Four years ago, a scandal cost Miss Katrina Denby everything. Now, companion to the irascible Lady Tesh and in possession of wonderful friends, she believes her luck has finally changed. Until the man responsible for her ruination returns to England and promptly dies in a fall from her bedroom window. Now the life she had begun to build for herself is in shambles. And not only is she ostracized and vilified, but her friends are suffering as well because of their association with her. Katrina will do anything to gain respectability again and protect those she cares for. But her plans to marry one of the few men who will still have her despite the stain on her name and lack of fortune are thrown into turmoil with the arrival of the only man Katrina ever loved. A man who is now about to become engaged to another.
Sebastian Thorne, Duke of Ramsleigh, was a carefree rogue when he first met and began to fall in love with Katrina. But his father’s horrible actions forced him to give up on his dreams of a future with her. Now, after years of trying to save the dukedom, there is only one option left: to marry, and marry well. But though he has nearly secured the woman—and her fortune—necessary to protect the people who are counting on him, his future father-in-law sends him on one final errand to earn his blessing. What Sebastian doesn’t expect while seeing that job through, however, is Katrina—or that his feelings for her have not faded. In fact, they have only grown stronger, Katrina’s hold on his heart even more powerful than before. With both of their futures on the line and so many lives at stake, will their passion for one another lead to the ruin of them both—or give them a happiness they never dared to dream of?

What’s a Duke Got to do with it by Christina Britton Synneful Spinsters series #2. Historical romance. Can be read as a stand-alone. Kristina Denby has fallen from the ton, through no fault of her own. However, this is a historical society, so she carries the blame in the eyes of many. Sebastian Thorne, the Duke of Ramsleigh is also broke because of his father’s gambling debts, but the title still gives him status. He intends to marry a woman with a dowry so he can help his own family, workers and townspeople to overcome the poverty trickled down. Both are temporary members of Lady Tess’s household and their long ago blooming love interest is rekindled and cannot be denied, though it means sacrifice beyond just themselves.
Parties and dances and outings are just the method of socializing for a purpose. It’s a game of moving pieces, isn’t it? At least one evil villain tries to exert his will, while the innocent deal with the details. Romance - so remember, falling in love trumps all. This story is a feel good, underdog winning the man and the hearts of the readers. Smart heroines with moxie and backbone asserting their independence and using head and heart for all.
This story incudes an overgrown and huge puppy that provides comedy throughout. Excerpt: “In the next instant Mouse’s great snout, given a clear shot to that body part he loved most, arrowed straight for the duke’s...nether regions. And with a strangled “Uargh!” the duke doubled over, dropping like a felled tree.” Excerpt from What’s a Duke Got to Do With it by Christina Britton
Well…alas. I knew going in that the “I love you but I must marry another to save my estates as they were ruined through no fault of my own” plot set up is definitely not my favorite, but I’ve loved her past books, so I was hoping Christina’s spin on it would work for me. I’ve said it before, but the self sacrifice really does me in! Does that make me a bad person? Yeah probably lol but 💁♀️
All of their getting to know each other happened before the book even began. The rest was them just pining for each other without much conversation different from “I must marry someone else, here’s why…” it got very repetitive and rather painful. Her prospects were terrible, he kept fretting that he couldn’t be the one to marry her, and then they both just looked mournful the entire time. I felt terrible for the two, but in the kindest way possible, shit or get off the pot.
I wanted Katrina to show some more anger at the people who put her in this situation, rather than shouldering the blame. I understand her, but it just got to be a lot. And him! He kept saying “I just want you to be happy, Katrina” but my dude! how in the world do you think that’s possible. Just be quiet you just keep digging the knife in!
It’s a good book, and I think most readers will have a great time with it. For me, however, I don’t even think it was intensely angsty or dramatic even, it was just like 85% of two characters loving each other and thinking they couldn’t be together. Knowing that though, it may be a good choice for someone just getting into historical romance, as this would be a good introduction to forbidden love. When the two main characters are nice people, it makes the book a cozy time nonetheless.
Overall, seeing as I generally don’t like books along the same lines, this one did have many parts I liked: the charming Isle of Synne, the meddling Lady Tesh, some truly humorous moments (Mouse was the key factor in all of them lol), and a lovely friend group. I definitely still love Christina’s writing and I didn’t hate the book or the characters, it just wasn’t a plot I enjoyed. That said I’m definitely excited for winter 2024!
⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 🌶️🌶️*/5
*2ish explicit scenes, but pretty short and low on detail.
