Marion Kummerow was born and raised in Germany, before she set out to "discover the world" and lived in various countries. In 1999 she returned to Germany and settled down in Munich where she's now living with her family.
After dipping her toes with non-fiction books, she finally tackled the project dear to her heart. UNRELENTING is the story about her grandparents, who belonged to the German resistance and fought against the Nazi regime.
It's a book about resilience, love and the courage to stand up and do the right thing.
Uncommon Sacrifice is the sixth book in the War Girls Series by Marion Kummerow. I didn’t realise when I picked up the book that it was number 6 in her series. Having said that, this book can be read as a stand-alone, but I am intrigued enough by what I’ve read to want to go back and explore the other books too. This is an historical fiction, WWII story- with, sacrifices, resilience, strength, determination, friendship, family bonds, love, and drama. The hope of escape and freedom that captives in the war camps hold in their hearts to help them endure. Two brothers held captive- one badly injured and relying on the other to survive- the other with a chance to escape to freedom, but that would mean leaving his brother behind to face probable death. What decision does he make? Can Peter leave Stan behind, in order to save himself? Or will he sacrifice his own freedom, for his brother? A very emotional, well written and thought-provoking read. The characters really made the story for me. It was entirely realistic, relatable, and believable! I will definitely be reading more of Ms. Kummerow’s series in the near future!
Sometimes family is so important to survival in life. To Peter, Stan, and Anna family gave them something to fight for in tough times. Love truly does conquer all. Another Great War girls book, love this series.
Uncommon Sacrifice (War Girls Book 6) by Marion Kummerow was a fast pace, action packed historical fiction read, that gave us a inside look of what it was like during WWII and what it really meant to give everything you got for your county, family and freedom.
My first read by this author and in this series, they read as stand alones so no worries about having to read the other five books to play catch up. But after this heart pulling, feels destroying read, I'm going to have to go back and dive into those other books.
I've never been into war books, or movies, but these books really pulled me into the story right from page one. The writing was not interesting only engaging; it managed to pull me into this dangiour world and keep me there. The writing was deeply emotional, hitting every emotion you can think of and it really got me. You can tell a lot of research went into creating this book, making this story all the more realistic, emotional and authentic. When I say this book is emotional, I mean it's emotional. Every decision these characters made was done with thought, precision and of course that hidden danger of what could happen, if there's even the smallest of slip-ups, death being one if them, was all present and featured.
I give this book my super high recommendation and my stamp of approval. This story is a must read for all, and a reminder what it not only takes to live through a war, but how to survive it, and to try and keep what little humanity you have left real, solid and saine.
As mentioned in the book’s synopsis, Uncommon Sacrifice is the sixth book in Marion Kummerow’s War Girl series but it can be read as a stand alone. This book is really different from what I’ve been reading lately and I found myself really enjoying it. At the very beginning we are introduced to a storyline with depth and emotion, the characters felt really real as the author describes each ruffle of hair or the casual, witty banter back and forth between men painted a vivid picture. As the story progresses and we are presented with the hardships of war on both the men away and the women left behind, I am thoroughly impressed with the author's ability to make me feel so connected with the characters. Somehow each one is relatable despite the fortunate fact that I have not endured the stresses and worries each of them endured. One of the most impactful lines of the story for me was when Anna had a realization while looking at her mother… “Anna peered at her mother and really saw her for the first time in a while. Her hair had become gray and wrinkles had been etched into her beautiful face, a permanent frown of sorrow cutting deep into her forehead.” Such a simple passage, but how many times have we been involved in our own life only to have a moment of clarity and intense emotion for those we love? I could probably go on forever picking pieces of this story that hit me, in “short” I loved it. I look forward to reading more of the War Girls series and more from this author as a whole.
Uncommon Sacrifice (War Girls Book 6) By Marion Kummerow. An incredible story about survival in times of war. While this is book six I read it as a standalone without any confusion or questions. With this story the author takes readers on a travel through a time of much pain and sacrifice. The author does an amazing job of writing a story that is brought alive before your eyes. The emotions written are felt completely on the surface as you’re taken on it’s roller coaster ride. It’s a wonderfully written story that had me hooked and I’m not one for historical reads but this one didn’t disappoint. The characters are complex and pull you right in. I’m definitely going back to read more of these stories. Highly recommend this book! Giving it a four star review!
I've read some phenomenal fiction based on WWII and it usually takes place AFTER the war. This was a different take for me and I was afraid that it was going to either be TOO MUCH or NOT ENOUGH. It was absolutely perfect.
The characters are written in such a way that the reader is able to connect almost immediately. Emotions of all types are felt and the point of view that it's told carries it along nicely.
There is a lot I could say about this book, but I think the best thing I can say is READ THIS BOOK. I have not read anything from this author before and I will absolutely be adding her to my "authors I follow" list.
There’re certain time periods I never really felt like reading about or listening to the teacher talk about. That includes any talk about the Soviet Army. I like some parts of history but more the uppity time of stories. I felt like I was getting a history lesson throughout the whole story. But it was very compelling and gave me a new view of history. You could truly imagine the hardship the characters experienced through the authors words. Another book that highlights how strong, resilient, determined and brave people can be.
