The Good
The conversations were humourous. I often found the back and forth engaging and overall entertaining. Emelia herself was a decent main character.
The Bad
Ben was a dick and the redemption came a bit too late. This book would have benefited greatly from having his perspective revealed. Also, ugh broody guys who literally manhandle women aren't attractive. WTF was with Derek? Clearly he was in love with her and she was 100% oblivious but this was never addressed. Also he had been dating someone for a few weeks... this book takes place over the course of 30 days and yet was written like 6 months had passed. EVERY secondary character was written like they were going to get their own book. Like their only purpose was to add a sequel. (The author's note at the end confirms that there will in fact be a new character specific book next year.) The drama in their backgrounds was barely touched upon and when it was it felt way undeveloped. The entire marriage drama was utter bullshit. Honestly WHAT? What the hell did they owe to these people that made them think they had to keep up the ridiculous charade? It was so weird. Also can we go back to the month thing please? Why was she always sleeping on the damn couch? It sounded like this place was huge and yet she couldn't find another fucking bed? She talks about the guest room and then is on the couch. WHY! Did you know Ben has straight white teeth and oh he also has lips! The lip thing is NOT unique to this book, lips are often overly characterized in books. But Ben's lips may get met more character development than a lot of other characters in this book. I hate when every friend/family member is described as being hot. I get it, it's fiction but come on be more creative!
Conclusion Do I think Lucy Watson is a bad writer? No. Do I think Lucy Watson is a bad storyteller? Sort of! This novels biggest shortfall was poor storytelling. It had SO much potential but as a story the plot was just... desperate?...more

I had such a hard time believing the tension between Presley and Nathaniel, I just didn't get why she claimed he was so mean to her. I mean, he wasn't, at all. He teased her... sort of, big whop. Was Presley so blind to things? Or was she just a moron, because I often found myself asking that question when she didn't see something RIGHT IN FRONT OF HER!
Truly I don't think the author is a poor writer. This book suffered from lazy editing (loads of easy to spot typos and a couple repeated sections), poorly executed drama and a rather insufferable main character. ...more

That being said, how the actual fuck did this get published as is? [image] No seriously, how? And how are the reviews so positive? The writing is bad, the pace is choppy, I actually thought a couple of times that I had a book that was missing pages and the plot itself is just flat!
This book was like reading a first draft. It seemed as though no one had bothered to edit or review it prior to sending it to print. To say I was surprised to see the HarperCollins logo on this is an understatement. It would make far more sense if it had been self-published. [image] One of the things I pay attention to most while I'm reading is how the dialogue is written. 99.9% of the dialogue in this book is bad. Like really bad. Like so bad I questioned if the author had spoken to another human being in their life. The banter between Elenor & Jackson had such promise at times but not good enough to make me overlook the long, rushed, unnatural bits of dialogue happening between every other character. [image] Oh, I had such hope for this book. The reviews were glowing and the plot seemed right up my alley but good lord... were my expectations not even close to being met. [image] Clearly I'm in the minority with this one but I will own this review. This is time I will never get back and it took so much effort to not DNF this one! However, I can not hold it against anyone who walked away well before the end! [image]...more

I hated how it jumped back and forth between time frames. I just kept thinking WHAT THE FUCK? Where are we now and do I care? No, no I don't!
I wanted the love story between Marco and Celia to be EPIC but it was lukewarm at best. It was as though you were looking forward to that steaming cup of coffee and then you got distracted and when you finally took a sip it was cold. Like, Oh hey you are good at what you do and I'm good at what I do. You're good looking and I'm good looking. Let's be good at what we do and look good together while we drink this leftover generic roast coffee.
There were so many publications that rated this book as one of the best of 2011 and I just don't see why... at all. Reading it was like having my teeth pulled while being kicked in the head by a mule.
I wanted to like it, to rave about its brilliance. I wanted to tell everyone I knew that this book is stunning in every way. However, I think now if someone asks me I'll look at them, shake my head and eerily whisper, "You've been warned."...more
I hate the way Jodi Picoult writes. I lose track of what character she's writing about and then I realize I just don't give a damn. I hate the way Jodi Picoult writes. I lose track of what character she's writing about and then I realize I just don't give a damn. ...more