Also what did that dude come back four years later to climb in her window again? Of course I know ~why~ but it was very random and felt kinda like a loose end.
Thanks to the publisher for an advanced and finished copy! All opinions are honest and my own.
Rather a harried tale of second chance romance. Why harried you ask? Because our poor, put upon heroine is embroiled in a scandal when some lord decided to climb in through her bedroom window and her brother suffers after a duel with the miscreant. Miss Katrina Denby leaves London and ultimately finds a measure of peace and happiness on the Isle of Synne as companion to Dowager Viscountess of Tess. Only to have that come crashing down as that same (crazed?) worthless lord tracks her down, attempts to once more climb into her bedroom, only to fall to his death, Katrina knowing nothing about it until she’s awoken by the kerfuffle below her window. And what does the local vicar do? Claims Katrina is a fallen woman and all should shun her. Which they do! Four years ago Sebastian Thorne, Duke of Ramsleigh, had just been about to approach his friend Katrina about his feelings for her being more than friendship, when he was called home. His father had died. Sebastian was caught up in settling his father’s scandalous debts. Now he is about to marry an heiress, Diane Bridling, to bring the dukedom, and its dependants, about. A heavy burden! His perspective father-in-law, Lord Cartmel, has an odd request before giving his permission for Sebastian to marry his daughter. He wanted Sebastian to take his son Harlow Bridling, to stay with an old acquaintance the Viscountess of Tess. The hope being that the distance would break Harlow’s relationship with an actress, Miss Mirabel Hutton. So a chance meeting four years later between Katrina and Sebastian is already in the cards. We know that this time, somehow, someway, they will not go quietly into the night! An engaging tale indeed!
A Forever (Grand Central Pub.) ARC via NetGalley. Many thanks to the author and publisher. (Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.)
This is a second chance romance between two formerly-popular members of the ton whose reputations have both been blighted by scandal. On the night Sebastian (now duke, formerly duke's heir) was going to declare himself to Katrina, both were hit by unexpected blows. Sebastian's father passes away, and it's revealed that the dukedom was propped up by a fake investment scheme. Katrina is the victim of an attempted abduction that not only ruins her reputation, but has serious consequences for her brother's future, too.
Four years later they're thrown together again. Their feelings are as strong as ever - or maybe stronger, because they know they can't act on them. The book is mainly focused on the inescapable gravity pulling Katrina and Sebastian together while they try desperately to keep apart. We appreciated that they were both honest with each other and never tried to hide the truth of their feelings. We also liked Katrina's friend group, the Oddments, who supported her through all of her trials. We have to admit that we saw the twist coming at the end from the very beginning, but we were satisfied with the timing of the reveal!
Pick this one up if you're in the mood for a cozy historical with plenty of pining and decent, honest characters.
This objective review is based on a complimentary copy of the novel.
What's a Duke Got to Do With It is a Regency romance novel by Christina Britton. It is the second book in the Synneful Spinsters series, but it can be read as a standalone.
The story follows Katrina Denby, a young woman who has been unlucky in life and love. Three years ago, she was compromised by Sebastian Thorne, Marquess of Marsten, heir to the Duke of Ramsleigh. Sebastian left her without a word, and Katrina's reputation was ruined.
Now, Sebastian is back in town, and he's determined to make amends for his past mistakes. He offers to help Katrina find a suitable husband, but she's not so sure she wants his help. She still loves him, and she's afraid that if she gets too close to him, she'll get hurt again.
As Sebastian and Katrina spend more time together, their old feelings for each other resurface. But there are still obstacles in their way, including Sebastian's duty to his family and Katrina's own fears and insecurities.
What's a Duke Got to Do With It is a well-written and engaging romance novel. The characters are complex and relatable, and the story is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. I especially enjoyed the way Britton explores the themes of forgiveness, second chances, and self-love.
If you're a fan of Regency romance novels, I highly recommend What's a Duke Got to Do With It. It's a story that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.

Katrina Denby and Sebastian Thorne's romance cut short four years ago, on the night Sebastian asked Katrina for a dance. He had to leave immediately because of his father's demise. Then taking care of the dukedom because clearly, the trope of his-rom is the father usually leaves debt to his sons. Meanwhile, Katrina is forced to leave to town after being involved in scandal NOT by her own making. One of her suitors climbed into her bedroom, and of course is the woman's fault as she is considered the seductress (nothing really changed after 200 years)
Katrina and Sebastian meet again in the Isle of Synne, when Sebastian is accompanying the brother of a lady she has been courting, on the order of their father. He courts the lady because he needs the money to save the dukedom. Katrina, meanwhile, has been involved in another scandal (same suitor, now dead!) and has become more of pariah with people in Synne. The feelings are STILL there, of course. But circumstances are different now. Katrina doesn't have the means to bring into a marriage and Sebastian doesn't know how to work around that.
