This fast paced thriller jumps right into action from the very first page. Shanna is on the run after her boss frames her for murder. She meets Jace who is a loner, but agrees to help prove her innocence. I enjoyed the fast pace of this story and felt my heart pounding so fast as I turned each page!
Great Lifetime movie story to share. Peterson tells of greed and money and its power over the laws that are suppose to protect the everyday citizen. Shanna is on the run from a bullet shot by her boss. Accountant of a major mining company has put her in a position to view sensitive information that will ruin her boss but she does not know what it is. With the help of Jace a rancher with his own secrets; they bob and weave to escape discovery. Bit of romance mixed in of course and the lesson that all is not what it seems and trust can to deadly. "A copy of this book was supplied by Season Publishing via NetGalley with no requirement for a review. "Comments here are my honest opinion."
So, I came REALLY close to DNFing this one, folks. But I hate to DNF, especially when I get the book from NetGalley, so inexplicably, I persevered and made it through to the very end. I wish I could say things got better as I got to the end. They didn’t.
There were a number of points early on in the story where I started to question Shanna’s intelligence. And if there’s one thing that pisses me off in romantic suspense, it’s a TSTL heroine. For example, here are my questions for Shanna:
1. It didn’t seem at all weird to you that your boss, the CEO of a huge corporation, asked you, a lowly accountant, out on a corporate hunting trip? I mean, it wouldn’t be so weird if you were a hunter...but you aren’t. So, why in the ever lovin’ hell would you agree to go hunting, even if you thought you were possibly up for a promotion? Surely if you deserved a promotion, it wouldn’t hinge on whether or not you could shoot Bambi.
2. So, your ex-husband was an embezzler, and your boss is trying to kill you? Wow. You have crap luck, Shanna. Or perhaps you should reconsider some (or all) of your life choices?
3. You met with the SEC a week before your boss tries to kill you, and you’re still confused as to why he might want to kill you? Really? Hmmm...seems pretty obvious to me.
4. Your first instinct when you’re about to be attacked by a big dog is to put your leg in its mouth so that it can’t bite the big strong rancher/ex-cop who has come to your rescue? Now I’m starting to understand why your boss wants you dead. I kind of want you dead, too.
5. You trusted your ex-husband and he let you down, you trusted your boss and he tried to kill you, and you trusted another person (whose name I won’t disclose because it would be spoilery), and that person betrayed you. You know what the common denominator is? YOU, Shanna. It’s YOU. It’s time to consider the possibility that you’re an idiot and your judgement is crap.
Even if I was able to overlook Shanna’s stupidity, (which I’m not) I’d still be confronted with Jace’s behavior, which didn’t strike me as particularly realistic, either. I mean, here’s a woman you don’t know, claiming innocence while trying to steal your car, and the police tell you she’s a murderer. What’s your reaction? Why, sneak her out of town, of course! Hike up a mountain and fight off vicious guard dogs for her, obvs. Duh. (I’m side-eyeing Jace pretty hard at this point in the story)
Then to find out later that he’s an ex-cop with a prison record? That makes his actions all the more ridiculous. He should’ve avoided Shanna like I avoid doing squats and eating cauliflower. (Just to be clear: I hate everything about cauliflower and was once almost crippled for a week from doing squats, so that’ll never happen again.)
But outside of his completely unrealistic motivation for helping Shanna, Jace wasn’t a terrible hero. He was strong and capable and kind-hearted, which kind of makes me wish I could fix him up with a heroine from another novel, because he can definitely do better than this one.
So, at the end of the day, Jace earns this book 1 star, and I award the other star because while I hated the heroine, the story was technically well-written.
Full disclosure: We received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
A new year means a new genre to give a chance. This is only my second thriller, and I think it will be a genre I can read once in a while.
This story was fast-paced, dramatic and had a nice plot. The characters were decent, but they didn’t captivate me enough to truly root for them. So a 2,5 star rating from this new thriller reader.
It was ok...that's about it for me on this one. I thought the so called friend was a little weird, but then that made sense toward the end of the story. The main male and female characters seemed to get along well which made for a nice ending.
Rating: R (sexual content) Language: to be honest I can't remember if there was any profanity. Maybe one or two f-bombs? Recommend: Probably not.
This story had so much potential but unfortunately it fell short for me.
First, I swear Shanna is a complete airhead. She doesn't question anything; from the get go she doesn't find it odd that her boss invited her on a hunting trip when she's never once shot a gun? Second, she doesn't think about consequences of her behaviors or actions. Third, she only gives partial truths when people need to know the full story to help her.
