Akito has more than skeletons hiding in the closet--the curse, dear reader, is not the only reason Kureno won't leave Akito. And who can make Arisa understand Kureno's devotion to Akito? Graduation is approaching, so everyone needs answers!
Natsuki Takaya (高屋 奈月 Takaya Natsuki, real name Naka Hatake) is the penname of a Japanese manga artist best-known for creating the series Fruits Basket. She was born on July 7, 1973; (Tanabata). Takaya is left-handed and once revealed that she wanted to be a mangaka since first grade, when her sister started drawing.
She was born in Shizuoka, Japan, but was raised in Tokyo, where she made her debut in 1992. She enjoys video games such as the Final Fantasy series or Sakura Wars, or working on her different manga series, such as Fruits Basket, which is the second best-selling shōjo manga ever in Japan, and the top selling shōjo manga in North America. Fruits Basket has also been adapted into a twenty-six-episode anime series.
In 2001, Takaya received a Kodansha Manga Award for shōjo manga for Fruits Basket.
According to Takaya (in a sidebar of a Fruits Basket manga volume), she enjoys drawing girls (girly ones) more than she does boys. Takaya also enjoys electronics and music, but dislikes talking about herself. Also revealed in a sidebar of Fruits Basket, Takaya broke her drawing arm (left) after Fruits Basket volume six was published. She had to go into surgery, and as a result, had put Fruits Basket on a brief hiatus. Takaya made a full recovery, but complains that her handwriting had gotten uglier, due to the surgery. During her hospital stay, she gained an interest in baseball.
This one was a slow volume once again but damn the revelations were tough. So many things were revealed and came out into the open; I’m kind of mind blown to be honest. *lol* Wow, just… W.O.W.! Maybe the pacing was slow but damn did this issue pack a punch. XD
Thoughts to the highlights of this volume:
- Kureno’s sacrifice broke my heart! I understand why he can’t leave Akito but boy did it make me sad to know that he loves Uo-chan but can’t be with her. T_T This felt like a punch in the face!
- THAT REVELATION ABOUT AKITO!!!! OMG!!! O_O
- I already said it and I’ll say it again: Yuki and Machi’s love story gives me LIFE!!! <333 I want them to be together so badly it’s starting to hurt! *lol* So please Natsuki Takaya, can you write them as a couple soon?! XD
- Kyo-kun handing Tohru that paper flower as an apology! *dies a thousand deaths and is happy*
- Shigure!!! I AM MIND BLOWN!!! What did I just read and did anyone see my brain?
Finally we get into Akito's head. I've spent the past 16 volumes hating Akito for his cruelty toward the rest of the Zodiac. I wondered if learning his story would make me like him any better. After reading volume 17, I still hate Akito. I pity him more. He's had a tough life and a horrific mother, but this seems to be par for the course for the Zodiac members. All have horrible childhoods and none of them are as mean as Akito. Despite his caustic personality, it's amazing the devotion the Zodiac members have towards him. It shows the power of the curse. We also learn Akito's deepest secret in this volume. Just what I thought.
The relationship that Kureno and Shigure have with Akito is, depending upon how you look at it, pretty twisted or admirably loyal. Kureno's curse was broken. He is no longer cursed by the Zodiac. It's not explained in this volume. I'm curious to know more. Even without the curse, he won't leave Akito. Shigure loves Akito. I don't know if it's a romantic relationship or more of a god-like love. I'm not sure if Shigure entirely knows either. I really enjoyed seeing a different side of Shigure. It's nice to see the class clown actually have some substance.
We didn't see much from Tohru, Yuki, or Kyo in this volume. Just a few scenes about their high school graduation. It was rather refreshing. I love the big three, but the secondary characters are so interesting that I like the time spent focused on them.
This was intense but no matter what tragic backstory you throw at me it won't change the fact that I absolutely despise Akito. The twist really doesn't change that. However, I'm still very interested in that story because of Shigure. Theirs is a twisted, messed up relationship and I'm interested to see where it all leads. Kureno, though, can just up and die and I wouldn't notice it. He bores me to tears.
