The Girl Before Me

Rate this book
I switched on the bedroom light, casting a glow across the apartment. No one was there. But then the locks on my front door caught my eye. I thought I’d locked them both, but now one was open…

When I moved into the apartment with my little daughter Lily, it was meant to be a new beginning for us. We would be right in the heart of downtown, in a building with its own doorman. For the first time in a long time we were safe, away from my ex-husband.

But just as we settle into our new lives a letter arrives for someone called Annie. The neighbors tell me to ignore it. She’s just the woman who lived here before me, who moved out one day without a word.

Curious, I open it anyway and am shocked by what I read. It says Annie wasn’t safe. It said she needed to get out.

Now, I can’t escape the idea that someone is watching us. I feel I can’t trust my neighbors.

And I can’t help but think… Something happened to Annie. Something bad. And Lily and I are not nearly as safe here as I thought we were…

A totally unputdownable gripping thriller, perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell, Shari Lapena and Gillian Flynn.

Australian Annie Turner has made a number of bad decisions which leads to her American dream turning into a nightmare……Three weeks later Rachel Gleason and her six year old daughter Lily moved into the same apartment 4B, in a building in Lincoln Park, Chicago. Rachel is hopeful of a fresh start after a bad end to her marriage. She soon finds herself wondering about Annie and is magnetically pulled into the mystery of the disappearing tenant.

There’s a good tense initial start to the book with creepy, ominous overtones from both the building and the occupants of the other apartments. It builds slowly, it’s maybe overburdened with detail at times but it’s not uninteresting. The girl before me mystery deepens and it becomes very unsettling with some suspicious behaviour and you aren’t sure who is trustworthy. This is broadened to outside the building too with threats from several quarters, Rachel‘s entry to life in Chicago can’t be described as an easy ride so there is an intriguing vibe from several quarters.

The dynamics are done extremely well, ranging from the delightful between Rachel and Lily to the puzzlingly odd to the downright nasty.

I would say I think there’s a lot going on as it’s not just the mystery of Annie, it’s may be a bit much but it does mean there’s rarely a dull moment! There is some plot filling in for example, we get a tour around Chicago which though enjoyable, I’m not sure it’s entirely needed??

The plot starts to come together, the strangeness of the building and the tension between the occupants ramps up well with plenty of atmosphere and questionable behaviour. The ending is one I’m going to keep pondering on, it feels a bit contrived and I’m not sure I entirely buy into it and it certainly ends very abruptly.

Overall, despite my reservations it’s an enjoyable read, it keeps my attention and it’s full of atmosphere.

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Bookouture for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.

Moving. It's a new beginning. A chance to start over. An opportunity to meet new people.

Rachel Gleason and her daughter, Lily, have just moved into an apartment in Chicago. It's a chance to get away from her ex-husband and a building with a doorman, feels even more secure. But then Rachel gets her mail and there is a letter for Annie, the previous tenant who left abruptly one night and no one has seen or heard from her since. Rachel decides to open it and reads the warning within telling Annie that she is not safe.

Then little things begin to happen, Rachel feels as if she is being watched. Whey did Annie leave in the night without telling anyone? Intrigued, Rachel wants to know what happened to the woman who once lived in her apartment, but as she delves deeper into what happened to Annie, she begins to to question the new people in her life.

Who can she trust? Where is Annie? Why would she not be safe in the building?

This was an enjoyable book which had me questioning the motives of several characters. They are an interesting bunch which is my way of saying that most are quirky and not too likeable. With these types of books, I enjoy doing on my own super sleuthing to try to figure out what the final reveal may be. There are several mysteries in this book: where is Annie, are Rachel and Lily safe, and who can be trusted. With this one, I whittled down my list, but still did not figure things out.

Enjoyable read that kept my interest and moved at a nice pace, then it just ended. Yes, that is what books do, but it felt a little sudden. Other than the abrupt ending, I enjoyed this book. This was my first book by Laura Wolfe and I look forward to reading more of her work.

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.

Rachel Gleason is carrying a heavy burden. She’s recently divorced, has a court order in place to keep her husband distant except for a court arranged visit with a social worker, isn’t getting along with her mother, doesn’t have any close friends, has a six-year-old daughter and has just moved to a new apartment in a new part of town. Thinking she’s finally safe from her old toxic environment and unable to be found by her ex-husband, she relinquishes control and lets down her guard too soon. Lonely and wanting to make a good impression, she befriends other tenants of her building, the building concierge team and the school staff. One of them will let her down.

