When a damaged young woman is given a chance to reclaim her life in a small South Carolina town, she must reckon with the dark secrets she left behind in order to accept the love she deserves.
On the run from a violent past, Leah Allen arrived in tiny Rivertown, South Carolina, battered and broken, but ready to reinvent herself. By a stroke of fate, Leah is drawn to the Southern hospitality of a small caf, looking for a warm meal but finding so much more. Lulu, the owner, offers her a job, a place to stay and a new lease on life. Through Lulu's tenacious warmth and generosity, Leah quickly finds herself embraced by the quaint community as she tries to put herself back together. Given she's accustomed to cruelty, the kindness is overwhelming.
Soon Leah meets Crowley Mason, the most eligible bachelor in town. A lawyer and friend of Lulu's, Crowley is wary of Leah's sudden, mysterious arrival. Despite his reserve, something sparks between them that can't be denied. But after all she's been through, can Leah allow herself to truly love and be loved, especially when her first urge is to run?
Exploring the resiliency of both the heart and the spirit, Lulu's Caf gorgeously illustrates how old scars can finally heal no matter how deep they seem.

This book made me laugh, cry, and be so thankful for the wonderful man I am married to. This is such a good book, with a plot full of drama, comedy, heartache, second chances, and sweet romance. I fell in love with the characters, the locations, and the resiliency of the human body and soul. Do yourself a favor and read this book, you will not be disappointed.
This book blew me away. I read it so fast because Leah's story was so compelling and heart breaking. It was hard to read at first. Domestic abuse is harshly described. But once she gets away and lands in the small town of Rivertown, I fell in love with the characters and their story. A beautiful, redemptive love story with a touch a faith to make it even better. I absolutely loved it!
Beautifully written. Couldn't put this book down. It has become one of my favorites as well as the author. It made my love for the south grow. Looking forward to more!
I downloaded this, not realising it was ‘Christian’ romance ( I check books before I download them and didn’t see any religious references in the genres) Had I known I would probably not have read it, but once I had started I decided to continue. I wish I hadn’t.
There was so much wrong with this novel. So many ?? WTF?? moments that I started making copious notes just to make sure that it wasn’t me at fault.
I liked this. It had some depth to it with DV issues. Kind of a bit Christian-based, writing was pretty simplistic. Not a bad book, but something about it made me think something was missing? I don’t know. A sweet story that has a HEA vibe.
Originally published in 2019, this is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. I'm sorry it took me so long to discover it. A powerful and heartbreakingly moving story, yet heartwarming with extraordinary examples of generosity, kindness, and love. Might be my first book by this author – but it won’t be the last. Already attacked her backlist and found she had a new release in May of this year. I’ve already ordered it. August 3rd is going to be a super-duper day for me – 6 books coming my way from Amazon.
I won't be the one to spoil this exceptional story for any reader – the blurb will offer a tease, and the author does an extraordinary job delivering a prize-winner. Leah Allen's journey is not always easy to read – she's suffered the unimaginable, but if you’re willing to wait a bit, there’s a beautiful rainbow on its way.
Characterizations were so well-written, and the southern charm perfectly delivered by all the characters that you just want to hug tightly and cheer for a happily ever after at the end of a long and challenging road.
There's so much pain and sadness, but also hope and joy. Lowe’s writing style is simple and straightforward but holds so much depth and meaning.
A visit to Lulu’s Café in Rivertown, South Carolina isn't one I'll soon forget. And meeting the town's most eligible bachelor and a lawyer, Crowley Mason, and Lulu, who runs the small-town diner, confirmed that there are indeed people who'll step forward and unselfishly offer comfort to lost souls, but most important of all -- UNCONDITIONAL LOVE. Indeed, Leah Allen fit that description of a lost soul and deserved a second chance.
Five stars for a stand-out reading experience by an amazing new-to-me author. And I loved the bright floral cover, too – sunflowers shout happiness to me.
