This poetry collection was my second that I have read by this author. I didn't even realize it before when I read another collection of hers that I have followed her on twitter for the longest time. I really enjoyed her other collection of poetry Five More Minutes and wanted to continue to support her. This collection was difficult for me to get through because of all the person issues that were mentioned in this collection. This collection mentioned abuse from a domestic situation and much more so, it's a very hard hitting subject to some. That is the sole reason I was having difficulty getting through it, nonetheless it was absolutely beautiful writing. This collection has actually inspired me to pick up my laptop when I am feeling low and write instead of bottling everything up inside.
Holding on to Nothing by Shannon O'Connor is a stunning collection of poetry and prose that mines the deepest depths of a truly poetic soul. I have read and enjoyed Ms O'Connor's other collections and am a huge fan of her work, but I must say that this is a personal favourite. The experiences of heartbreak, abuse, and self-love are deeply personal and individualistic, but Shannon is somehow able to find that kernel of humanity that we all share, and this collection will surely resonate with readers.
Many thanks to Shannon O'Connor for providing me with a copy of this title to read and review.
It’s so early for me to be this emotional but another fantastic poetry collection. I think the reason this one stands out the most to me is because of the final two sections, but mostly for the very last one. I loved the “recovery” period, and it makes it a collection about someone else effecting you into a collection about YOU.
"A promise is just a seven letter word, until someone makes it mean something."
Another beautiful compilation of poems and prose by Shannon O'Connor. I'm so happy to have been an ARC reader of hers. Reading her poetry is like reading your very own diary. She somehow is able to show such raw emotion when depicting current day love and heartbreak.
“there was something safe in joking about what we truly wanted.”
This collection of poems is centered around love and lust. It looks at jealousy, loss, sex, decision making, and other human emotions that all surround relationships. I wasn’t sucked into the words, but there were good thoughts here. I really don’t understand the titles and sections, as most were named after vegetables. Not sure what the point of that was or how it connects to the themes. The themes didn’t feel organic and original, but repetitive and tired after halfway.