When she discovers that the girl who lived in 4B before her had disappeared without a trace, she becomes paranoid and obsessive about uncovering the facts. Is Rachel in danger? What about her daughter Lily? Who can she trust?

This is a quick, easy, suspenseful read that centers around trust and loneliness. Wolfe explores the link between desperation, loneliness and the building up and tearing down of psychological walls. She also brings to attention the traps we fall into when we are anxious to fit in to a new environment. I liked that the author highlighted both males and females, their struggles and the pitfalls on the journey to acceptance. It’s fast-paced, has twists you won’t see coming and has a plot that will have enough to keep book clubs chatting for ages. It’ll have you convinced that where personal security is involved, continual vigilance is key.

I was gifted this advance copy by Laura Wolfe, Bookouture and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

So, I think this is 2.5 stars rounded up.
I finished the book in two sittings, which is good! I really enjoyed the writing, I wanted to know more about the main character, the apartment block they lived in, more about who could have possibly done it.. It's all good. I enjoyed guessing the little clues peppered throughout the book - I think it was fair to say I had a lot of suspects.

However, something fell flat at the end bit. I'm not sure whether it was the overly dumbed-down (for the reader) explanation monologue by the killer at the end, or that it was not any of the main suspects I had in mind - I felt like all the reasoning came after the reveal, none before. The after-ending ending was a nice twist, but not overly satisfying, because it just was like - boom!, done.
It is hard to feel satisfied with an ending that felt so rushed.

***slight spoilers about the plot content below:
Also, her new boo - was he really that nice? I am not sure I would excuse his actions so quickly, especially the incident at school. Maybe because my partner is a teacher and he would not be able to work with kids in any capacity if anything of the sort would ever happen. Ever. I felt like if my future love interest would throw me so many curve balls with secrets, I would probably be running for the hills.
In addition, if so many adults showed so much interest in my child I would pack & leave ASAP.

I cannot say there is anything majorly unenjoyable about this book, but it just fell a little flat for me. I could not tell what was missing, but there was something missing from the secret sauce. :)

A perfectly set and told tale of a single Mum and her young daughter who move to a City apartment block from the suburbs in search of a better life, she manages to get a ‘great deal’ on a flat but almost immediately realises things are not as good as they seem and the building and it’s tenants are hiding secrets….
You cant beat a good story set in a apartment block, a set of characters, personalities, foibles and a way of living that you fall into when living ‘wIth other people’
The descriptions of Lincoln Park and Chicago are great and no surprise to read the author lived there for 10 years herself
A good, involving story, a kinda modern whodunit, interesting and enjoyable

When Rachel moves into a new apartment with her young daughter, Lily, it's with a huge sense of relief. After escaping an abusive marriage, this perfect downtown fourth floor rental. within minutes of the lake, feels like the new beginning the two of them deserve. It's a place to call home. Rachel soon begins to develop feelings for her new neighbour, Alex, who lives just down the hall. But soon handwritten letters begin to arrive for someone called Annie. Alex tells her Annie was the previous tenant. Tentatively Rachel opens the first letter, intending to return it to sender. But the note says "Annie, I'm so worried. You aren't safe in that apartment! You have to get out. Before it's too late."

The pace is steady and the second half of the book is the better part. I didn't like any of the characters. It's also a bit predictable in places. There's a few twists and a really good one near the end. I was invested in finding out what had happened to the previous tenant, Annie. The reveal was well done but the ending felt a bit abrupt. I did enjoy the book.

Tense, psychological thriller with engaging characters and twists you won’t see coming. I was obsessed with finishing this book, but also did not want it to end. Smooth writing and great storyline. Read this from a comfortable (safe) place where you feel your coziest, because it will have you jumping at noises and looking over your shoulder! Laura has a way of drawing me in right from the start and The Girl Before Me was no different! A quick read with a slow burn suspense however while I enjoyed it and it kept me intrigued it didn’t quite grip me as much as Laura's other two books I read previously.

I have fast become a fan of Laura’s writing style and the way she keeps my attention with a multitude of twists and secrets and while this one had some good unexpected twists and secrets, I feel like they felt a little forced and didn’t give me the wow factor I was looking for.