Jace...I can't see why someone who has never met this woman or has any ties to any of the people involved (except a random neighbor he bought land off of) would suddenly risk his life. Retired cop or not, there should have been some hesitancy.
The actions that nearly got them caught were just complete and utter stupidity ones. For a retired cop, he should have squashed some of the crazy ideas that Shanna had.
Loved this. The whole mystery was very good, it took a lot of turns and I like that. Shanna was a good woman that saw herself in the crosshairs of a powerful man and no way of saving herself and her daugther. Then cames Jace, he doesn't want to care but he can't help it. He helps even knowing that could be real consequences for him, that's how good a man he is. I liked them, they made a good couple
Shanna Clarke accepts an invitation from her boss, Mr. Barstow, CEO of Talbot, to join him in a hunting party in the woods, thinking she’s up for a promotion. But just then things get weird. Suddenly, her boss starts shooting at her but she manages to escape with minor scrapes.
At the same time, Jace Lantry hears the gunshots coming from the mountains and sights Shanna running towards his cabin.
When Jace learns about the incident in the woods, he realizes he has to protect Shanna.
Interesting concept, certainly a thriller, but I gave it three stars because I figured the why at the beginning of the book. Still a good read and definitely a good mystery read.
I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Manhunt was an enjoyable fast-paced romantic suspense. Shanna is being hunted and Jace is just the man to help her. You’ll be quickly turning the pages till the end.
IF YOU EVER HAVE TO RUN “THE GAUNTLET” LIKE IN THAT OLD CLINT EASTWOOD MOVIE AND CLINT’S NOT THERE, JACE WOULD BE YOUR MAN. JACE & SHANNON ARE IN A SITUTATION LIKE THAT, I LIKED THAT THEY KEPT THEIR MIND ON WHAT WAS IMPORTANT ONLY LOOSING FOCUS ONE TIME. ACTION AND A NICE SLOW FALLING IN LOVE, ROMANTIC.;D
Manhunt (Aka Wyoming Manhunt) is the first book in the Rocky Mountain Thriller Series by Ann Voss Peterson. Ms. Peterson is a new to me author who I honestly wished I’d discovered well before now. This is a fantastic romantic suspense/thriller- with heart-pounding action, adventure, danger, suspense, mystery, revenge, chemistry, twists & turns, and intensity. Shanna Clark is an accountant who thinks she’s out for a weekend bonding experience with her work colleagues, deep in the mountain wilderness. Instead she finds herself being shot at- that has to be a mistake, right? But after a few shots, she realises that it’s no mistake- she’s definitely got a target on her back. So, she does the only thing left to do- flee. She’s on the run with determined hunter’s hot on her trail. She needs a stroke of luck to get her out of this situation. Luckily, she stumbles onto a small ranch where she hope to get some help. But- who can she really trust?? She’s going to have to figure out what’s going on and why- if she has any chance of survival. That’s how she finds herself on a cross-country trek, with a hunky stranger- dodging bullets, fighting mother nature, determined to stay alive and get back home to her daughter. But now there’s a state-wide manhunt for her- as she’s wanted for murder! What??? Wait a minute, she didn’t even pick up a gun so how could she murder anyone? You really should read this gripping story and get all the eye-popping answers for yourself. I loved all the twists and turns that this story took me on. I was hooked right from the start, where it jumped right into the action. It was intriguing, suspenseful, sexy, touching, and very cleverly woven. I have already gone back to grab more of Ms. Voss Peterson’s Books to read!! This is a series of standalone romantic suspense/thrillers…. I Can’t wait to find out what happens in book/s 2 & 3.
Manhunt is the first book in Ann Voss Patterson’s A Rocky Mountain Thriller series. As the subtitle infers, this book is a thriller. From the very beginning there is action. Readers meet the female lead character, Shanna Clarke, with a heart stopping bam! She is fleeing for her life with bullets zipping past her as her boss, Mr. Barstow, is shooting at her. Her flight leads her to the male lead character, Jace Lantry, a reclusive rancher and former police detective, who was framed for a crime he did not do. Want to know what happens? You must read this suspenseful and riveting thriller to follow Shanna and Jace’s journey to uncover the truth behind Barstow’s attack on Shanna.