What a beautifully written book. Marion Kummerow does a wonderful job weaving her tale of war and struggle. The words become very real and gripped me immediately. Although this is part of a series, I read it as a stand-alone without difficulty. Overall this book was very well written. I appreciated the voice the author used and the depth put into the characters.
Uncommon Sacrifice (War Girls Book 6) By: Marion Kummerow 5 out of 5 stars
The story Uncommon Sacrifice (War Girls Book 6) by Marion Kummerow is a historical fiction book. This is a story that I enjoyed reading. It shows the strength of both friendship and family ties. It is a story of survival, sacrifice, and determination. The book is set in the time of WWII. The story tells about three characters, Peter, Stan, and Anna. Each one trying to survive another day and get back to the ones that they love. This period of time, unfortunately, is one where great atrocities and crimes are committed. It is a dark time when trying to save someone can have consequences. While the atmosphere that they live in is dark, there is a hope that is in the back of each of their minds. Hope of liberation and being reunited with loved ones. It shows the reason that we must “never forget.” I loved reading about the strength shown by Peter, Stan, and Anna in the face of tough choices that have to be made. It is a story that I found to be well-written and also one that I found myself thinking about after I had finished. It is a book that I would recommend reading.
Uncommon Sacrifice by Marion Kummerow is the sixth book in the War Girls series. This book can be read as a stand-alone. Peter would give anything to have a different life. Stuck in a Nazi prison camp he dreams of getting out. Some days it is all he dreams about. And then, one day his dream is answered when his wife, Anna orchestrates an escape for him. However, in order for him to be free he has to leave behind his brother. His injured brother who is relying solely on the support of his family to get through each day. Can Peter leave him behind in order to save himself? Or will he sacrifice his own freedom in order to prolong his brothers life?
I knew from the moment I read the blurb that this book would be emotional. Having to choose between one family member and another - your own desire and your family - is a choice that is always bound to be difficult. Peter’s story had me hooked straight away. The whole idea was so real and captivating that I had to keep reading to find out what he would do and how the story would resolve itself. The book takes you on an emotional rollercoaster for sure. I will definitely be going back to read the rest of this series.
This is my first book by this author and I enjoyed it from beginning to end. I enjoyed how she was able to take a situation and make me feel as if I was right there. They took me on an emotional roller coaster ride that had me laughing in one part and feeling compassion the next. I enjoyed the determination that each of the characters seem to have which makes them even more relateable and enjoyable. This is a story about survival, find out who will survive this war. I highly recommend this book
This was a sensational tear-jerker of a novel from Marion Kummerow. I have never read anything from her before, but this will not be my last that is a promise! Given that this is the sixth book in the War Girls series, it did not affect my ability to enjoy it, but book one, War Girl Ursula, will be the starting point for me to begin devouring her other available novels. She also has non-fiction works available, if that is your cup of tea. I personally have been a huge fan of literature that has been centered on the WWII era since my middle school days, and this book happened to touch on that exactly, so immediately I was sold. I also knew I would be very much in need of the tissues by the end of the novel, which I did very much, so fair warning.
Peter is living in the worst of all hells on Earth. His days are spent dreaming of how to get out of the Nazi prison camp he calls home. One day all those dreams become possible when his wife coordinates an escape plan for him. There is one major hitch in the plan though. Peter’s brother. His brother is injured and already solely relying on his family to simply get through each day and the simplest of tasks. He will have to leave him behind. Can he sacrifice the life of his brother for his freedom? Is it worth it to simply prolong his brother’s life just a little bit? Death is certain for everyone eventually. Right? What would you do if you were forced to make a decision like this?

5 Stars
Awesome!! This is my first book by this author, I read the synopsis and was curious and decided to go out of my comfort zone and read a book that would normally never hit my kindle. These kinds of stories don't normally hold my attention and are sometimes too real and they just simply bother me. This one though…..WOW...I read every single word, and found it really hard to put down to do real life stuff. I was worried after the first couple pages that it was going to fall flat for me as these types of books normally do. After those few pages it didn't take long and I was 100% invested in this story. All I can say is that it must be the authors writing because it was completely and utterly amazing. It was not a very long book but was so full of perfectly written content that I can not explain how much I enjoyed reading this. I am also now looking back to the first 5 of this series and do believe I will be reading them all because now I can not wait for the next. It absolutely can be read as a standalone but I can tell there's history with many of the characters that I really want.
I highly highly recommend this story!! It was simply amazing!!
Uncommon Sacrifice (War Girls #6) By Marion Kummerow 4 stars
When I first picked up this book I will be honest and say I didn’t know what to expect. Although book 6 in the series and this being the first that I have read (both in the series and by this author) I was worried I would be lost but I wasn’t at all and feel that it can be read as a standalone. It did take me a little time to get into the story, it’s an era I haven’t really read many books about but I ended up really enjoying it. The author really made me think about the characters, what they must have experienced and it felt so real. It really did feel like I was reading a historical book about this time and not a story. The bond between the brothers was like no other and what they went through in order to help each other was admirable. They had strength, determination and courage. I found I was quite emotional at times whilst reading this book and I put that down to how real it felt. I think the author did a great job with Uncommon Sacrifice and I look forward to more from her in the future.