In saying that, this could just be me and the fact I am presently loving the darkest and most shocking reads. I do recommend checking this one out for yourself! I also do still wait in anticipation for what Laura has in store for us next!

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸

Rachel is excited to start a new life in the city with her daughter Lily after escaping an abusive marriage. Renting a secure apartment downtown complete with a doorman, Rachel feels safe for the first time in a long time.

When a letter arrives in her mailbox for the previous tenant Annie, who the neighbours say just up and left with no word or warning,  Rachel is curious and opens the letter. The letter tells Annie she is not safe and to get out of that apartment!

Rachel suddenly feels that something bad happened to Annie and can’t shake the feeling her and Lily might not be as safe as she first thought in their new apartment!

WOW....This is simply wow for me.

Rachel Gleason moves into an apartment with her daughter, Lily who is about to start at en elite school. She is freshly divorced after having an abusive relationship with her husband Keith. When she moved into the apartment and checking the new mail box, she finds a letter from Julia in Australia addressing to her sister, Annie who used to live in the same apartment as Rachel right now. In the letter Julia has asked Annie to leave the apartment. When Rachel tries to dig in, Annie had left the apartment suddenly, taking away her furniture and everything. No one in the building knows what happened to Annie. But Rachel is determined to know more about her previous occupant.

To me, this was actually a fast paced thriller that will keep you on the edge of the seat. This was quite unputdownable and there were some twists and turns in nearly every chapter. What I liked about this book was there are so many suspects who may have been involved with Annie's disappearance--the principal at the school Rachel's daughter Lily is attending to, Rachel's new lover Alex, Rachel new friend Bridget...the list goes on and on. The ending was unexpected. The author's writing was really good and did a good job of hooking the reader into the story and making the reader feel like they are a part of the story. Overall, I actually enjoyed reading this thriller!

If you like an unputdownable, fast paced thriller with twists and turns that will keep you on the edge, then this book is one for you--worth five stars!

Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC. The review is based on my honest opinion only.

Rachel and her 6 year old daughter Lily are moving to the city from the suburbs into an apartment building. Rachel is finally divorce from her ex who was abusive. She finds a note in the mailbox to the previous tenant Annie who left in the middle of the night that is warning her to get out the apartment as it was not safe. Rachel is new to city living and the note causes her to question the move but she thinks she maybe being silly. But Rachel being new to city living is now jumping at every noise and sound after reading the note. Rachel meets and makes friends with various people in the building and at Lily's school. She questions everyone about Annie but no one knows what happen to her or why she moved. Great characters and I really appreciated the authors detail in Rachel's background and Lily's school.

This was a fast paced read and my first time reading the author. The book kept me guessing till the end and I really enjoyed it. Highly recommend.

Wow! This book was everything a psychological thriller should be! I lovedddd the characters, each and every one of them. I loved the setting, I loved the unique storyline. I loved the way the author writes and how the book didn't alternate narrators or timelines. It was suspenseful, it was exciting and even when you think the plot twists are over you get hit with another one. Easy 5 stars and I'm running to read more by Laura Wolfe because The Girl Before Me was amazing and I'm genuinely sad it's over! This psychological thriller is a must read! I wasn’t sure what I was going into when reading this as it is a new book that I have seen absolutely nothing about but man did it shock me! I was on the edge of my seat the entire time reading this story about a woman who moved to a new city to start over only to find out she moved in to an unsolved crime scene. Annie disappeared 3 weeks prior to Rachel and Lily moved in but where did she go? No one really seems to know or care for that matter, until Rachel moved in and knew in her gut something was wrong with her apartment that Annie previously lived in. The story line was smooth and easy to follow with interesting and engaged characters. The story had many twisted and turns and I was ready to get to the end and sad it was over all at the same time. The ending truly was not what I expected (in a good way). I 10/10 recommend reading this as soon as its published next month!

Thank you to @lwolfe.write and @netgalley for the ARC.

The book caught my attention from page 1 and it didn’t disappoint at all.

I loved Rachel as a main character. She’s an amazing mother that suffered a lot from her previous marriage and is ready for a fresh start. But Rachel and Lily’s new life isn’t as dreamy as they were hoping for.

I loved getting to know each and every character that Rachel interacted with. Knowing it is a psychological thriller, I suspect of everyone. Also, you’ll hate Rachel’s mom and Keith as much I do by the end of it.

