Mountain Masters & Dark Haven #2.5

Master of the Dark Side

Rate this book
Real Doms terrify her, so Summer plays with lightweights only. And only in the safety of her club, Dark Haven. But on Western Night, the tough cop who wins her in a sub-roping game is as powerful as they come.

Virgil's first taste of BDSM was disturbingly enticing. Hoping to burn out his interest, he visits an infamous San Francisco club, where he wins himself the prettiest little submissive he's ever seen. He's in a quandary. A man shouldn't render a woman helpless, let alone spank her ass. But the nervous little submissive clearly loves being in his ropes. Her need to be controlled is as powerful as his need to control. So he indulges himself, and her.

That one night could be the beginning, but instead it's the end. She won't play outside the club and he lives too far to visit often. He'll just have to find a way to forget her...or get her in his ropes to stay.

A New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, she’s renowned for writing heart-wrenching romances with laugh-out-loud dialogue, alpha males, and absolutely sizzling sex.

I met my dearheart when vacationing in the Caribbean. Now I won’t say it was love at first sight. Actually since he stood over me, enjoying the view down my swimsuit top, I might have been a tad peeved—as well as attracted. But although we were together less than two days and lived on opposite sides of the country, love can’t be corralled by time or space.

We’ve now been married for many, many years. (And he still looks down my swimsuit tops.)

Nowadays, I live in the west with this obnoxious, beloved husband and a seventy-pound lap-puppy. I’m a gardener, and I love nurturing small plants until they’re big and healthy and productive…and ripping defenseless weeds out by the roots when I’m angry. I enjoy thunderstorms, collecting eggs from the chickens, and visiting the local brewery for the darkest, maltiest beer on tap. My favorite way to spend an evening is curled up on a couch next to the master of my heart, watching the fire, reading, and…well…if you’re reading my books, you obviously know what else happens in front of fires.

Still a good book. Virgil is still a standout with his confidence and yet also apprehension about hurting a woman.

4 ⭐️

Oh I think Virgil is now my favourite. I really liked that he was unsure of being a Dom and really struggled with hurting Summer even if she wanted it. I liked the way he really focused on communication and watched Summer to understand her needs and wants, and although he was trying to work out what he wanted he never came across as unsure. It was good to see them both work through their issues.

Master of the Dark Side
Virgil Masterson and Summer Aragon
4.5/5 Stars

Master of the Dark Side is the second novella of the Mountain Masters & Dark Haven series by Cherise Sinclair.

Favorite Quotes
“But… your reputation.” -Summer
“Will have to take care of itself… We’ve got more between us than a night of screwing around, so I guess I can handle being called a pervert, if need be. You know, even after this long, I still wake up thinking of you and go to sleep thinking of you.” -Virgil

As she leaned against his shoulder,

he knew he’d be happy

just sitting with her… forever.

“I learned a harsh lesson this year—that I should never assume someone knows how I feel… You’ll never have to guess what I feel for you. I love you, Summer.” -Virgil

…He’d have tried to make her happy

even if she left him.

How could her heart keep expanding

without bursting?

Reading this one today, I would've given it 3 stars, however, I don't change my ratings during a reread. This one just didn't have enough time to set everything up. Which is sad because I really like Virgil.

I'm not sure I really understood the inner dialogue with Virgil. I get he's a police officer, but this whole 'this is wrong', 'you can't hit a woman', and all the other things he dragged on about in his mind. There was no real reason for this other than he slapped a girl when he was 4 years old. 4 YEARS OLD!!! ugh.

Then you have Summer who is still hung up on all the things that happened during Simon's book. Don't get me wrong, I get it, but this book is just over 100 pages. Why does the whole book have to still deal with this?? Why couldn't she have worked through all of this in the 1 - 1 1/2 years since. It was just frustrating.

Either way, I clearly liked it more the first time around, lol

Just once I'd like to see a woman try anal andnthen say "Nope...it doesn't do it for me plus it HURTS." In this one regard, anal, it seems almost ALL BDSM writers seems to say "try it, you'll LOVE it." That's just not realistic! I get a sub trying anal for her dom, but just once it would be nice for a sub to say, "Okay, I tried it and I didn't like it."

This is a love at first... play/domination?... sight erotic romance, like the other Cherise Sinclair that I have read. It is really well done as he really follows the negociation and rules. She is not way out there so it is not too uncomfortable. I think I take the star just because it is just not my thing. Play and kink, spanking, bondage, sure but the yes sir/ master thing, just does something wrong in my mind. Just like he is thinking he is sick, I'm thinking she has got a bit of that too. Still it doesn't go very far and is sexy. They bond in some first sight/tie up and submission play. Yet, she doesn't give in to leaving with him for privacy. She has trust issues with good reason. So they meet again a bit later when she is ready to move on from her past but it isn't as easy as she thought. This is moving on from her past sexual relationship and we don't really find out much about other than she is a pretty good nurse and he is a well respected cop with family. They don't even know each other but the sex leads the love, like a good erotica should do. Definitely erotica first. DS with paddling and some BD, and only a past retelling of SM.