What I love from this series is how it features "kind" main characters. Not that other books have bad people, but these books don't really have big Alpha MC who huffs and puffs like wolves when showing their power and being possessive. For me, that's nice.
Katrina and Sebastian's romance are blocked with misfortunes. He needs the money, she cannot really give it to him. She needs someone to save her from scandal, probably by being married, but he is courting another woman. That's the big conflict. For some readers, this maybe tiresome. Because clearly, Katrina and Sebastian love each other. And they belong to one another. Heck, even her dog loves him! That's always a sign! And we have to put up with hundreds of pages for Sebastian to acknowledge that all he needs is Katrina?!
But I still enjoyed it. Like I said, these are two kind people. I loved reading all those feelings and longings between the two of them.
The author gives a way out in the end. I felt that the solution was too easy and predictable. I wish it didn't have to be like that. I liked Sebastian's initial idea for the two of them. I guess the author just wants to make sure that these two get everything...

I was so excited to read Katrina’s story. She’s been an intriguing secondary character, and I was so curious about her story and how she came to be Lay Tesh’s companion. Her story is heartbreaking, and yet she makes the best out of a terrible situation, one where those she depended on most failed her. Now embraced by Lady Tesh and a small group of women, Katrina has created a new life for herself. But when an old love comes back into the picture and a new scandal puts her reputation at risk, the new life Katrina has created is threatened.
Katrina’s life changed irrevocably, and her reputation is ruined through no fault of her own when a man tries to sneak into her window. With a tarnished reputation and no familial support, Katrina takes on the role of companion. Katrina is a strong woman who has been unfairly treated by society, and I think her story highlights the unfairness and inequity between the sexes at the time. She is a good woman, kind, sincere, and honorable, and yet she is treated and judged harshly for things she didn’t even do. Her story speaks volumes about gender roles and the rights of women.
Much like Katrina, Sebastian’s life is ruled by societal expectations and pressures. It’s clear that Katrina and Sebastian have feelings for each other, but because of life’s circumstances and a tentative betrothal to someone else, their reunion seems improbable. There’s a lot of pining and longing between Sebastian and Katrina, but their selflessness and honor threaten to keep them apart. I so rooted for this couple and hoped that they’d find a way to repair Katrina’s reputation and be together.
The secondary characters are dynamic foils to the protagonists, and I’m really curious about some of the other Synneful Spinsters. They are such a unique group of women, and each has a story to tell, I’m sure. I’m eager to see each of them find love and whatever else they’re looking for. And I love Lady Tesh! She is hysterical and intuitive and meddlesome, and she is so outspoken and endearing. There are great messages about friendship, found family, and sisterhood throughout the novel, especially as Katrina is rebuked and the women all stand with her.
I always enjoy historical romances by Christina Britton. They’re fun and entertaining, and the romances are always swoon-worthy!! Thanks to NetGalley and Forever Publishing for providing me with an advanced copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.
I might delete this review because I don't like giving 4-star ratings for ARCs because I worry it's not high enough (why? I don't know). Anyway, the writing is wonderful and Britton sure knows how to develop characters individually and then create swoony romance between them that is believable and romantic but also really unique from other books with perhaps similar tropes☺️
However: None of the following words were in this book: 😪 "cock" (nothing except for ch. 1 with the word "cocks" or the word "cocked" elsewhere in the book) "quim" "stradd" (for straddle & straddling... nothing) "suck" (only for "sucked the air out")
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good closed door romance (like a Mimi Matthews book) but when it's not closed door, I want all the vocabulary!!!
Full review to come, but these are just some thoughts that I wanted to include. Thank you so much for the eARC provided by NetGalley & Forever Publishing. All thoughts/opinions are my own.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ What’s A Duke Got To Do With It is the second novel in the Synneful Spinsters series by Christina Britton. I have fallen in love with the oddments, a group of best friend spinsters. This is Katrina’s story. Katrina Denby is a companion; she has escaped scandal, but it has followed her and ruined her life again. Sebastian Thorne, the Duke of Ramsleigh, has been regulated to a fortune hunter to save his failing Dukedom. Fate brings the couple who were besotted once a long time ago together again, yet fate is determined to keep them apart.