Good heavens people!! This was like reading a testimony I haven't read one of this kind and I'm really glad I picked this up
This is story of a woman who suffers from domestic violence and tries to escape the pain she'd be trapped in..though she finally escapes.. she doesn't know why she's living now for she lost only thing she wanted to live after so much of suffering...life seemed unfair ..not unfair..cruel!! She's been shown kindness from unexpected strangers..as she makes her way to a remote town in north.. she'd been taken in by ppl she never though would she's feels seen, taken for the first time in Life .. She's laughing and smiling more in days than all her lifetime. While God's plan for her life is turning out good..she couldn't go further..past seems to break through her..she had enough bruises to remind her of lifetime of pain Will she be able to overcome it all and Will she witness God's faithfulness to Her after all that she'd been through ..
I loved this story is an understatement,I loved Crowley and Leah from this book is also a understatement..WoW...what a beautiful story..this story has it all.. I'm quite taken with it
I loved all the characters except Brent and some other women , there was so much on stake , everyone from Rivertown were wonderful
I was laughing and smiling at so many parts..I didn't get that such a heavy topic can be tackled and yet the story could continue light hearted
The story has equal parts of humor and is light hearted as it continues..with the depth of emotions beautiful portrayed
I highly highly recommend this to everyone This book isn't preachy at all!! The beauty of God's love is depicted the story itself ...it made me so happy This is awesome grab
'Some scars don't ever heal. No matter how awfully bad you want them to. They're just too deep.'
When a horrifically battered young woman by chance makes her way to a small southern town (or should we say it is a 'God incidence?'), she is taken in by Lulu, owner of Lulu's Cafe, and loved on and nurtured. Still, Leah Allen is broken and pain is her portion. Not just physical pain, of which there is definitely plenty, but emotional pain, heartrending pain so strong and deep the reader feels bruised reading it. But God has led Leah to this place of healing and as the weeks and months pass, healing starts. Crowley Mason, attorney, cafe patron and most eligible bachelor, senses something in Leah that grabs his heart. Can Leah achieve the full healing her heart needs? Will these scars ever be not visible?
'As Crowley prayed, a calm washed over him and he felt for the first time in days that he could breathe.'
I'll be flat honest with you: this is not an easy book to read. It is deeply painful to read. So painful that at times I wanted to set it aside. But it kept drawing me back. I discovered T.I. Lowe's books earlier this year and was drawn in so very much. This one showcases her writing ability incredibly well. My goodness, how this book touched my heart! It is a wonderful testament to how God heals and the redemption that he extends to His children. I loved it so much and can very highly recommend it. Such a powerful story! Don't miss this book.
This book has my WHOLE heart. I don’t know if I’m capable of properly putting into words how beautifully gripping the story was.
ZERO language and spice, but please be aware that the topic of mental and extreme physical spousal abuse, especially in the first 60 pages, is HEAVY. It’s going to rip your heart out, but I promise it’ll be put back together again. It is SO well written and I can’t recommend this book enough. You’re going to feel every emotion possible as the main character gets her second chance at life. I’ve had these overwhelming emotions over books before, but they were all cluttered with swear words or intimate scenes that pushed the boundaries for my reading taste. The fact that this author could move me with her story while keeping it entirely clean made my heart so happy.
Leah Allen is making the brave decision to escape the grip her abusive husband has on her. She winds up running away to the small town of Rivertown, SC – and it’s there, in Lulu’s Café, that she discovers a community of people that take her in without judgement and show God’s love by example. Lulu offers Leah a job and a place to live. She’s by her side 100% and she never pushes Leah to spill out every detail of her past. Although she makes great progress, full healing of her internal scars won’t be complete until she chooses to share the truths she’s been hiding.
Such a strong representation of redemption, faith and found family with a romance that will inspire and melt your heart. This one is absolutely going down as one of my all-time favorite reads.

Heal me O Lord and I will be healed, Save me and I will be saved for you alone are my praise... Jeremiah 17:14
I did a reread of this wonderful book the other day and so glad I did. This book is about spousal abuse. It is a hard read at time and what sad is it is hard to believe this happens but it does daily. Gabby believes there is no matter life for her so she stays. Finally when she finds out she is pregnant she decides to leave but it is to late. When she does escape she finds herself at Lulu Cafe and when Lulu knows something is wrong she has her stay and start a new life. Crawlie doesn't trust her at first but as time goes on not trusting turns to love. Can he help her and can Gabby start a new life with him? This book is such an important book to read and TI Lowe does such a great job writing Gabby story. I loved this book so much this is a reread and I know I will be reading it again. I highly recommend this book to everyone. Remember to have tissues on hand and a open heart!!!!