Another novella by Cherise Sinclair that I enjoyed and wished had been longer, although their definitely would have needed to have been more of a plot line in order to have made it into a full length novel, however, it worked perfectly as a novella. I liked Virgil, he's definitely one of the sweetest mom's I've read in a while and it was nice to have a hero who didn't hide his teddy bear side. :-) Summer was also a very relatable character and, after her experience, her fears and issues were very understandable and well worked through. On the other hand, Virgil is new to the BDSM scene and I felt like his idea that being a dom is the same as being a pervert needed a little more working through...

All in all though, a good edition to the series and Sinclair didn't disappoint!

Back to the mountains we go, this time for Virgil's story. We briefly met Summer in a previous story, and Virgil through Kallie's, and these two are just sweet as can be.

Another success
The author gives us another book with just the right amount of hot scenes, laughter and sweetness. After a bad experience with a Dom Summer is holding back and play only with light Doms. Until Virgil shows up, and the sparks lights. The storyline is good as always and the characters is well described.
I'm floating in to the book and I love it.

Excellent novella with a story of novel expectations!

For a novella, this book blew me away.

I liked this book far better than Book #3 which I see is just an intro for this "novella" alone. It's not often I consider a novella was incorrectly labeled when the title of "novel" would had been more appropriate. Sure, Book #3 had romance, the chase, the heartache, but this novella had soul and intimacy which launched it a few stories higher than its predecessor by a long shot! If given a chance to reread Books #1-4, I'd be rereading this one first without a question.

I loved how she created Virgil and Summer. It's was so cool to see a submissive female character already into the BDSM scene (but with issues) and the dom was new. Hahaha!! But just because Virgil was relatively new to the "scene", he definitely was born to be a dom and a very, very good one, too. (One, I feel, could run his own BDSM paradise out on a private island in the South Pacific. Wouldn't that make a great series?) I could easily visualize both Virgil and Summer, know their inner and outer strengths and weaknesses. I would be so comfortable being in their actual presence if they were real people. And I would love for them to be neighbors! (As long as I had access to the Lodge nearby, that is...)

World-building continued, and I appreciated the characters from previous books interacting with those featured here. I saw less editing problems, but they were still the same things — lack of thorough read-throughs to prevent using properly spelled but the wrong words, some of them being simple homonyms! Good grief! These are simple ones an editor worth his/her weight in books should had caught.

What I did appreciate was the wonderful use of soul and intimacy. These are the hardest to write about because neither are simple or easy. And sex and romance aren't the same thing. If I had been Summer, I would have moved in with Virgil immediately, hoping that our screams and yelling during sex would drive out Virgil's other brothers into finding their own places so that I could have the monster log cabin mansion all to myself!

Virgil Masterson is Kallie Masterson's cousin and he is a cop. He gets a taste of the BDSM life through his brother in law Jake and Jake's brother Luke. He can't quite come to grips with that fact that hitting woman can be a good thing especially if the woman wants it. He thinks he is a freak and goes to Dark Haven to find out. He is a good man who likes his dominance but has trouble grappling with it as well.

Summer had a bad experience with a Dom at Dark Haven and now she pays it safe with a few Dom's who she considers friends. But Simon and Xavier have other plans for her as Xavier think she is just playing at submitting. She will play with anyone outside of the club because of what happened to her with one bad Dom.

Summer is lassoed by Virgil in a contest at the club and he is instantly fascinated by her. Slowly he drives her wild and they spend a few days together but Summer won't play outside of the club and Virgil needs to go home. Summer wants him but can she trust again?

These two characters are so right for each other that it oozes off the page. Summer is sweet if not sassy and she can handle herself but her confidence is shaken. Virgil knows what he is but needs to comes to grips with it, the cop side vs. the dom side. The struggle is real and the story is a page turner.

Virgil & Summer. I enjoyed this. Virgil wasn't the super intimidating dom that we're used to. He used a lot of "please" and "thank you"s when dominating Summer. "Take off your clothes, please". I get it that he is new to the BDSM scene. That being said, it didn't make him any less hot.

We met Summer in "Simon Says, Mine" (book 1.5). She was the sub that was at Simon's party that was ball gagged and yelling her safe word but the dom she was with was a sadist and wanted to hurt her. Rona ended up saving her but the whole incident made her weary of strong doms and also doing scenes outside of the Dark Haven club.

They were instantly a good match dom/sub but each had their things that was holding them back. Summer's trust issues being larger than Virgil's shame for wanting to be a dom. He's a cop and raised to respect women and never hit a woman. Just a gentleman. If he weren't so hot he would fall in the "nice guys finish last" category. Oh and there was the physical distance thing. She was in San Fran and he was in the mountains...a day's trip.