Poor Katrina! I felt so sorry for her. Her ruination was not her fault. It was maddening to witness how horribly her brother and the vicar treated her due to things out of her control. I usually detest a fortune hunter, but Sebastian had a heart of gold and was doing the only thing he could save the people dependent on him.
The secondary characters and Mouse, the dog, were wonderfully written. The struggle of wanting Katrina but not having her went on too long. Also, the ending felt too convenient; everything wrapped up quickly and easily. The writing was excellent, the dialogue sparkling, and the plot kept my interest. I loved the pure hearts of Sebastian and Katrina the most. These two amazing people in horrible circumstances deserve their happily ever after! This is a fantastic addition to an eye-catching series that is turning out to be outstanding.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book through Netgalley and the Publisher. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is the second book in Christina Britton's Synneful Spinsters series, and this one focuses on Katrina Denby. She is the scandal plagued companion to the incomparable Lady Tesh.
When Sebastian Thorne, the Duke of Ramsleigh suddenly arrives on the Isle of Synne, he and Katrina are reacquainted after their ill-fated courtship.
I enjoyed this second chance romance. It was lovely seeing Katrina and Sebastian deal with their past and their mutual feelings while trying to fix their current situations.
This was a very sweet, low angst romance that I highly recommend.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.
This is the tale of the most unfortunate woman in the world. Seriously, if bad luck had a face, it would be that of our heroine, Miss Katrina Denby. Although it seemed almost comical, in a dark humor sort of way, I was instantly drawn to her as a character. She had to endure so much during a time that had very little sympathy for women. And then enters our hero, who somehow has also fallen on quite a bit of bad luck in a short time. Ultimately, these two embark on a romantic journey of second chances, with a dash of forced proximity and a strong helping of found family. The Isle of Synne has solidified its role as the island of misfits and outcasts - I love it!
The last thing Miss Katrina Denby expected to find outside her bedroom window was the body of the man who has ruined her four years earlier. As if life wasn't hard enough being shunned by her brother and working as a companion when she used to be the diamond of the ton, now she must revisit her trauma every day while the local townspeople shun her for it. Sebastian Thorne, Duke of Ramsleigh, was her first love, so things get even more complicated when he shows up on the doorstep of her employer with a young lord in tow. Especially when that young lord is the brother of Sebastian's near-betrothed, a woman he doesn't love but whom he must marry to save his estate and sisters from financial ruin. The last thing either of them need is romance in their lives, but the sparks that simmered beneath the surface years ago have come back to life once more. Now the next step is to let them die...or breathe life into them again.
Both main characters were easily lovable, albeit at times with a pitying sort of lens. Poor Katrina just could not catch a break, and even though she had found tremendous support with her employer and her friends, she hurt from the fact that her only remaining family wouldn't speak to her. Her brother, dear reader, was the absolute worst. He deserved to lose an arm, and I don't say that lightly. It's a long fall from being the social butterfly of all the parties to being the pariah hidden away out of sight, and Katrina managed herself well with grace and humility. But she couldn't help it when her heart wanted Sebastian. Sebastian never forgot Katrina, but after his father's death left him with more debt than he could reasonably manage, he struggled to stay afloat. He had a hard enough time rescuing himself, let alone helping Katrina with her dilemma. Things hadn't exactly improved over the last four years, and although he felt a deep passion for his first love, he knew she didn't have the funds to help his family. Yep, he was a gold-digger...albeit one whose motives were understandable. Of course, as with all romance, love finds a way. And if you get towards the end of the book and wonder if her brother will ever get what's coming to him, don't worry - he does!
**I received a free copy via NetGalley and this is my honest review.**
Four seasons ago Katrina Denby was the toast of London & was falling for a Marquis, then one horrible night he was called home & her reputation was ruined when a man entered her bedchamber. Now the last thing she expected to find in her garden is the body of the man who ruined her three seasons ago. No matter that his death is a tragic accident, he fell whilst climbing to her bedchamber. With two scandals now hounding her, the best she can hope for is a hasty marriage of convenience—until her first love shows up in the drawing room, reminding her of all the reasons why she wanted a love match. Sebastian Thorne, Duke of Ramsleigh, knows what he has to do to save the dukedom from the crushing debts and scandal his father left: marry and marry well. He’s picked the lady, too—a baron’s daughter who has a large dowery. But seeing Katrina again makes him want to throw all those perfectly laid plans out the window. A very well written book with strong characters & a story that tugged at my heart strings. I loved Sebastian from the start – he told Katrina he had to leave. I also loved Katrina & my heart bled for her, I'm so so glad she had the wonderful Lady Tesh in her court. It’s not a light hearted read, although there is some humour but it highlights how easily a woman could fall from grace through no fault of her own. I loved that Sebastian & Katrina were honest with each other & loved that they fought to keep apart but their feeling just grew & grew. I was routing for Katrina from the word go & Sebastian was definitely her soul mate. Yes there’s angst but there’s also a love that won't be denied My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Reading the first book in this series I was really excited for this book, I loved the friends in this story and couldn’t wait to get another story. I loved the first book so much I couldn’t wait.