I enjoyed this character-driven plot with a theme of betrayal versus trust. I liked how Ms. Patterson wove in motivating forces of greed, corruption, and abuse of power to move her plot along. I enjoyed Shanna and Jace’s quest as they hunted for truth as to Barstow’s reason for eliminating Shanna. Ms. Patterson’s characters, both primary and secondary were well-designed. They were multi-layered. I enjoyed how they were both disillusioned with romance, but still had hope. I liked how she was trusting and he was skeptical. She was optimistic and he was pragmatic. Both, however, were doggedly motivated on their quest for truth. I appreciated Ms. Patterson’s use of descriptive language. Her picturesque nature scenes were realistic. Her action scenes were riveting. I particularly liked the scene where Jase was in the closet in Shanna’s apartment when the villains came to retrieve her laptop. I thought Ms. Patterson cleverly built tension with several red herrings as to who was working with Barstow. The only thing I found lacking was I did not walk away with a concise explanation as to the full motivation of Barstow’s evil doings. Nevertheless, this was a riveting read. Well done, Ms. Patterson.
After reading the synopsis I really thought I wasn't going to like anything about this free (Amazon) read as I thought it would be too predictable and unbelievable. To my surprise, I actually liked the story.
Shanna Clarke has gotten herself in a heap of trouble and doesn't even know why. Imagine thinking you're going to get a job promotion, instead you find out you are getting a job demotion-a permanent one. Shanna accompanies her boss and her colleagues on a hunting trip and becomes prey when her boss sets his scope on her. Shanna flees and finds herself once again on the end of a scope when she tries to take rancher Jace Lantry's pickup truck.
Eventually, Jace listens to Shanna's wild story and decides to help her escape from the men shooting at her although he is still a bit wary of her. When Jace runs into the sheriff on skulking around his property and he tells Jace that Shanna is wanted for shooting and killing her lover. After debating the truth of the tale, Jace aids Shanna in her escape and the two on the run from Shanna's boss as well as the law. Shanna convinces Jace that she has to get back to her office and figure out why her boss wants her dead. Another homicide later and Shanna is public enemy number one--her face is splashed all over the news and roadblocks have been set up to capture her.
Predictably Jace and Shanna fall for each other in their three or four days on the run and Jace is "all in" although Jace still doesn't know all he needs to know about Shanna. Jace finally comes clean and confesses he is a former lawman and has had his own issues with the law. Shanna continues to hold back the fact that she has a daughter who is being looked after by her best friend Linda. Shanna naively and foolishly believes Linda will believe her story of innocence as easily as Jace. After all, she is her best friend. However, Linda has her own agenda and Shanna and her daughter may end up casualties of it.
When Shanna's boss takes a shot at her on a supposedly 'fun' weekend hunting trip, she knows she has to get help. But who? And why is he trying to kill her? The police won't protect her, her boss has paid them off. She's got nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, until she stumbles into Jace's cabin in the Wyoming wilderness. Former cop and all around rugged guy, Jace isn't sure if he believes Shanna. All he knows is that he sees the desperation in her eyes and hears the fear in her voice and knows he's got to help her.
I haven't read anything from Ms. Peterson before, but this short novel definitely grabbed me from the word go. The action didn't slow until the very end and I my heart was pounding in time with the heroine's.
I absolutely loved Shanna and Jace. I felt they were fully fleshed out characters with motivations, wants, and personality. Shanna wasn't weak and she wasn't "The load." Jace might be an alpha male, but he knew when to listen to Shanna and he knew when he'd gone to far. Even offering apologies with no expectation of being forgiven. That was definitely a turn on. I also liked the side characters. Emily, Shanna's daughter, felt like a real kid and her co-workers also had their own personalities and motivations. I really loved Dirk; I wanted to give the guy a hug.
There was definitely the right amount of suspense and surprises. I called one "twist" early on (the foreshadowing was there). But I was surprised by a few other things that happened in the book, but looking back I see the breadcrumbs were there all along. Which is a good thing.
In all, I really enjoyed this book. I'd definitely recommend it to people into a short, but intense read.
Five stars

A thrill a minute! A wild read , uh ride through Wyoming wilderness!
Manhunt by Ann Voss Peterson is a first read for me and it will probably not be the last. Manhunt is not my usual romantic suspense novel as the story focuses more on the thrilling race to find justice in a world where justice is not blind, then on the romance between the two main characters. I enjoyed the plot twists that kept me glued to the pages trying to anticipate what would happen next. I wondered if it was possible for this novel to end in happily ever after; a must in any novel I read. But I think what struck me the most was that rather than escape, which I normally read for, I found myself considering if there was some truth to what Ms. Peterson eludes to about our legal system and it's possible flaws. I was not sure at first if I enjoyed being so introspective since escape from reality is my goal. I finally concluded that to be so caught up in a story, trying to figure how the main characters could find their happily ever after, while wondering if a corrupt, flawed system would bring the heroes down, was still an escape. I was even more engaged with Ann Voss Peterson's characters than any other romance characters in the past. The book engaged both my mind as well as my soul. Not the first novel to do this but certainly unusual is this genre. So in the end I found this book to be very entertaing, engaging and the characters so well -developed that they could have been my neighbors! Delightful ,intriguing and well worth the time I took to read it. Thank you Ann Voss Peterson for introducing me to another series I can loose myself in and learn a bit more about myself at the same time! Well done!