Words cannot adequately express the emotions I felt reading this powerful novel. Gabriella is superwoman lured into a marriage by a monster suffered ten years of unspeakable abuse to finally getting away. It tells a story of a young woman reinventing herself with the help of a loving woman by the name of Lulu and the tender mercies of our Lord. You see the metamorphosis of Gabriella into Leah, a healthy vibrant woman. I loved the character of Crowley who captures Leah.s heart and shows her what love should be. I cried as he retraced Gabriella's journey. I encourage everyone to read this book. It will change everyone, it did me.
Once again, I find it amazing that the reviewers who gave 3 stars or less here have their profiles set to private :o ... DON'T pay any attention to them coz they are way off base and besides, the majority gave this 5 stars, too :)... This is one of the best books I've read all year & it's the first I've ever read by this talented author, but it won't be the last :) ... Amazing detailed descriptions make you feel like you are right there!...Wonderfully developed characters that keep the reader engaged & the pages turning :) ... I won this book in a contest, but am thrilled to have found this must read author's works to add to my TBR list :) ... Grab this now or at least add this wonderfully entertaining story to your TBR list!!
I really wanted to like this book, but after reading up to chapter 7 or 8, I had to DNF.
I enjoy reading books that target harder-hitting and emotional topics. But in my personal opinion, I felt the author went too long/far with the details of the abuse, and it got too graphic for me where I had to stop. Please check the trigger warnings before you start this book, and feel free to message me if you want more detailed information.
Oh my heart! I knew from the first 10 pages that it was going to be a 5 star read. The way it ripped my heart clean out of my chest and then gently and tenderly placed it back was 🤌🏻! The writing, the character development, everything....it was perfect. Heartbreaking and redeeming. This is truly one of the best books I've ever read. Please do not sleep on this book yall ❤️
Remarkably enough, I will not belong to the majority of reviewers giving this book the maximum of ratings. Don’t get me wrong, there was a lot to like about the story, but in no way did I find it mind-blowing. What I liked is that the main character, Leah, in a prior life Gabby, wasn't a whiner – that was a plus point. She was a battered spouse in a previous life and needed to get away, and that’s what she did, after 10 years of living with a cruel, rich husband. It may be hard to understand, but given her young age and circumstances, she didn't know better, until her situation escalated and she had to get away. I liked how Leah - once settled in a new life, in a new small town, miles away - is a hard worker and how grateful she is for the friendship and support of Lulu, Ana and Crowley - even if they don't know about her past (but they suspect). My main criticism is that this book would have been much richer if there were more sub-characters, who had names and stories. I don’t understand that a small-town and a close-knitted community like Rivertown, SC, didn't inspire the writer to come up with a better “ensemble” cast. I also liked that the book wasn't too focused on the physical aspect of the romance. It was a friendship more than anything else. I LIKED that a lot. You could see how these two, Leah and Crowley, were gradually growing towards each other. Other than that, there wasn't that much happening, that’s why I think that a little more sub-characters would have benefited the story. That being said, I especially liked the ending. It’s heartwarming, because I love big families!! 3,5 *** rating.
I must admit, the beginning few chapters are very intense to read. Domestic violence is very very real and reading about it makes one's stomach churn. The author T. I. Lowe gave fantastic descriptions making me feel the anguish and pain of Gabriella (then turned Leah) and opening my eyes to the tragedy that is domestic violence. The middle of the book dragged a bit. The details were fantastic throughout, but the middle wasn't filled with much action. The characters, Leah, Lulu, and Crowley were all so lovable that by the end you feel as if they're your friends too. The end of the story was filled with redemption, love and a renewed sense of hope, which rounded out this lovely story perfectly. I would definitely read more by this author when I get the chance.
Just as impactful the second time round! Such an amazing story!

"Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed.; save me, Lord, and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise." Jeremiah 17:14
What a mesmerizing read! Deeply profound. Moving. Devastating. And hopeful. And the way the reader gets to connect the dots and see the way God is pursuing Leah when she can't see it herself is so inspiring. This stories show how we can be God's hands and feet in this broken world.