This volume pissed me off to no end!!! I LOVE IT! XD I know... I'm a contradiction... it runs in the family. *Shrugs* But I'm not kidding! I was really upset with how most of this volume had me pulling my hair out! And when I got up to a certain point I was like, "Nani? Eh!? USO!!!!!!!!!!!!" Really... I'm so flustered right now. However, as I've said before, when something can make me feel so angry, so upset, that's how I know it's something great. (It's like Code Geass but that's something else that makes me super angry and we shan't talk about that... yet.) When I first started reading, I thought that half of the stuff that happened in this manga wasn't going to really get under my skin. I mean, come on, it's a shoujo manga. Unfortunately... I was wrong... how in the world did this happen to me? Me! Who hates this kind of girly crap! >_< *Sighs* But it did... AND I COULDN'T BE MORE HAPPY FOR IT! XD Oh man! This volume was so intense! Especially since it centered around Akito and we all know how much I hate that bastard! (More on him later.) I know I'm so close to finishing this series but... I think I might get an ulcer way before the end. -_-"
Takaya-sensei! How could you do this to me? I thought you and I were friends! How can you make me want to commit seppuku for reading all this crap about Akito!? You know I no like him! (I'm only kidding kids. I highly disapprove of seppukuing so DON'T DO IT!!! (("Seppukuing" is not a word...)) ...shut up!) Anyway, Sensei's abilities... oh, her abilities! They are astounding! I love that she is able to get so many emotions out of me. So many! And that's no easy task. (I can be quite apathetic when I want to be.) The fact that she makes me care for these characters and what's going on with them just makes me go into SHOCK mode. On the other hand, the way she can make me hate someone so dearly is also impressive. I've hated in the past before but Akito? Well, I hate him to a whole new level. Sore wa nanika desu, ne? (You realize most of the people who reads your reviews have no idea what that means, right?) Oh, hush you! Anyway!!! I feel so glad that Takaya-sensei has this amazing ability! I hope that she keeps it. I really do think she's a fantastic mangaka. ^_^
I don't want to write about this part... because it hurts my brain... so much so that hitting myself multiple times against the wall will not give me the satisfaction of putting me into a coma like I hoped it would. *Sighs* Well... here goes... Aki--BAH I CAN'T DO IT! IT'S TOO HORRIBLE! TOO PAINFUL FOR MY YOUNG SELF TO GO THROUGH WITH IT! THE HORROR! THE HORROR! *Gets shot* ...I will make it my goal to find out who keeps shooting me... one day! *Inhales/Exhales/Continues* Alright... so this volume mostly focused on Akito... and it pisses me off. I think the reader is meant to understand a little more why Akito acts the way he does but all I get from it is, "STOP BEING SUCH A WHINY LITTLE BABY! MAN UP, SHUT UP, AND QUIT BEING SUCH A SELFISH LITTLE BRAT!" I'm pretty sure that's not the message I'm supposed to get... actually, I'm positive that's not it. But he's just done so much crap that I don't feel sorry for him whatsoever. I don't like him and I think I'm never going to like him. If he's had such a rough time (and I don't think he's had anything of the sort) then he should have found another way to deal with it then forcing everyone to be with him. Oh! That's another thing! Not only is he selfish but he's a damn slut, too! Argh! I can't say why, though. That's a spoiler but damn it! If you've read this already then you know what I'm talking about. Selfish little... oh! It brings me to the next topic: Kureno. I love Kureno. He's pretty cool. But I do have one thing to say to him: MAN UP YOU PUSSY! (I apologize for my vulgarity. This series is starting to piss me off and I do suffer from Tourettes so... excuse me.) Ugh! I don't see why he decideds to stay by Akito's side. They do explain it and I wish I could elaborate more but... just know that I think he's being weak. *Groans* I hate weak men...
Next section that doesn't contain too much stupid but still some stupid!!! Tohru... oh, my sweet Tohru. I know how much you want to help but... SOME PEOPLE DESERVE TO ROT! -_-" Just focus on Kyo and we'll all be happy. In fact, Tohru and Kyo are the only ones that DON'T piss me off! Well, them and Haru, Rin, Momiji, and Hato--STAY AWAY FROM MY HATORI YOU LITTLE WHORE!!! *Ahem* As I was saying, there are a few characters left that are not getting on my nerves but you know... the ones that piss me off make me crack. Kyo is sooooo cute! I wants to keep him~ He makes me happy. <3 Rin is up to something but... we'll have to see what in the next volume along with Haru. *Smirks* Hanajima and Uotani... did I ever say how much I truly love them? I don't know how they came to possess such wonderful personalities (okay, I do but just follow me here) but I am so glad that they are in this story. I wish there were more people like them in the real world but nooooo! We are stuck with pricks. *Sighs* C'est la vie. Yuki and Machi are an... interesting pair. Not that they got involved or anything. I'm just saying whenever they interact, they act interesting. Machi makes me giggle. She contradicts herself, too! (People who do that kick ass~ ((*Stares at questingly*)) ...I hate you.) Yuki seems so light now. It makes me happy... It's a nice feeling... I bet. *Smiles* Now... I got one person left to talk about: Shigure. And I got one thing to say: WHY!? What's so special about the asswipe!? Can someone please explain that to me because I don't get it! (I'm just kidding, guys. Don't tell me because I don't want it to spoil me. I hate spoilers! DX) We got to see a bit more of Shigure's devious self (which I love) but at the same time... things became even muddier. I need to keep reading...