The blurb on this book is very accurate, in that Manhunt is a highly suspenseful, heart stopping drama. From the opening sentence to the closing chapter, the reader is kept engrossed. Shanna wasn't looking for adventure. All she wanted was security for her daughter's future and she joined the corporate hunting trip because she thought that she was going to hear about her hard earned promotion. Jace wasn't looking for adventure either. He had had enough of that in his past life, and yet it found him by way of a diminutive female hiding in his truck. With his history Jace wasn't at all interested in helping her, and yet there was something that made him realise that he was all she had. And so the race began. Jace makes a heart melting hero, and Shanna is the kind of woman most of us would like to be like: resourceful, proactive even when scared witless, with endurance to spare. I really had my doubts that Shanna and Jace would make it right up until the very end. Romance was secondary to this story, however it did provide moments of light relief, without which the suspense would have been too much. This book is well written and easy to read, but be warned that it is hard to put down and therefore may interfere with one's daily routine. It is also part of a series, however can be read as a standalone. I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily post this review. This is my honest review.
**I received a copy of Manhunt from Net Galley in exchange for a honest and voluntary review**
Manhunt by Ann Voss Peterson is the first book in her Rocky Mountain Thriller series and if they are all as good as this one I'll have to add more gift cards to my book budget. I haven't read this author before and it won't be the last one.
Shanna and her daughter are starting over after her ex-husbands betrayal in Palmer, Wyoming. When she quickly rises up the ranks at her job. When her boss invites her along on a hunting trip she doesn't think he'll be trying to kill her what what she knows but doesn't remember. When she escapes and meets Jace Lantry they are so on the run from not only her boss but the sheriff also.
Jace Lantry is also starting over after being betrayed by his own partner on his last case as a cop. He paid for it with jail time so when Shanna shows up with a bizarre story he hesitates to help. When he agrees to take her to her office Jace doesn't expect to also be running with both of their lives in danger. I loved how he always seemed to find a way to get them what they needed to survive and how when Shanna's daughter gives him her treasured Red Power Ranger he takes it knowing that not only does Emily trust him but Shanna as well. There are plot twists with every page turn and a surprise ending that will have you saying I didn't see that coming. All in all a wonderful book and now I need to get the other two books so I can finish the series.
I read this book back to back from another book of this author and I’m sorry to say that this book was greatly overshadowed by my previous reading experience. Not that this wasn’t an entertaining book but it just couldn’t measure up to the previous one. In any case, Shanna Clarke and Jason “Jace” Lantry , the lead characters, were well enough portrayed but I expected a little bit more! Some more background information might’ve offered a bit more interest. Needless to say that I expected something like “katharsis” regarding Jace’s prison time. As it was, this fact was brought up to make his character interesting but then this thread just remained unexploited. Shanna on the other had, was definitely likable but her character development fell completely flat.
The plot was a bit unrealistic, which didn’t bother me at all. That’s what fiction is for! However, this doesn’t mean that the plot can fall short.... which it did, in this case... sorry to say that the storyline fell flat and was slightly predictable. In any case, after reading another book by this author I expected more and was just a tiny winy disappointed.
At 70%, I just can't take any more. Did Not Finish, although before I send this review out, I'll skim to the end. First, my issues with this novel.
#1, thrillers are supposed to be surprising. #2, the mining business seemed poorly researched, and the bad guy's incentive therefore sketchy. #3, Throughout this story, this apparently female author has her woman lead ask some of the stupidest questions in the history of humanity (and she does it with the woman best friend, too). There is so little to the MC woman that the MC man's interest in and respect for her is unfounded. #4 I bailed at the sex scene. There's so much wrong with it that I'm not going to bother listing any. Suffice to say, no! Not on a filthy car, you idiot. Ew.
The skimming results: #5 oh good lord, no. #6 ffs #7 OH COME ON.
So, no. The writing is amateurish, the plot is TV episode-level predictable, the characters are almost okay until they talk. The end has all the excitement of a closing door. I belatedly wonder if the bad guy died, but I don't care.
