This quaint mystery is about the Rae family of witches. There seems to be a bunch of stranger than usual things happening in their small town but not one thing can be resolved before another occurs.
The writing very well done, the scenery and dialogue flow well and the plot is twisted enough to keep up the pace but missing words and grammar issues kept me from giving this a higher rating.
...the story definitely needs more work. A lot of unfinished (to me) scenes where something is said or done but there is no conclusion. Examples - Cookie's maid wandering around Missy's workshop; Elliot's explanation about the spell books. Too many wrong / missing words and punctuation guffaws aplenty. Very distracting to me.
The premise of the tale was good and the characters were funny as heck. Granny Lola's a fun and feisty one, popping in on Missy every chance she gets to spook her as she barks orders to eat dreaded lemon treats or break into someone's house to find her missing body. Missy and her friend Jake hold down the shop while keeping everyone unaware of Lola's invisibility. And it is hard to keep up the facade with everyone constantly asking where the town matron is. Plus Missy's got her own problems - an estranged mother and boyfriend, his bulldozer of a mother, Missy's little cat terrors, and the new hottie in town who Jake-Anne keeps pushing her to fall for. A bad witch making a power play is not something Missy is prepared to handle. A wild romp in a small town. Poppy County is the place to be for all sorts of mischief.
This story is quite amusing with a lot of mysterious things happening all the time. Missy Rae lives with her grandmother Granny Lola Rae. When we first meet Granny Lola she is a ghost. But is she really dead? The Rae family has a secret that they will do absolutely anything to keep.
Missy is a pretty typical young woman who loves her grandmother to bits. So much so that she puts up with Lola's pranks and does everything she asks whether she likes the ideas or not. Granny Lola is constantly doing things she finds funny but others don't. She gets quite a kick out of being able to move around and 'haunt' people when they can't see her. Missy is the only one who can see and hear her grandmother.
It took me a few chapters before I figured out who Missy and Lola were and that they were witches so I found it a little hard to get into but after that I really enjoyed it.
Millicent (Missy) is good witch but untrained. Her boyfriend has been ghosting her for a few months, about when her grandmother's spell goes horribly wrong. They have to fix it. The characters are funny and quirky. There's enough suspense to keep me from putting it down, and enough humor to be fun to read.
While the editing could have been better, overall this was a pretty excellent story. Missy, Grandma Lola, and the whole crazy cast of characters were delightful and the mystery revolving around why Grandma Lola couldn't fix her spell was hilarious! I'll definitely be reading the next in this series.
This is the first book I have read from this author, but it won't be the last. It was a quick read that had me hooked from the start. If you like cozy mysteries this book is for you. The characters were believable and interesting. Can 't wait to read more.
Bad, just bad. It jumps around, the pacing is a mess and it needs an editor. But what really ruined it is that it's literally like 95% dialogue. It's really hard to make a novel work when it is all dialogue, and not even good dialogue. Mallory didn't manage it.
I just couldn't carry on. I only got about 10% into the story before I gave up. The characters were annoying. I didn't understand what was going on and why it was going on....and didn't care enough to hang around and find out. I really wanted to like the book, but couldn't.
I thought this was a good book, it has a few errors but not enough to distract you. The plot was good and I love grandma she's a hoot! Looking forward to reading the next book.
This was a good cozy mystery a little more involved than others I've read of Ava Mallory's but good none the less. Can't wait to read more of her books.
I enjoyed this book. It is a fun witch story. It is the first book in the series and is a good introduction to the characters. The characters are interesting and funny. I really like Missy's Grandmother. I look forward to reading more in this series.
Missy is a witch although she doesn’t have any training. Her grandmother is someplace between alive and a ghost. There’s a strange man in town who seems to want to help, but does he really? Cute story, great characters!
My - very personal - view of this book is: not worth reading. Although the plot did not sound bad at all, I could not relate to the characters, nor to the storytelling as such. My 7 year old nephew tells stories this way: start at one end, jump to the next chapter and forget half of what's going on between chapters. This is the feeling I had with this book: always something, some events, some dialogues seemed to be missing. This appears to be a series, and I was under the impression this was the first book, but I felt that a lot happened before this story even started, and was not explained to me as the reader. It looked to me as if, whilst editing, the author or editor deleted chapters and paragraphs instead of the numerous spelling errors.
Light hearted, amusing story of the Rae family of witches. With an invisible Grandmother, a mother who doesn't want to have anything to do with her witchy side, and a daughter who doesn't know much about her family's talents, this is the funny tale of Missy Rae as she tries to come to terms with it all. Add in a handsome new neighbor just as Missy as broken up with her long time boyfriend and you come up with an enjoyable story.
Oh my!! My cheeks hurt from laughing!! This is a fun, witchy, cosy mystery and I loved it! Granny Lola is hilarious! She goes out and finds trouble, while trouble seems to find Missy... Missy comes from a long line of witches, on one hand her mother will not practice the craft, yet granny Lola loves it. I cannot wait to read more from this series, I think Ava Mallory has done an excellent job. Full of mystery, full of love, full of laughter and witchy goodness. It's written well, great characters and an intriguing storyline. 5 stars from me!! #2OCCAB
I cannot wait to read book 2 in this series. This book has a lot of twists and turns and you do not know what to expect on the next page. I liked it a lot.
If a story is going to be "paranormal" it needs more paranormal. Overall it wasn't a bad book. It was a quick read. Needs more "paranormal activity". Posted on another site.
From pov inconsistencies to grammatical errors and incomplete scenes to being short changed on character interactions, I just can't like this book. Which is unfortunate since it is a good story idea.