BAH! AIDSIDCISJOLDJP;DKVCKVCNJUVHZJHSIOJDCOSKPZKPAOJQIJUHNJDNJKCMVXJIJCIKSJ!!! THIS IS SO FRUSTRATING!!! HOW IS IT THAT THINGS NEVER SEEM TO MAKE SENSE! THEY JUST LOVE SHOVING THINGS INTO MY FACE SO I CAN GO, "ACK! THAT WAS MY EYE, YOU DOLT!!!" I love the twists and turns this series makes. Trust me! There's a bunch of them! This volume specifically had a secret that I completely had a "WTF!?" moment for. I did NOT see that coming! It was amazing! Are you hearing me? A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. I think you should go out and buy this series like... yesterday. Get to it! That way, you and I can fangirl together and be pissed together and cry like sissies together! Doesn't that sound fun? *Hears gun cocked* Okay! Okay! I'll leave you alone now! However... I still think you should get it. X3 Man, so good! Okay! I just have a few left! I'm off to start volume 18 now! Hopefully there's not a lot of stupid left! Knowing my luck... there probably is... T_T
This volume was a bit slower on the pacing of the plot, but the slowness allowed for a lot of backstory to be built up towards our big Akito reveal! I somewhat saw the reveal coming, but not in the way it was portrayed in the storyline. WOW!
Did I just feel slightly sorry for Akito? I think hell just froze over.
And what's this crazy business with Shigure with Ren to get back at Akito for with Kureno, AND THEN ALL THIS SOMEHOW ENDED WITH SHIGURE AND AKITO TOGETHER.
I've given the series a solid 4 so far, but this volume took me so by surprise I had to give it 5 stars. What else can this author possibly shock me with!?["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Alright, this is becoming a soap opera. Akito is a dick regardless of gender, so attempting to play the sympathy card doesn't work. Being abused doesn't make it okay to turn around and abuse others.
This whole nonsense with Arisa and Kureno is ridiculous. YOU MET TWICE. I just can't take a multi-volume arc about forbidden romance seriously when y'all MET TWICE. You have to at least know each other's last name before I deal with your bullshit.
I'm giving this 5 stars because the artwork is simply beautiful, and this is still a story involving some of my favorite characters of all, even if this particular volume didn't focus on them as much as I might have wished, and it is one of my least favorite in the series. This series as a whole is a five-star experience for me, so it makes sense in my book.

There isn’t much to say about Kureno Sohma other than being one of the ‘cursed’ from the household. He proves to be quite the charmer in spite of his laidback demeanor, thanks to a fate brought to him one day at a convenience store.
This is where he’s swooned the heart of no other than Uotani Arisa. Besides that, he remains the diligent servant he’s taught to be, never leaving Akito’s side like his life depended on it.
Personally, I don’t see any chemistry behind those two. Instead, I’m given an impression that their ‘love’ is merely placed out there for the sake of romance.
The story of how they met was completely cliché and it made no relevance to the main plot other than for a different issue for readers to dwell on. Hanajima’s sudden love interest for Shisho even sounded more bearable than Arisa’s, if you think about it.
I pity and dislike Kureno for who he is. Instead of letting himself be free, Kureno went to continue living by serving others. It’s how he ends up being Akito’s trusted servant to abide by his rules. As we all know by now, Akito has his ways to have everything go as he pleases.
But readers will soon find out the reasons behind why it came out this way. Because of this, I no longer wonder why a lot of angst and frustration are being thrown to the other cursed ones even though they have nothing to do with it.
Thinking about their situation made me realize how unfair it is to others that they have live on by this state indefinitely. They’ve grown hopeless, thinking nothing can change their roles for the family until Tohru came along. I wonder how she plans to pull this off when the opportunity arises.
As always, what’s a story without its plot twist?
The biggest reveal for this volume is a total surprise to me, even I can’t make sense of it too soon. I’d need a moment to let everything sink in before I can proceed to the next one.
All the secrets coming to light, ahh. KURENOOO. And Hana and Arisa. Ugh.