As we read and start to wonder when the mystery will evolve, we get sprinkled with some new information. That got me hooked through the entire book.

Thought this was a great thriller & it kept me guessing until the last pages. I read thrillers nonstop so for me to not get my guesses right… wooo eee… must be a good one. There were so many characters to blame 😂 but could not pinpoint who was responsible. Definitely kept you on your toes the entire time.

Connected with the main character and the idea of a fresh start, loved that she had found a new home for herself and Lily. I would not be going into that creeptastic basement alone though! I had never heard of this author and will definitely watch for her books!

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'The Girl Before Me' by Laura Wolfe.

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Laura Wolfe, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous

Publication date 29th April 2022.

This is the third book I have read by this author. I have previously read 'Her Best Friend's Lie' and 'We Live Next Door' which I highly recommend.

I was originally drawn to this book by its beautiful eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that this book is 'A totally unputdownable gripping thriller, perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell, Shari Lapena and Gillian Flynn.' I am a huge fan of all three of these authors so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I am also a huge fan of Laura and if this is half as good as 'Her Best Friend's Lie' and 'We Live Next Door' it is sure to be a page turning read. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of a prologue and 38 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is based in Chigaco, USA 🇺🇸.

This book is written in third person perspective and the main protagonist is Rachel Gleason. The benefits of third person perspective are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.

'The Girl Before Me' discusses some topics that may trigger some readers or may not be suitable for others. I like to point this out ahead of time in my reviews so you can judge if this book is for you or not. In this book Laura discusses/includes

OMG!!! SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!!! WHAT HAVE I JUST READ!?!?!? Laura Wolfe you are a writing legend!!!

This book is fantastically written with vivid descriptions that absolutely grip the readers attention and puts them right in the middle of it all feeling the hair raise on your arms and feeling the sweat run down your back.

Another huge success by Laura!!! This book has got to be the most heart racing books I've read in a long time!!! It had be hook, line and sinker from the first page and I could not put it down!!! Every time I said one more chapter it ended on a cliffhanger and I just had to know what was going on!!! If you are going to read this then clear your day because it is truly unputdownable. I started this yesterday afternoon and finished it at approx 2am, read it in one sitting and although I'm knackered today it was 1000000% worth it!!! I loved that you got to meet so many of the neighbours/residents in Rachel's apartment and that there was such a a mix of personalities and so many suspects!!! It keeps you constantly guessing who did what!! It really does make you think how life can change so quickly and different decisions can change a life. It also makes you think how looks can be deceiving. It is filled with friendship, romance, lies, secrets, twists, turns and everything you could want from a psychological thriller along with some MASSIVE BOMBSHELLS which will leave you absolutely shocked!!! I for one was NOT expecting that at all!!! I also loved how the book ended. This book would make a fantastic movie!!

As previously mentioned there is such a large mix of characters which makes it a realistic residential setting. All the characters were strong and realistic as well as hiding their own secrets. I really liked Rachel from the start and along with her daughter Lily who was adorable , all the characters were realistic, well developed and had strong characteristics and personalities. I did absolutely NOT expect that humongous bombshell at all. What an absolute twist!!! I can hand on my heart say that I cannot remember when I was so gobsmacked by a book twist but Laura you have done just that!!! This book is rammed with suspense and tension and will keep you biting your nails, on the edge of your seat with your heart pounding while your flipping the pages because you just cant stop.

If you read one book on your life, make sure it is this!!!! I would love to see this turned into a movie and Laura I really hope you are working on your next psychological thriller at this moment because this book will go far!!! A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS on what promises to be a MASSIVE success!!!

Overall an absolutely heart racing, nail biting, unputdownable psychological thriller with a bomb shell you will not see coming!!!

Genres covered in this novel include Mystery, Thriller, Suspense, Psychological Thriller, and Psychological Fiction amongst others.

I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of 'The Couple Next Door' ,'The Woman in the Window', 'Behind Closed Doors', Lisa Jewell, Shari Lapena, Gillian Flynn and ANYONE AND EVERYONE LOOKING FOR AN EXPLOSIVE READ!!!

323 pages.

This book is just £2.99 to purchase on kindle via Amazon or free on kindle unlimited (at time of review) which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!

Rated 5 /5 (I LOVED it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.

