The author has explained the use of modern techniques of analysis to explore the history of each painting cross-referenced with exhaustive reference studies that were made as preparation. There were separate sections on da Vinci's scientific exploration in inventing tools to aid the painting process, the optical effects he achieved in the paintings, and even the innovations he brought to the paints and other medium that were used. Many photographs of the paintings, especially zoomed into sections to illustrate the highlights were amazing to look at. A fitting tribute and a useful guide to one of the greatest painters of western art....more

I am a fan of Okorafor's Afro-futuristic science-fiction, and it was wonderful to see further exploration of world-building along those lines. Although, for an imagined future African society, there were eerie similarities to current happenings in Tamilnadu when a boy and girl from two different tribes fall in love, and what results. This was not as good as Okorafor's Binti trilogy, but quite fascinating....more

Each chapter focusing on different characters doesn't satisfactorily end up creating a portrayal of the few main characters that are clearly intended to be of reader's interest. I enjoyed the narration and events whenever the setting moved to college life, it is clearly one of the stronger elements of the novel. Except for some portions when the narration shone with biting sarcasm, it was somewhat of a "mid" experience overall....more

Hiroshige shows masterly skill in composing the different views of interesting day-to-day affairs, and the people going about with them. The descriptions provided interesting information not only about the paintings but also the lifestyle of people from that period....more

However, it actually turned When I picked up this book, I expected it to be a collection of 50 popular world monuments with pictures and information. However, it actually turned out to be a collection of erudite essays pertaining to important challenges facing preservation of monuments in the world currently - whether it is due to natural disasters, rapid urbanization, war and related political reasons, etc. Using that framing, the book talks about 50 monument sites across the world, outlining the efforts by World Monuments Fund in preserving them and the ongoing challenges. The layout design of the pages could have been much better, it was largely confusing to follow the essay while also reading about the interspersed monument details....more

I thought that not having read the original made reading this better. I really liked the way the story dealing with aspects of friendship/love is narrated through the different characters and their voices. It is incredibly well-written, there were potions of it that made me feel why I couldn't write like this when I sit down to write....more

Accompanied by an erudite introduction, the book features hundreds of paintings showing the act of reading, and the rich history associated with books and tablets and other forms of reading material. It was a joy to look at various historical personalities in the process of reading, or just looking at shelves full of books trying to choose something to read. Some paintings had detailed notes explaining the context and importance, which was appealing. The grouping of the paintings was interesting, with similar themes from across different time periods illustrating a powerful sense of narrative meaning....more
