“My terrible angel,” Severn whispered, his blue eyes bright in the shadow of Mikhail’s wings.
“My impossible demon.”
“I set out to hurt my enemy and fell in love with him instead.”
Demons... he’d forgotten what it was like to be among them, to have to fight for rank. They were fiercely loyal, hot-headed, and passionate. As Konstantin, he’d been among the most powerful. Now, he was, at best, a novelty, at worst, a threat.
He knew both sides, had fought for both sides, loved both sides.
Someone needed to save these angels from themselves, and Severn wasn’t sure that someone was him, given how he was lying to Solo with every breath. Maybe Mikhail would one day save them all, if he pulled his head out of his own ass in time.
“It has always been a guardian’s sacred duty to protect humans from demons, and from themselves, if necessary. Love kills, therefore, we kill love.”
He still loved him, even now. If he could rip out his own, treacherous heart, he would. He fell forward onto his hands and sobbed, unable to hold the immense pain inside.
He’d been so afraid to love, like it was some mystical force he could not control, but love didn’t ask to be controlled. It just was. And love was powerful.
“Before you pass judgment,” Severn said to Mikhail, “Amii used us both.”
“Why is the crone here?” He didn’t sound angry, more carefully curious.
“Aye!” Amii exclaimed. “Why am I here, interrupting your”—she waved a hand—“testosterone-fueled fuck-fest? Nice shirt, angel. Pineapples. Very you.”
Oh gods. Severn thumped his head back against the cottage wall. This wasn’t going to go well.
“I am a mess, and hopeless and riddled with flaws, but I’m trying to find my way. Please don’t ever give up on us, on me.”
“I’m afraid of love,” Mikhail whispered. “Of us.”
Severn tilted his head back and peered into Mikhail’s dark eyes. A guardian’s love was a powerful thing. Severn had abused it before, and he might never forgive himself for that. “That’s how you know it’s real.”
“My terrible angel,” Severn whispered, his blue eyes bright in the shadow of Mikhail’s wings.
“My impossible demon.”
A foolish thought. Demons did not fly with angels. But he dreamed it all the same, like he’d dreamed of those soft feathers once again wrapped around him and the kiss they’d shared on a rooftop in the rain.
He wanted him back, not like he needed Severn—because of the allyanse—he just needed someone, anyone, to hold him. He was so very alone, and before Severn, it hadn’t mattered. But now, it seemed, the loneliness was the hollowness inside of him, and for a second or two, Solo’s kiss had made him feel fuller, not as empty, not as cold. Did it mean anything, or was it just his broken mind desperately reaching for company, even if that company was so thoroughly wrong?
It didn’t matter who Severn was inside, Mikhail loved all of him. Always had. He’d done terrible things. Both of them had. But Mikhail was beginning to understand how love forgave the unforgivable.
He didn’t know how to voice everything in his head, and so he pulled him down and kissed him with everything he had, hoping that Mikhail would feel all the things he couldn’t seem to speak.
“What about a hobby?”
“A hobby?”
“You know… like…” he gestured at the air, clearly struggling, “fishing.” Solo mimed an overarm throw, and Mikhail frowned.
“Fishing?” Mikhail echoed. “For fish?”
“Well, not demons,” Solo laughed a low, melodic laughter.
“I’m afraid of love,” Mikhail whispered. “Of us.”
“That’s how you know it’s real.”
He kissed his demon in a starlit field and knew nothing would ever be the same again.

It was too much, and everything, and not enough.
❝I loved him. Even before the allyanse. I loved a liar with all my heart. That is the true horror of all this.❞
❝Without Aerie, I don’t understand my purpose. Nothing makes any sense.❞
EDIT ~ this review is gonna be pretty vague, because i'm trying to avoid spoilers. . . my more 'spoilery review' is going to be book three, so, yeah, i apologize in advanced for my vagueness.

He’d fought to keep Severn alive. He’d shared half himself with him. And while they’d had their vast differences, it didn’t matter who Severn was inside, Mikhail loved all of him. Always had. He’d done terrible things. Both of them had. But Mikhail was beginning to understand how love forgave the unforgivable
He knew, with absolute certainty, that their love was right
Would Mikhail betray him so? Wasn’t it all Severn deserved for breaking his heart? It might even be justice.
Amii rose to their feet, old bones creaking. They approached Severn and cupped his face in their soft, wrinkled hands. “Love is not fed with the eyes,” they said softly. “It comes from within, and you are the same within now as you’ve always been..."
"An angel and a demon, their love shattered"
"Severn had hurt him, but Mikhail had hurt Severn too."
"Mikhail broke away and whispered against his cheek, “I am a mess, and hopeless and riddled with flaws, but I’m trying to find my way. Please don’t ever give up on us, on me."
"Amii rose to their feet, old bones creaking. They approached Severn and cupped his face in their soft, wrinkled hands. “Love is not fed with the eyes,” they said softly. “It comes from within, and you are the same within now as you’ve always been. A demon with a proud, honorable heart, full of love. Mikhail loves you, not your illusion.”
Severn closed his eyes. Amii’s touch fell away, and he found himself afraid to open his eyes, to see. When he did, Mikhail was there, in place of Amii, searching Severn’s face, his expression soft."
"You burn as brightly as one of those stars you pulled from the sky."
"I'd pull them all down for you."
