Rendon brings the whole community of the Red Pine Reservation to life. Quill and her two friends, her family and community members. As Quill works to solve the mystery of a scream she heard from the woods, she and her family members are put in danger. I love how the women in the community band together, I also love how Rendon talks about the impacts of multiple traumas on a community--so many that one can not be processed before the next arrives. This is an important story to tell. I want to read her other books, as well as find out which organizations she supports, because clearly this is based on real and recent history....more

I am currently two years into learning Brazilian zouk partner dancing, an activity that fills me with bliss but is not easy. This book gave me the tools I need to improve my skills by doing the right kind of practice, and making sure that I get feedback. Just as important, it knocked the idea out of my head that there is a limit on how good I can get, because I don't have "natural talent." Now the sky is the limit and I'm going all out on deliberate practice. Because it doesn't matter that I started dancing in my fifties, that I don't have any history of doing this kind of body movement, and that there are people who are so much better than me. I see the path ahead, laid out by this book, and I am excited to pursue it....more

It felt like it was in a different universe, one too reminiscent of the TV show Lost, and don't get me wrong, I loved that series. But it is not really "Thistle Grove." Still, I love that she covers the kind of real life characters and situations that are rarely covered in fiction, and with so much empathy. ...more

I find myself wondering why the author didn't just make it one big novel with separate sectons but it is kind of fun reading it this way. I recommend her books to all of those high school students who want a book of 150 pages or less for summer reading. But, I also recommend to sci-fi readers in general, to introverts, and especially to fans of AI. ...more

Also to lovers of AI/futuristic books and lovers of Becky Chambers....more

I'm amazed that the world of this book is entirely different to either of her others, and yet it feels just as real. This time it is set in the academic/scientific community of Boston. As always there is a lot of research behind this book--she has clearly thought deeply about the issues involved. But it's not an issue book. The characterization is strong and the plot is interesting. This one does move a little slowly, I don't mind that. I recommend listening to it, the narration by Lisa Flanagan is very good....more

This is the second book of hers that I have listened to, and I love her deep characterizations, the way that she brings working class characters to life. Her novels have a strong sense of place, and go in-depth into social issues. At the same time, she manages a suspenseful story with an engaging plot. In this story, she does a deep dive into the fentanyl crisis, corrupt police, sex workers, sexual abuse and addiction. It's heavy, but never too much because she makes you care about the characters. I recommend the audiobook version....more

Her books have both excellent character development and plot, interesting social commentary and heart. They are never depressing, and at the same time, they are not light. Her books always make me both cry and laugh. Definitely listen if you can, hearing it in an Australian accent makes it even better. These nine perfect strangers are not strangers to each other or to the reader by the end of the book....more

You might think it's a beach read from the cover but it is not. It is a book about the history of a place, and the different generations who have lived there, including the indigenous people who were there first. I like all of the details of historical research that she throws in here. It is also a story about a woman who is separated from her husband, and facing hard things from her life and past. Sullivan's writing style isn't anything special, but I like her stories....more

I didn't think I would like it at the start, when I realized it was going to be another multiple point of view books with a million characters, and I didn't really like the writing style or the characters at first. But they all grew on me and by the end I was really attached to them. I love how she created a speculative fiction, "What if" scenario yet it is completely believable. I loved also the supportive relationships in this book--romantic and family relationships that are not loving and not toxic. Again and again in fiction we see the toxic relationships, the same sad, dysfunctional relationship dynamics. Liane Moriarty is doing something different in her fiction, and I find it really refreshing. I'm not sure I've ever read a book with mother-daughter and in-law relationships like this one. And a book with women characters who love their careers. Her references are all so contemporary too. This was thought provoking and fun and I think it would be an excellent book club choice. I listened to the audiobook and recommend that format....more

It is written as a collection of emails and texts related to a crime, so you get to know all of the characters through these communications. One of the main contributors to the correspondence is completely annoying and her communications are just not believable. Some readers will probably enjoy piecing together the crime from the clues in the written communication, but for me, it just made for an unpleasant and shallow reading experience. I kept going out of inertia, and skimmed a lot near the end....more