This book was amazing. The characters were very interesting and the plot I couldn't get enough of. There was everything a good thriller book needs, a plot that keeps the reader guessing and wondering through every twist and turn as was as the inability to put the book down at any cost. I loved the characters and I loved how the plot was nothing like I'd ever read before, it was amazing and I believe that it would make a great movie. The book starts out with our main character Rachel moving into her new apartment with daughter. Her apartment is everything she is looking for, large, cheap, and she is able to move in right away bonus right? or is it? It isn't until she finds a letter from a Julia to her sister Annie about her being worried about her and begging her to leave the apartment for her own safety, that Rachel starts to wonder what is really going on in her home.
She decides she must get to the bottom of things before its to late and whatever happened to Annie happens to her and her daughter. I was hooked on this book from the very first line and every one after that just kept getting better. I'm so glad that I got the chance to check out this story, because this is one of the best thrillers that I've read in a long time. There was not a single thing that I would change about this book. I loved the characters in this story but what I loved the most was the uniqueness of the plot. It was almost like watching a really good movie. The author did such a great job of describing everything but at the same time not giving away to much information to spoil the ending. I loved this book and I cannot wait to see what else Laura Wolfe has in store for her readers because if it is even half as good as this one I know that it will be a big hit and I will be first in line to check it out.

Rachel and Lily embark in big city living in Chi town. Fresh off a divorce and eager to shake off all the bad, Rachel can’t believe her luck when she scores an affordable apartment near Lily’s new school. And all the other tenets seem so nice, especially,y next door neighbor Alex. Except what happened to the former resident Annie? Why does Rachel keep hearing things in the night? Maybe moving to the Windy City wasn’t such a good idea.
I loved the plot and I was completely surprised by the culprit. Wolfe leads readers astray intentionally. I love the location Of Chicago, a city I know well.
You will, want to read this thriller.

OH. MY. GOD.

This book was so good. The pacing was excellent, enough to increase my heart rate and keep me excited to turn the page.

Rachel has just moved into apartment 4B with her young daughter Lily, following the divorce from her ex-husband, Keith. Lily has received the bright paths scholarship for K-12 from the local private school Rachel has enrolled Lily in.

However, only a few weeks earlier a woman named Annie from Melbourne, Australia was living in 4B and vanished without a trace and Rachel has now revived a letter from Annie’s sister pleading her to contact her as she’s worried.

Rachel slowly meets all the tenants in the building befriending Bridget and Robbie and Henry, entering a relationship with Alex, and navigating her place among the residents.

This book kept me on my toes from the very beginning. The twists are well done and the reveal at the end is a true bomb-drop!

Five stars!

Plot twists which hit you like a speeding train! This book had me looking over my shoulder to make sure no one was there! Creepy and addictive! Did she run away or did something sinister happen? Can you really trust your neighbours? Rachel finally manages to flee an abusive marriage with her daughter Lily and starts afresh: new city, new home and new friends, but what exactly happened to the previous tenant Annie? On the surface everything is great, but what happens when you can't shake that feeling of dread and you don't know who you can trust? Is this nerves of moving into a new home or intuition telling her something isn't right? This book had me hooked from the first page and kept me turning the page with lightening speed. I suspected every character at some point and was unable to figure out the plot twists until they landed like a bomb!

A spooky and nail biting read that will have you setting on the edge of your set and looking over your shoulder when even you think a shadow moved, or getting up and checking your doors to make sure their locked . Plus it'll make you ask yourself do you really know your neighbors as well as you think you do, and can they be trusted . And just like her other books the plot and story is well written, and will keep you guessing on what's going to happen next.

After leaving a failing marriage, Rachel & her daughter Lily move into apartment 4B in a smart building in the heart of downtown Chicago. The fact the building has a doorman helps Rachel feel more secure from her violent ex, & they settle in quickly thanks to their helpful neighbours, including Alex from 4A, a cute guy who is also a teacher at Lily's new school. The only thing marring their first days is a letter which arrives for the previous tenant, Annie Turner. Although she really shouldn't, Rachel opens the letter & it is from Annie's sister, Julia, wanting to know why she hasn't heard from her in so long & telling her she isn't safe in the apartment - Rachel finds out that Annie apparently did a moonlight flit & disappeared owing money to the landlord but wonders why Annie would feel unsafe there. A few nights later, Rachel wakes up & is sure she can hear someone in their apartment, she goes out to investigate & there is no-one there, but she still feels uneasy. Did something happen to Annie, & is the person responsible still around?