Lulu's Cafe is a hard read at first. Domestic abuse is vicious and Lowe shoves us into that darkness right away. She doesn't mince words or shy away from a brutal portrayal of the evil and its aftermath. But, reader take heart because Leah's story is laced with hope and when she hits Lulu's Cafe...well, the story takes a whole other turn.
A word about Crowley Mason. He can stand proudly on my Book Hero pedestal. His heart. His faith. His honor. That Southern charm. All while being a devastatingly handsome flirt. Definitely worthy of an ugly cry ending. Sniffle. My heart is so full.
I listened to the audible edition of Lulu's Cafe, narrated by Natasha Soudek and I really enjoyed the Southern atmosphere she conjured up.
“God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.”-Psalm 46:5 KJV
Starting off, this book was an accurate representation of all aspects of abuse, along with the many methods of healing from trauma used: eating healthy, exercise, sitting in the grief, confiding in people. Certain lines and scenes had me bawling throughout, whether good or bad; and I felt like I was lulled halfway through it into a false sense of security. Reading the scene of visiting Angel's little grave was particularly painfully beautiful; tears were just silently coursing down my face. And the ending with their disgustingly adorable family was too much: 6 kids! I was stressing out just the reading the epilogue, ha! And I will definitely be listening to the playlist included in this book to see if songs fit certain scenes and what not. I know I cannot describe what it was like reading this book: all the laughing and squealing, the screaming and sobbing, and the terrible pain and God-given blessings. Just read this book. READ IT! It will change your life in someway....
P. S. I NEED to find myself a Southern man like Crowley!
P. P. S. Thank you, T. I. Lowe, for keeping that promise. I hope you know what this story means to the world... and to someone like me.
“Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise. ”-Jeremiah 17:14 KJV 🙌🏻💓
Here, have some quotes that I loved from this book: “Why do you need to know about some old ugly scars." “I need to know so I can help them heal.” “Some scars don’t ever heal. No matter how awfully bad you want them to. They’re just too deep.”
“You know our lives and the weather do have a lot in common. Change is constant. Just like spring, we are continuously renewed in some form or the other. Summer can be an exciting season, full of fun and adventure. Fall can be a slow time for us to just reflect and take life in. Winter sometimes can bring things into very crisp focus.”
“I know the bad can’t be ignored. It’s everywhere, and I have no doubt that you have survived something horribly bad, but don’t overlook the good. Please remember good is like treasure. You have to seek it out. And remember how rewarding it is when you find it.”
ALL THE HEARTS 🥹❤️💔❤️ T.I. Lowe is becoming a favorite author for when I want a raw story that will rip me apart and fill me with hope by the end. She doesn’t shy away from heavy topics, but in a way it makes the beauty of healing that much brighter.
This love story is potent and achingly tender.
I wish all Christian fiction could be written this well.
Also, can I please have a Lulu in my life? 🙋♀️
Side note—I went in cold and read this while pregnant. Maybe not the best idea… 😅 But no regrets.
Trigger warning. (I don’t want to spoil, but there are brief depictions of extreme spouse abuse in the first 60 ish pages). Otherwise very clean! Kisses only. No language.
I had no clue what this book was about or where I’d heard of it but it was very good. The beginning was absolutely heartbreaking for Leah but love won out in the end. I adored Crowley and Lulu as well as Leah, and the southern hospitality was charming to be sure. I secretly wish I had a Lulu’s Cafe in my little town. Some people have mentioned in their reviews that they didn’t realize this was a Christian based book and honestly I did not either. However it in no way preached at the reader IMO. It was a delight to read this one.
