I wanted to like this so much more than I did. Part of the problem was that it's an "origin" story for a group of 7? women with supernatural powers. And we're talking "Here's how they were born" origins. So we barely, if at all, see any of those powers in use and the last 1/4 of the book is where these alien infants and young girls (and flash-forward 20 years to when they are now women) are on Earth and bemoaning all of the horrible injustices happening here on Earth. Valid; but after an entire book slowly bringing each of these girls to the page without much or any of this commentary; it feels heavy-handed all back-loaded to the final pages. Editing could also have used some work as there were some odd errors.
It's a very slow burn for even an origin story but the diversity of the characters (kinda? They are all aliens from other "realms" but the author refers their appearances to those of racial types found on Earth?) was nice. The comic scene in the center of the book was great; I wanted so much more of those rather than this "telling more than showing" story that we got instead. I ended up less excited for these characters and more bored; which is not how I wanted to end a story of such a (from the cover) fascinating set of superheros and world. Not sure if I'd read further; it's definitely not high on my list, sadly.
Interesting premise and an easy read. It definitely could have used some more editing though. There were spelling and grammatical errors throughout the book. Additionally,
The writing style is simple and easily comprehensible for young audiences while the themes are strong and culturally responsible. This is a fantastic series for diversifying your bookshelves!
Jazmin Truesdale is telling great stories with diverse characters! I really want her to keep it up! These are the kinds of heroes our kids should be seeing! They're all capable, smart & intelligent!