I thought this was a really good read, & I enjoyed it. The tension is kept up all the way through as some of the tenants in the building start acting strangely & the reader is unsure who may be involved at first, although it does become a little more predictable towards the end. The final part of the puzzle in the epilogue is a nice touch though. The main character is a little too timid at times, but understandable considering what she has been through, but it was nice to see her finally stand up to her overbearing mother. Overall, I would recommend this if you like uncomplicated thrillers.

My thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Bookouture, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

Rachel and Lily are starting over. After Rachel’s tumultuous Divorce, she decides to move with her Daughter Lily to the city. Everything seems to fall into place - Rachel finds the perfect Apartment in a beautiful building after the previous tenant skips town, Lily is awarded a scholarship at a prestigious school just a couple blocks away, and they make fast friends with a few new neighbors quickly after moving in. But Rachel quickly realizes everything isn’t what it seems and there might be more to the previous Tenant, Annie’s, quick exit.

The Girl Before Me was so well written that I often felt sucked in to the story. It was a twisty mystery that I couldn’t put down! Just when you think you figure it out, there’s another turn - which I loved. It keeps you guessing until the very last page! This was my first read by Laura Wolfe and it certainly won’t be my last!!

Many thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for allowing me the opportunity to review an ARC. I’m looking forward to reading more from Laura!

This was a quick read that had me hooked from the start.
Rachel is staring over her life with her daughter Lily after a disastrous marriage break up. She moves into a lovely apartment complex in the city while Lily starts at a prestigious private school. It’s not long before Rachel starts feeling weird and unusual vibes from the apartment and some of the tenants, especially once she realises the previous tenant from her apartment vanished without a trace.
There is a plethora of suspects and new encounters for Rachel as she tries to figure out what happened to Annie.
This was a slow burn which I didn’t mind. It had lots of twists and turns and the writing was very atmospheric. It just fell a little flat for me. I didn’t see the twist at the end coming, but I feel it took so long to get there, that by that stage I had lost a little interest.
A fast, twisty and creepy read that I’d recommend to lovers of domestic thrillers. I look forward to reading more from this author.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the digital review copy.

A thrilling read from start to finish. The tension never let up and the characters were well developed. I loved the Chicago setting too. This book was everything I look for in a psychological thriller.

The Girl Before Me had me trying to piece together every little bit of information to figure out the mystery.
Obviously I had a hunch for a couple of people, and I was really hoping I was wrong. (It was a bit of a mix)
I was hooked throughout the entirety of this book. It was the perfect amount of creepy, mystery and that reminds me - the clues, the ‘clues’ and the stalker-ish behaviour, it was all done so perfectly. The more I talk about this book, the more I realise how well crafted it was.
Its all catching up to me now - I’m terrified and so glad I don’t live alone. THIS is a psychological thriller and I can already hear myself raving about it to my friends, family, EVERYONE.
Although obviously please do not read if you currently live in an apartment and are already scared for your safety because… read the synopsis, you’ll understand.

Rachel Gleason has a chance to start over, leaving behind an abusive ex-husband and moving from the suburbs to the city. There are times she can’t believe her luck. She gets a great deal on an apartment after the previous tenant broke her lease and disappeared without a trace. Her daughter, Lily, receives a scholarship at a prestigious private school.

Most of her new neighbors are friendly, especially Alex who lives next door, and Bridget, an attorney who lives upstairs. However, life isn’t without problems.

Keith, the ex-husband, is determined to see his daughter outside of court-appointed visiting times. He tracks her down to the city, thanks to Rachel’s neurotic mother. The principal at Lily’s school is also a womanizer, and he makes it clear he’s interested in Rachel, threatening to pull Lily’s scholarship if Rachel doesn’t do what he wants. Then, there is the weird neighbor Drake who is more than creepy.

The biggest mystery is what happened to Annie, the woman who lived in 4B before Rachel moved in. When Rachel opens a card addressed to Annie from her sister in Australia, she begins to question. Add to that the strange noises she hears during the night and the tone is set for a suspenseful read.

There are plenty of twists and turns that kept me guessing right up to the end. Laura Wolfe is a go-to author for me, and once again she delivered.