Also, all the soft moments with Kyo/Tohru, Yuki/Machi, and even Shigure. THE SCARF. THE FLOWER. THE HELLOS. UGH. These should not make me feel so much.
Giving this a 4-star, mainly because enjoyment-wise, this volume wasn't something I enjoyed all that much compared to the previous volumes despite all the secrets dropped on us.
Wow, Kureno. Can I give him a title like "The Person Who Shall Reveal Secrets"? Seriously, this volume's biggest plot twists came from him. I remember the first time I read this and I was like "HOLY SHIT THAT DID NOT HAPPEN!... *a few pages down* OMG THAT DID NOT HAPPEN!... *a few pages later* DAMN IT KURENO HOW MANY PLOT TWISTS ARE THERE?!"
Wow. Let me pause and let that sink in. *breathes deeply*
It's no wonder Tohru reacts the way she did after learning about everything... And then we readers get to know things from Shigure's side (!!!) that Tohru doesn't know (yet?). And WTF Shigure, did you ??? This is so messed up, like he points out himself. And yet at the end of the volume
Veering away from the Sohma family drama, I love the scene between Tohru, Arisa and Saki. (Does anyone wonder why they call Tohru Tohru, but Tohru calls them by their family names...? So polite, our protagonist.) That is one of my favorite points of this series: that there's many friendships forged. Me love some sisterhood! (Although, poor Uo-chan. *pats* He'll come around, someday.)
That scene of Kyo and Tohru just unleashed my inner fangirl. (KYA! KYA! KYAAAAAA!!!!) Kyo, it's SOOOOO obvious you lurve her. Fortunately (or unfortunately?) Tohru's too dense to realize it. That flower scene is just so sweet I feel like I just poured sugar into my mouth, but it's definitely worth it. *goes to fangirl*
We also see a development in Yuki and Machi's relationship, and what seems like a budding romance between. A girl running after you just to say hi, when she doesn't seem all that impressed by you just a few volumes ago? Cute. I like how they're slowly discovering each other, seeing each other beyond the facades that they portray consciously or unconsciously to others. Too bad I'm not really all that invested into that relationship. Takaya needs to show more from Machi to really make us readers root for her.
All in all, not a bad volume. Not one of my favorites by far, but the huge plot twists and the cute Kyo-Tohru scene make this worth it.
Kureno watches the video of Sorta Cinderella and calls Tohru. She is not home but Shigure agrees to arrange a meeting, then asks Kureno if he has been released from the curse. When Tohru meets Kureno, she realizes that birds fly away from him, and he admits, while embracing her, that he has not been the rooster since his mid-teens, though he does not know why the curse was broken for him. Kureno again declines to see Uotani, even though he wants to, because when Akito was distressed at his curse's lifting, he promised "that sad little girl" he would never leave. He reveals what only the four oldest zodiac members know: that Akito was born female, but raised male on the orders of her mother, Ren Sohma. Hanajima senses Tohru's distress at these revelations and takes her home overnight, where Tohru tells Uotani only that Kureno is promised to another woman. Tohru recovers but remains confused, not knowing whom she can talk to about what she knows, and when she asks Kyo about hypothetically breaking the curse, he derides it as a vain hope. While having a business dinner with his editor, Shigure sees Akito but does not greet her. The rest of Shigure and Kureno's telephone conversation is shown in flashback, in which they mutually reproach each other over Akito. When Shigure visits Akito later that night, Shigure repeats his long-ago promise to never leave Akito, and admits he once had sex with Ren in retaliation for Akito's sleeping with Kureno, and the argument ends with them sleeping together.

Plot twists! Gah! What is happening?!? This is insane. I never saw it coming. I have to rearrange all my thinking now. I have to revisit every scene, every character, all the things I thought I knew. The whole story just got turned upside down!
Kureno Sohma confronts Tohru about her efforts to bring him and Uotani together, and he reveals a massive Sohma family secret! Hanajima hears Tohru crying through her electric vibrations and arranges a sleep over so that she and Uotani can cheer Tohru up. Those three are such wonderful friends!
The gang are all making paper flowers to decorate the school for the graduation ceremony, but the crazy fan club girls steal all of the flowers Yuki made! So the gang has to decide whether to confront the thieves and get back their stolen flowers or just buckle down and make new ones.
Shigure has a heated conversation with Akito in which some of their history is revealed, and new questions arise. What is Shigure really up to?!?
Some excellent explanation into why Akito is the way he is--it was nice to get a better idea of his character, since up until now he's really just been this menacing force in the series with no real idea of why he's like that. As always, some great character development while they interact with each other, good stuff.