Once again, I've jumped into the middle of a series! However, I had no difficulties with missing backstories or context, & such. I don't usually like books that jump around between characters or places, but I really DID like this one! The separate, yet entwined, stories are not at all confusing to me as so many others have been, because they are so seamlessly meshed together. In THIS book, I appreciated getting the different perspectives on things. The only thing I didn't like is that, although this is a work of fiction, the stories & events it shared, happened to real people, in real life, all over Europe. I recommend this book to historical fiction readers because it has so many layers to peel through, through different POV's. It is far from "boring old history", which I personally don't believe is a thing, or predictable historical romances which are basically the same story with different names for the characters & places! It is my opinion that this book will cause the reader to think, not simply vacuum words from a page.
This is a book out of my comfort genre but I did really enjoy it. I was quite impressed with the author's unique way of handling the subject matter in which she chose. The characters totally came to life for me as I read. The whole book had me glued to the pages to see how the story would progress.
The characters in this book quickly found their way into my heart as I felt I was going through the experiences with them. To feel the determination and the fight within them was a unique experience as I read the book. The shear terror of war that they go through along with the uncertainties. I really felt as though I was there alongside them and couldn't put the book down for wanting to know how it would end. I would like to read more from this author in the future.
Uncommon Sacrifice (War Girls Book 6) Marion Kummerow is an historical fiction story and a very interesting read. It broke my heart to see how people were treated during a time of war, WWII. The story is one of survival and will, sacrifice and determination, friendship and love. Each character went through their own personal hell to survive, in one way or another and would do anything to find their way back to the ones they love. Marion writes of dark times where war crimes were committed and atrocities are committed against humans. We just don’t know how lucky we are to live in a world that we do. It is one thought provoking and heart wrenching read but a story that is well written and well worth the read.
5 Star Uncommon Sacrifice(War Girls Book 6) By Marion Kummerow is an amazing story about surviving in the time war. This is my first book by this author but it definitely won't be my last. This can be read as a standalone and I’m definitely going back and reading the other books in this series as well. In this story we're takin on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. We travel through a time of so much pain and sacrifice This author's ability to make you feel as if you are right there with the characters is amazing. I love historical books and this one didn't disappoint. I highly recommend this book and can't wait to read more from this author.
Uncommon Sacrifice is the sixth book in the War Girls series by Marion Kummerow. This story can be a standalone book. Marion Kummerow writing style was easy flowing that kept me guessing at times. The story itself is a historical fiction which made me not want to read it, but I am VERY happy that I did because I loved this story. The story of two brothers and the struggles they had to go through. There were tough decisions made and I could not have seen a different outcome then Kummerow chose.
The research and realism in this story is fantastic, even if it saddens the heart to know so many people suffered such horrible experiences due to war, especially one that had gone on so long. However, the ending left me with a sense of hope and assurance that the human spirit is strong enough to overcome and move on to a better future. Very well-written, and an excellent story.
This is a tough book exploring things about WWII one would rather not know. Hunger, imprisonment, bombings, a death march, rape, mutilation, murder ... And yet it was important for me to read it as it opened my eyes to the reasons for a part of my parents' war experiences, stories I have heard but never fully understood. A big thank you to the author for taking it on, for doing all the research and knitting it into a tale one can relate to. In the midst of it, hope never dies.
So much pain and sorrow in WWII. I had only learned about the American side of the war. The reality of the war for the Allies is heartbreaking. How those people survived and rebuilt is amazing.
Part of a WWII story of family members and their different experiences. Can be read as a stand alone without problem. This book goes to the end of the war and the beginning of the new peace.
Uncommon Sacrifice (War Girls Book 6) By Marion Kummerow Rated 5 stars!!
I loved reading this! But I can not even fathom being caught in a war of nationality. Families torn apart. Secrets meant to be kept. Constantly searching and wondering where a loved one is. If they are still alive or have perished. Homes being destroyed. The anguish they live with everyday for all of the unknowns. That is why I am in awe of these characters! They have strength, honor and determination that is impressive. Once I realized the ages of these characters....WOW I was more inspired by their grit.
This story is told from three POV. The three main characters are all in different positions. One is in a concentration camp, one is a soldier and the last is trying to keep alive on the home front. Two polish and one German. They each have many obstacles to overcome.
I was very interested in reading this story. For some reason WW2 has always fascinated me. This author did a wonderful job. I was drawn in by the characters and what they had to do to survive the times. I found myself reading faster and faster to figure out each persons resolve.
This is my first book in the series and by this author. I became invested in the outcome for each character. The writing really drew me in and didn’t let go. The wording flowed so nicely as the story unfolded. This book/story just really touched my heart. I loved it! I would not hesitate to read more of this author. I highly recommend!