I obtained this free e-book from Amazon and I am voluntarily writing a review. Shanna is a single mother working as an accountant for a mining company in Wyoming. She is up for a promotion and has been invited by her boss on a deer hunting trip presumably to talk about her promotion. It soon becomes crystal clear she is the object of the hunt when her boss takes several shots at her with his rifle. She manages to escape to the next ranch where she is able to hide in the garage in the truck that is there. Jace is a disillusioned ex-police officer after being framed for a crime he did not commit by his ex-partner and lover and doing prison time. He wants as far away from people as he can get and has bought a ranch in Wyoming. Imagine his surprise when he finds a frightened woman in his truck getting ready to "borrow it"
Manhunt is an interesting story that starts off with a bang. You are dumped right into the action right from page one.
This is Shanna's story of how she was targeted by her boss. Shanna is hoping that the invite to come hunting with her boss will result in a new promotion but once she gets out into the wilderness, things take a dangerous turn.
She becomes the target. And she has no idea why. She manages to escape and is on the run, but knows that she can't run without some help. That's where Jace comes in. He reluctantly helps her. And it's only following his gut that he even remotely believes her.
What follows then is a story of them racing against her boss to find out why he wants her dead. Their romance heats up pretty fast. And there's a sexy scene early in their romance. Check out more details here: http://bit.ly/2opOGAp
Shanna is an accountant and trying to give her little girl the best life she can. Her ex embezzled money from his job and she’s still trying to get out from under that. Her boss takes her on a hunting trip and she thinks she’s getting a promotion. She finds out differently when he starts shooting at her. She runs through the forest and comes upon a ranch. Jace is a former cop and after serving time in jail, likes living out by himself and working his ranch. He doesn’t want to get mixed up in whatever Shanna has going on but he hides her. They travel by truck, motor bikes, and walking. While they are running for their lives, Shanna and Jace try to figure out why her boss wants to kill her.
From the first page to the last, is pulse pounding action and suspense. I would have to stop reading because I was scared of what would happen next.
3.5 stars Shanna thinks she’s on a hunting trip with her boss to talk over her promotion. However, it becomes clear that she’s the one Bri g hunted and she has no reason why. All she can focus on is staying alive for her daughter. Jace finds Shana as she is running away from something. He doesn’t want to get involved, but as an ex-cop, he’s compelled to at least hear her out. That slowly turns in to him helping her figure out why her boss turned on her. In the midst of uncertainty, trust issues and a need for the truth, Jace and Shanna let down their guards a bit. Could there be a future for them? This was a satisfying read full of intrigue and drama. I really enjoyed it.
A complex web of mystery, right from the beginning, with Shanna being shot at by her boss on a hunting trip. As she runs, she stumbles upon Jace, mountain man.
His tragedy is being a cop who’s framed because a rich guy bought out police and threatened his partner’s children.
Jace believes Shanna is innocent, though it’s being spread she killed two people. As they sort out why she’s being hunted by her boss and the local sheriff, things get more confusing for them. She has two friends she relies upon, Linda, who’s looking after Shanna’s daughter, and Dirk, a security guard at her employer.
Things finally fall into place, but with a dramatic climax and a test of Shanna’s strength and Jace’s trust.
I received a copy of this book from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily review this book. This is my honest review.
Wow, I don't know where to begin. I really liked Shanna for being able to think on her feet in order to survive. Then she runs into Jace at his home and is able to get his help, even though he has been through his own horrible ordeal. Despite his misgivings, Jace goes on the run with Shanna and does everything he can to help her solve her problem. I definitely loved Jace because of how he put himself out there and helped a complete stranger. This was definitely a page-turner with several unexpected twists. I highly recommend this book.
While this book was published previously, this was my first time reading it. I will start by saying it was definitely not realistic, but I'm not of the opinion that fiction always has to be. It made for a relaxing night of escapism. Jace was my favorite part of this book. He was surly, sexy, and not at all interested in getting involved with Shanna. He eventually decides to trust her, and they have some pretty steamy moments. As far as action, this story actually has quite a bit going on as Shanna and Jace first run for their lives then end up having to hide from law enforcement. It makes for a pretty entertaining read.

I almost didn't finish this one, dnf-ing it at 69%. I simply had a moment of giving up. Then I stiffened by spine and kept on reading. The result is the same...Didn't like it.
It was definitely too long for what it tried to do, piling up twists and turns that failed to heighten the intensity and ended up boring me instead. I felt no connection to the two protagonists, their "romance" left me cold...And once I realized the whole story was based on a simple misunderstanding (that ended up having deadly consequences), I truly wished I stopped reading sooner.
