in Medieval France are fabulous and Kate brings the story vividly to life. I’m behind on this release as these books have been around for some time and there is even a TV series based on the novel’s, which I can now happily explore. Better late than never ...more

This made the story come to vivid life. This aside, Kate Mosse has nailed the Historical Fiction, female led, genre. The Burning Chambers winds you expertly & slowly through the religious wars and subsequent terror, horror, deception & destruction that occurred through the 15th century. It is full of history, bravery, intrigue and a touch of romance. I learnt a lot about the Catholic & Huguenot wars from 1562 - 1598. The French wars of religion lasted four decades resulting in bloodshed and massacre. The Joubert family are the central characters in the book leading the reader towards a mysterious family secret revealed towards the end. Lisa See is a master of historical fiction and I can see I’ll be reading anything she writes. Set in 15th Century China a young girl’s Grandmother is only a handful of female doctors treating women’s illnesses, many relating to childbearing, something a Chinese male doctor is forbidden to do. Yunxian’s Grandmother teaches her, from a young age, the pillars of Chinese medicine.
‘Looking, asking and listening, smelling, and pulse taking.” Grandmother nods her approval. “At every moment, you should be looking for patterns of disharmony.’
The story is enthralling but the relationships between the women in this book is where the real story lies. Their place in this culture, the archaic rules they must exist within and the boundaries they push against all have direct consequences in their lives. Yet, they strive and thrive, quietly to help the women in their lives.
‘You must always show them respect and let them think they know more than you do, while understanding that you can achieve something they never can. You can actually help women.’
At its core, this is a story of friendship, belief and strength. Women helping other women to break free of traditions that kept them bound to some of the most archaic medical ideas in time.

Hundreds of young girls working with radium to paint the dials of watches making them luminous with Radium were completely unaware that this insidious chemical would soak into their bodies causing sarcomas and cancerous cells to grow, wreaking devastating havoc with their bones and bodies. So many of the workers died, over so many years and the company kept denying Radium was poisonous and kept hiring girls to lip, dip & paint. This story is so important as it marks the beginning of Industrial protection of the worker. This was the beginning of accountability where laws were changed to ensure the employer protected and provided safe working environments for their workers. It’s such a travesty that so many young girls endured a horrendous death as a result of working with radium. Kate Moore has again chronicled an important story ensuring the SACRIFICES of these goths don’t go forgotten. ...more