This story starts off showing a little bit of what happens between Katrina and Sebastian before tragedy strikes and everything goes downhill. They were friends and becoming more than friends they were in the beginning stages of a courtship.
Katrina is shunned out because of a man that is obsessed with her, even though she isn't to blame for the situation everyone shuns her and turns their back on her, I mean after all a man climbing into her bedroom window to attack her is her fault right? 🙄
Ok fine so she's run out of London and finds herself in Synne. Which is just fine seeing that she's created a new life for herself, but guess what the same man shows up trying to climb into her window again and is pushed out but her dog. He dies and again Katrina is blamed and shunned now by the people in Synne.
Sebastian is also embroiled in scandal because of his late father who basically scammed people and took their money. So Sebastian is working his way out of debt and trying to pay back all the people that got their money stolen.
He's been working hard to bring his family of the scandal his father caused and she been working on her reputation and staying low that they never really knew what happened with the other nor did they ask around or try to find out.
This had all the angst and turmoil that I was looking for and characters that I already know and love. So I was so ready for this book.
It started out really great and with a lot of potential but it went downhill from there. There was so much repetition that I had to start skimming the story.
All Katrina did the whole story was blame herself for the "scandal" she cause and she cant get past it. She wont stand up for herself, she just takes everyone's crap and keeps blaming herself.
And all Sebastian does is think about how he can't have Katrina and how much he wants her. And the whole story just keeps on going this way.
There is no backstory for either character, no explanations of any previous relationships with anyone for either of these characters. We don’t know why Katrina and her brother never had a relationship or what relationship Sebastian had with his father before he passed.
The story doesn’t even go into details about the previous friendship that Sebastian and Katrina had. Nor do we know why that man was so obsessed with Katrina and why he kept trying to climb into her window and we never find out why either.
Another thing I really couldn’t understand is why Katrina never spoke to her friends the oddmates. How do you consider them your good friends but tell them nothing about your life or what's going on?
There was just so many holes in this story that I was utterly let down. Not to mention absolutely no character development. I really wanted to like this book but I was so let down by it, I'm not sure if I'll keep reading the series now. I wanted to before this book.
The constant monologues about how much they both couldn’t have each other and how messed up their lives had turned out just got really boring after 75% of the book, I was ready to DNF at like 80% but I started skipping whole parts just to finish the book.
Then finally at like almost the end of the book Katrina finally stand up for herself only because Sebastian thinks she's worth it. She's friends with some feisty women but still is docile and self-blaming. I was so over it.
I really enjoyed this book. The main characters were lovely, although they were dealing with some difficult choices (bit of angst, my friends!). The setting was lovely, and I adore the group of friends and Lady Tesh. Also, any book with a puppy in it is alright by me!
I struggled a bit with how absolutely horrid some of the people were to Katrina. It became a bit frustrating, seeing the terrible choices she had to choose from. Still, overall it was enjoyable, and I can't wait to read the next in the series!!
Thanks to Netgalley for a copy of this ebook, and this is my freely given opinion.
I was a bit conflicted about this story. I enjoyed the dynamic of the ladies and friendships of the spinsters of the Isle of Synne, and the second chance - but felt like it was doomed not to be - romance between Katrina and Sebastian. But I found I had a strong visceral negative reaction to some of the characters and their actions. Of course, they were meant to be the villains of the piece, in essence, so really that is not a negative reflection on the story telling.
Katrina was at the top of her game, as a belle in Society. Beautiful, dowered, from a noble family. She had caught the eye of Sebastian, a Marquess at the time, and they were lightly flirting, and tentatively stepping towards courting. Sebastian was a cocky rakish man about town at this time, but starting to think that he wants to explore the relationship with Katrina, when he is suddenly called away to attend to his father, the Duke. While he is away, Katrina is felled by a massive scandal, where she is a victim of an unwanted admirer who invades her room, and even though nothing happens she is forced into the center of a massive drama that tears apart her family, ruins her reputation, sends her brother down a destructive, despairing spiral, and sees her exiled to the Isle of Synne, penniless, and taking on employ as the companion of Lady Tesh.
