I'd seen Reacher the TV show before reading it, and had questions about Blind Blake and some other things. Main characters always feel a bit blah, underdeveloped at first, and the book is like that-- though Reacher is very information- focused so he can kind of get away with that. The concept is intriguing, with a former military investigator who's somewhat of a nomad, for a series that isn't going to involve 30+ murders (or however per book) in one area......more

I found Sam to be a desperate woman, one who seemed to not have the sense to question both sides of the situation, after knowing little about the man she was obsessed with. A woman who fell in love with a convicted murderer, through letters, and moves from England to the U.S., to be near Dennis. At least, it sounds desperate to me. (But I question a lot of things men say and do, so maybe it's just me.) I had to wonder if there wasn't more to Sam, if she wasn't a little messed up... Did she expect that Dennis would ever be exonerated? Spoiler alert: Was she trying to get pregnant when he did? By a convicted murderer? If she didn't suspect he was entirely honest, trustworthy and innocent, as the title suggests of her... Just made me question how innocent she was, if it was just an appearance.

The idea that cognitively challenged people could be smarter, and whether they should undergo a surgery to make them so (IF it existed), is an interesting concept. The ramifications can only be realized once we've tried something, I suppose... I wanted more of the book, more than the basic details of a man's life, more description of the other people in his life -- though I suppose that could've been intentional, if we imagine that a person like Charlie might not acknowledge those richer details of people. The connection between Charlie and Algernon brought to mind the connection between the main character and the mouse in "The Green Mile," after John Coffey healed them; only in Flowers for Algernon they became depressed and returned to their previous state, whereas in The Green Mile, they seemed to have drunk from the fountain of youth (though I don't remember what happened to the dying wife).