*2024 Reread*: I can now proudly say I own this book and was properly torn up and encouraged all over again. For very personal reasons, iykyk, this book will always hold a special, treasured place in my heart!! ❤
I totally need to own this book. I was immediately drawn to this book for two reasons. One was because of the theme of healing scars from abuse, both visible and invisible, and because my favorite flower is on the cover, which I thought was a good sign of hope, joy, and growth that I could gain from the story. 🌻 I wasn't let down one bit. The book was painful and heartrending at times (there were tears running down my face), but also filled with giggle-worthy humor and heartwarming Southern charm. Most importantly, the toxic cycle of domestic violence was very accurately portrayed *TRIGGER WARNING* for survivors, and Leah's healing process through God's and Crowley's unconditional love was beautifully healing and super meaningful and impactful to read. I also loved how the author used Jeremiah 17:14 as an anchor point in Leah's suffering and in her renewal. An excellent example of God's healing grace for even the deepest of scars, Lulu's Cafe will tear your heart open and sew it back together with a stunning reminder of a woman's worth and the priceless gift of a true gentleman. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
This is everything a good book shouldn’t be: unrealistic, misogynistic, racist, bland, unoriginal (it’s basically a worse Safe Haven) poorly written, lazy, predictable all the way though. The deeply intense themes of rape and domestic violence are irresponsibly written about and lacking in authority or empathy, and any attempt to do true justice to the psychological hurt of these realities that too many face falls very flat. The thinly veiled insinuations that a woman’s worth is tied to her ability to procreate is old-fashioned at best, grossly sexist at most accurate. The author’s reckless use of bible verses and mentions of God strewn throughout the book and completely out of context are used simply for the author’s own purposes, and help create no greater understanding (and probably actually do harm to those who have little knowledge) of the character of God. Also, as a medical professional, it was clear very little research went into the writing of the character’s experience at a hospital, as well as with various injuries named throughout. A huge disappointment.
Can't believe myself for keeping this (novel) sitting in my kindle! I don't even bother to read and finished it at 3AM!
I love how Leah (Gabby) overcome & surpassed everything she has gone thru... How she allowed herself to love and be loved... so overwhelmed by how T.I. Lowe made everything comes to life... even though its hard to believe that there are some people that might really gone thru what Leah has...
Surprised by how the new place & people accepted her and felt that she needed to be cared and love for even though she is a total stranger... Has I longed to meet & have my own Crowley Mason!
I love this novel and guaranteed this will leave a mark in my heart... because this has thought me how to trust God no matter what... everything has a purpose... to make you stronger... and to take you as well to the place He prepared for you... Kudos to T.I. Lowe!
Some stories are all sugar, spice, and everything nice, this story is more… more reality, more authenticity, more grit, more truth, more love, and more hope. Sometimes we need to be reminded, there’s always hope, even in the midst of crushing heartbreak and pain.
Leah’s experiences are a fictional representation of the real lives of many who face these same critical issues. May her story open our eyes and hearts and motivate our hands and feet to serve these individuals. Crowley is a perfectly flawed hero and I love that the author didn’t create a knight in highly polished shining armor for this story.
I highly recommend Lulu’s Cafe by T.I. Lowe and I’m eagerly anticipating her next release!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a review. The opinions expressed are my own.
Lulu's Cafe is where Leah Allen (aka Gabriella) finally finds refuge after she escapes an abusive relationship. I found the beginning a little tough to read and would be I think a trigger for anyone with emotional/physical abuse in their background, but it was also written with taste and it didn't go into the depth that it could've. The rest of the story reminded me of how God loves us, or at least He wants us to experience His love through others. Leah learns what family is through Lulu's motherly love, Ana's friendship, and Crowley's love for her.
Wow. I really liked this book. I started reading it in the morning before work, went to work for 8 hours, and then finished it a little after midnight. It was a page turner and hard to put down. The beginning was quite graphic and disturbing, but that is what domestic violence is. It's a beautiful story of restoration and grace. It's a romantic love story set in the South. I laughed and cried. What a great book.
Wow…this book ruined me in the worst and best ways. The first 7 chapters were really hard to get through because of the situation Leah was in, but I’m so glad I pushed through to get to the beautiful parts of the story as well! I would highly recommend this book but would also warn that it may have some triggers for some people.
I have lots of love for this author's work, and Lulu's Cafe might be my favorite book of hers yet.
This book comes with a strong trigger warning as it deals directly with the horror of domestic violence as well as food addiction. There are scenes in this book that may haunt me for life, but this book also hands the reader an ending that is so completely healing and restorative, that I can wholeheartedly recommend it.
After reading this book, my eyes are open and I pray I can "see" those around me that need love, support, and help. One of the best parts of this book was looking at all the people who came into Leah's life at different pivotal moments to love her.