Sebastian is ignorant of all this, because when he was called away all those years ago he ends up in his own spiral of despair and his own family scandal which forces him to inherit an impoverished, indebted duchy, to care for his sisters, and to repair his family reputation which was destroyed by his father's gambling, and actions leading to defrauding other members of Society.
Sebastian has no choice but to try to wed an heiress for wealth, but he is being manipulated by the future bride's father, who uses Sebastian to babysit his wayward son, who has fallen in love with an unsuitable woman. He essentially wants Sebastian to rusticate with the son on the Isle of Synne to help the son forget about his mistress, whom he wants to take to wife.
Synne becomes the romantic backdrop where Sebastian and Katrina rediscover their attraction, find out what they have lost over the years, and fall in love again. But they despair of anything coming from their love, as they both have such burdens to carry - Katrina's reputation takes a hit again as her nemesis from the past returns, and she is being torn to shreds by the Synneful citizens, amongst other ills, and Sebastian has to wed his heiress to save his family.
A charming love story, with wonderfully quirky, and lovingly interfering and intrusive friends. But poor Katrina is so very much wronged and forced to suffer for the actions of others, and then to shoulder their blame and downfalls - the unwanted suitor... her brother and his downfall. Their behaviours directly caused her misery and she had no fault but then was forced to suffer over and over again, and be treated so poorly by others for things that were outside of herself. The injustice of it made me livid. Admittedly, I have angsty angry relationships right now with some brother figures in my life, so that may be colouring my opinions a bit (seriously, if I were to find out my brother in law died tomorrow, I would likely want to dance on his grave.) But her brother needed a serious kick with steel toed boots to the bollocks for his treatment of her and then to show up when she gains something positive. He needed a good club upside the head and there was no satisfaction on that front. At least the dog should have been allowed to bashed his man-bits to pieces a couple of times
Damned patriarchal world where the women have to suffer from the stupidity of men!
I absolutely adore the fictional island of Synne and the community that inhabits it. I look forward to each book that Ms Britton creates that inhabits this magical island. In What’s a Duke got To Do With It we finally get hear the backstory of Lady Tesh’s companion Katrina Denby and her giant loping dog, Mouse. Katrina first appeared way back in book 1 of the Isle of Synne and has been one of my favorite side characters in every book since. What I wasn’t expecting was the heartbreaking reason why Katrina has been reduced to working for a living. We always hear about regency debutants being “ruined” by the smallest of infractions or by being “overcome ” by passion. But in the case of Katrina, she is the innocent victim of what seems to be an unstable Lord who was sort of a stalker. All this on the eve of what might have been a declaration between her and Sebastian who is now the Duke of Ramsleigh. Well it’s 4 years later and oh so much has happened to both of them and where our story picks up it seems that the current situation for both of them is somewhat hopeless. I really feel for them both as it seems that both of them did indeed hold a true affection for each other that never had time to blossom. In what seems to be a fruitless 2nd chance love, how can these two find any happiness? Ms Britton goes to battle for these two and finds a way for each of them to find the strength to stand up to the strictures of the day and what “society” thinks they should do. This book is a wonderful addition to the Synne series and we get a bit more insight to some of the other “Oddments” ladies as well. I was kindly given an ARC by NetGallery for my unbiased review.
What’s a Duke Got to Do With It? I really enjoyed reading this beautiful story about two souls who are seeking the same ending goal of marriage. Kristina and Sebastian are the main characters in the book. Their goals are the motivating factor the pushes the book to move forward. The goal is very logical to their story during this time period. I have to say that I absolutely loved the humor that transpires in the story. Mouse is my favorite character. He moves through the book causing chaos here and their, but it’s the love that he has for his mama (Katrina) and Sebastian the entertaining and sweet. The background story is very entertaining. The writer has done a wonderful job of telling a story about love and romance. I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I was not expecting to get so much into my feelings reading this story, but oh well it happened! This is my introduction to Christina Britton and I am happy to report that I will keep reading and go back to catch up with the previous couples since it seems like she created a little world on Isle Synne!
The story between Sebastian and Katrina was vere sweet, full of longing and yearning. They met four years prior during the Season and then because of external reasons (and scandals!!) they lost touch with each other and meet again later on in their lives when everything is quite chaotic for both of them.
It was evident from the first moment they see each other again that the feelings that once were tenuous and new are still there and over the course of the story they grow stronger and stronger.
I love a pining hero and the name Sebastian so imagine how much I enjoyed reading his pov eheh. Katrina was such a sweet babe she deserves all the happiness in the world with her energetic doggie Mouse.

I really enjoyed this one, but I think it drove home the patriarchy of the time more than any other historical romance I’ve read. Katrina has been ostracized not only in London, but also in the close knit community on the Isle of Synne. Katrina has done NOTHING wrong, but cannot get past the innuendo surrounding circumstances that happened in her midst.
This was a sloooow burn, second chance romance. I wish we had gotten to see a bit more of Katrina and Sebastian. The shunning she endured made me so sad. And then the ending tied up a little too quickly and neatly for all the suffering she endured.
At least we had Mouse, the big lovable dog, to provide some comic relief. And I loved Lady Tesh, the irascible dowager Viscountess, who always knows more than she lets on and seems to be pulling strings behind the scenes.
Great storyline though and a wonderful and well deserved HEA!
For a book with two leads I generally liked, I found this a bit frustrating. I think the pacing was a bit off - this is really an external obstacles book, and given the supposed strength of those external reasons why they couldn't be together, it was a bit frustrating to suddenly have Sebastian think "well, what if I got around that issue" at the very end of the book. I felt very much like: okay, great, but why wasn't this something you thought about 200 pages ago!?
Unrelated to the main romance here, while the supporting cast as a whole was really very strong (I hope Miss Bridling gets a story one day), the way a few of the side characters who were terrible (the reverend and Cartmel, specifically) magically fixed their bad opinions/behavior after one conversation was a bit much. And as to the awful side characters who aren't "redeemed," I don't think either Katrina's brother or Lord Landon suffered enough.
The Isle of Synne and its related spinoff have become one of my favorite historical romance series in recent memory, and Britton's latest book is no exception. The seaside locale + the angsty second-chance romance between Katrina and Sebastian was HITTING from the jump, and while it seemed more like they were getting in their own way about giving into their feelings as opposed to navigating external threats, the journey to them realizing they needed to be together was a delight. I picked this one up after being stuck in a terribad reading slump, and it did the trick instantly.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this edition from the publisher via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This wasn’t my favorite book by this author. While I liked that there was good character development, I wasn’t very convinced on the romance. I normally enjoy second chance romance if they are done correctly; however, I just wasn’t feeling this one. I like this author’s writing style. But I do feel like I wanted more from the plot because ultimately it felt like not much happened in the book. I am looking forward to the next book in the series though.
This book was quite sad. Katrina went through a lot, & not by anything bad that was her fault. So many people turned their backs on her when she didn’t deserve it. Thank God for Sebastian, who has been in love with her for four years, but through no fault of his own had to forget her. Circumstances have brought them both together again & they can’t deny they still have feelings for each other, as hard as they try to. I love that Sebastian came to Katrina’s defense & showed a vulnerable side that many didn’t back then. I also loved seeing more of Lady Tesh, I like her character. I’m glad that Katrina finally stood up for herself, but she just made me sad throughout this story. Happy that they got their HEA.
Katrina Denby, companion to Lady Tesh, finally gets her happily ever after in What’s a Duke Got to Do with It. Katrina came to the Isle of Synne already having suffered a scandal and now the same man whose actions ruined her name years ago is found dead trying yet again to climb into her window. Katrina’s reputation is in tatters and her only hope of not only salvaging her name but protecting those she loves from being hurt by association is to marry. Of course, that’s when the only man she ever wanted to wed comes through the door.
Sebastian, Duke of Ramsleigh, fell equally hard for Katrina years ago. But just as he was about to confess his feelings his father died, leaving him mired in debt and scandal. He’s still struggling to find enough money to support those who depend on him and the only way to do so is to marry for money. Which is when the penniless woman of his dreams comes back into his life…
What I liked best about What’s a Duke Got to Do with It is that Sebastian and Katrina are both such kind characters. They have good hearts and sweet natures; neither of them deserves what life has thrown at them. It was hard to see Katrina be hit over and over without cause, even knowing that author Christina Britton had to have the aforementioned happily ever after waiting for her at the end. It’s clear from the start that Sebastian and Katrina are meant to be, but love isn’t enough with the obstacles in their way. I adored them together and was rooting for them to find a way to make things work out so they could be together. Britton kept me guessing on how it would work but the end result was a satisfying one.
What’s a Duke Got to Do with It has a sweet romance, two protagonists who are easy to adore, and a host of supporting characters I enjoyed reading about. I love spending time on the Isle of Synne and I cannot wait to see what Britton has in store for Katrina’s fellow Oddments.
FTC Disclosure: I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
What's A Duke Got To Do With It by Christina Britton is the 2nd book of her Synneful Spinsters Series.
The title of this fabulous book made me think of this awesome song by Tina Turner - What's Love Got To Do With It... and honestly? I sang the whole time "What's A Duuuuke Got To Do With It..." 😅
This brilliant love story of Katrina and Sebastian felt like the coziest blanket and I just never wanted to be over.
Miss Katrina Denby had her fair share of scandals and is the companion of Lady Tesh now. Hoping for a good marriage to get back her reputation she never expected to see the man of her dreams again... years ago there was a special chemistry between her and Sebastian, but he had to take care of his family. Now he's back and the Duke of Ramsleigh... but can they continue where everything had to stop?
OH MY GOODNESS!!! I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK!!! 😍 Now I'd love to read it again and again and again and again! Their love story made my heart explode. As a hopeful romantic I want what Katrina and Sebastian have... true love. ❤️ They had to deal with impediments along their way... and... aaargh! I don't wanna spoil you! READ THIS WONDERFUL BOOK AND FALL IN LOVE TOO! ❤️
I really really really loved Katrina and Sebastian! Awwwww! What a couple!!! Great characters! OMG and I can't stop swooning about HIM!!! 😍😍😍😍 Ha! But I don't want to forget to mention all the other great characters like Lady Tesh!! Awwww! And MOUSE! Katrina's dog! He's a pure genius! LOL
So... What's A Duke Got To Do With It has it all! DRAMA, LOVE, HEARTBREAK, LAUGHTER, FRIENDSHIP, COURAGE and so much more! ❤️❤️❤️ I really really really loved this book, their beautiful love story and can't wait for more of this series - or more of Christina Britton generally.
I love returning to the Isle of Synne and being back with Lady Tesh and the friend group called the Oddments. Miss Katrina Denby has been a companion to Lady Tesh for four year. Prior to that she was involved in scandal where she was the innocent. But her brother rejects her afterwards and she and her giant lovable dog Mouse have lived with Lady ever since. For a second time scandal comes knocking at her window. Her friends and employer stand behind her but the locals are riled up against her.
Sebastian Thorne, Duke of Ramsleigh was smitten with Katrina years ago. There was flirting but no understanding between them. On the night of her scandal he was called home to learn he was the now the Duke and his father left the dukedom in ruins. He is planning to wed for money. The heiress of his intentions father sends him off on a personal errand before he gives permission for his daughter to connect to Thorne. He must go with her brother to the Isle of Synne and persuade the man to give up his infatuation with a London actress. There he is stunned to find Katrina and learn she never married.
I really enjoy Christina Brittons writing. And I love that Katrina and Mouse are already familiar characters if you’ve read Some Dukes Have All the Luck (Nov 2022). This is a second book in a second series set on the Isle and they are delightful. (It can be read as a stand alone.) I had a harder time with this one mostly because I was outraged at the treatment of Katrina and how long it continues. I do love when women stand up for each other and themselves.
Thank you to Forever (Grand Central Publishing) for the ARC via NetGalley and I am leaving a voluntary review.
Two people, scarred with rumors trapping them with soiled reputations, find themselves reunited after four years. Will the flame that started long ago flame to a full fledged fire?
Blurb: The last thing Katrina Denby expected to find in her garden is the body of the man who ruined her three seasons ago. No matter that his death is a tragic accident, the rumors are enough to kill any woman’s prospects. With two scandals now hounding her, the best she can hope for is a hasty marriage of convenience—until her first love shows up in her drawing room, reminding her of all the reasons why she wanted a love match. If only he weren’t already engaged. . .
Sebastian Thorne, Duke of Ramsleigh, knows what he has to do to save the dukedom from the crushing debts and scandal his father left: marry and marry well. He’s picked the lady, too—a baron’s daughter who is pleasant, if a little boring. But seeing Katrina again makes him want to throw all those perfectly laid plans out the window. The first chance he had with her, he chose his duty over his heart. Doing so again might prove utterly impossible.
I enjoyed this book, however; I am unsure how realistic it would have been for the time. While a person this day and age can see that a man trying to get into an unmarried woman's window was NOT her fault, I do not think that would have happened oh so long ago. Sebastian, as much as I enjoyed him, I think he would have been more selfish. Don't get me wrong, I am delighted that he was not, but "uppercrust" people were not known to be selfless.
I would recommend this book to other historical romance readers.
Thank you for allowing me an advanced copy in return, I am providing an honest review.