Summer realized she was missing something in life and decides to uproot and life change. She gets a new job further away from Virgil which would make distance an even larger issue. But feelings win out and neither could deny that they loved each other. So she got a job with the town doc as his nurse and they get together.

Well, well, well. Color me impressed.
I admit that I was bit skeptical about continuing the series after finishing "Master of the Abyss". But Virgil and Summer made me want to continue, and now I'm hooked. I loved our main leads' relationship and I liked them individually. I liked seeing Virgil fall into the lifestyle and falling for Summer. I saw some character development when it came to Virgil that has shown he has changed for the better since the last book. The only reason why I couldn't convince myself to give it 5 stars is because there just wasn't that much of it so it felt at times a bit surface level; the drama ended quickly, it was also predictable, since the tone of the book was a bit somber(ish), what with Summer learning to trust again after that asshole hurt her, it is understandable. That said, what attracted me to CS's books were primarily the interesting characters and the humor. In this story we get interesting characters, but the humor is almost nonexistent.
The series seems to be a bit of hit and miss so far, but I'm enjoying the ride. Peace out✌

Sinclair, Cherise (2012).
Master of the Dark Side (Mountain Masters & Dark Haven. 4).

VanScoy Publishing Group / eBook 2015

ISBN 978-0-9861195-1-4

After reading and loving Cherise Sinclair’s “Masters of the Shadowlands” series, I was a bit hesitant to continue with these books since I’m not a special fan of the mountain man genre… But by chance I started with this novella which according to Ms Sinclair’s website is #4. It starts at a Western Night at the San Francisco BDSM club Dark Haven.

One of the visitors, Virgil Masterson, needn’t dress up as this is his usual outfit when he’s not wearing his cop uniform. Virgil is not the classic Dom since he’s still searching for his own position and self in the lifestyle. However, over the course of the text he definitely destroyed my mountain-man-prejudice…
Summer Aragon is the female main character, a nurse in her mid-twenties who a year ago experienced a violent assault attack during a private BDSM party.

They had only one night at the club, and one weekend to work on their insecurities/trauma, to find their way and find each other.

I will definitely go back to read the previous installments plus the rest of the series.

Virgil is a soft hearted, respected and respectful, virile, gorgeous and Dominant. Yet he has troule reconciling his Dominant or pervert side as he calls it with his upbringing and law enforcement background. He's suppoed to arrest men who hit women not get off on paddling a woman himself. Summer is playing at her submission after being severely abused by a so called Dom (read about it in Simon Says: Mine - Mountain Masters Bk 2) since then she's only played with light weight Doms and only at Dark Haven. After meeting and sharing a night of erotic decadence, the two go their separate ways but can't seem to let go of their night together. They come together at Serenity Lodge for a Hunt's BDSM play party and reconnect passionately. Feelings are expressed but their situation seems hopeless as Summer is moving to Oregon to take a new job. Can they figure out an HEA?

This is a poignantly sweet love story. No great conflucts, mystery or intrigue. Just two people who click and now have to figure out what to do about it. Another great book by Cherise Sinclair.

Not a Dom yet!

I have been reading Cherise Sinclair's books for about a month now..... hot, hot, hot. But also good storyline I believe woman need a good story a-long with good sex. This is the 4th book in the mountain men set. I really enjoyed that Virgil is not a experienced dom. It gave the book a more realistic tone. Yet he's a natural, naturally!! I also appreciate the warning from the author about real life play, control , be safe, talk it out... be careful.
I e.njoy all of the couples in the series so far, but since I was introduced by Rebecca and Logan their story rocked my world!! I am so delighted whenever they pop up in subsequent books.
If you are reading these books, to help you get your rocks off. I suggest reading one, then reading another genre, then back to this good author. If you are reading for great stories well enjoy one after the other. I read a lot and read this novella in a couple of hours! Thanks to Cherise for the series. I am sure I will be reading more of her talented writing.

Master of the Dark Side: Book 4

Summer is scared after being hurt badly by a wannabe Dom, and Virgil is scared that he's going to enjoy BDSM & be seen as a perv. He's afraid people will find out & put his job in trouble.. But I think its the playing in public he don't like cause he's such a private person. I love the way he shows her he will not abuse her trust in him. I loved the ending.. I can't wait to see what happens next in the story.. I'm very sad we didn't get to see Kallie & Jake get married in the storyline... I'm not sure I'm gonna like that they ate going to stop all the kink at the cabins!!! Really??? Where is all the kinky sex gonna happen in Bear Flatt's?? I'm stunned.. Bring on the next book!! I recommend this whole series & all the other series that the Author writes as I love them all.. <3

Virgil and Callie (M/F) bdsm D/S

A strong but recently hurt/scared Callie was playing it safe for quite some time. In walks Virgil, newly entering bdsm trying to figure out whether or not he's a Dom. When the 2 collide in hot & sexy play at the club, wow, this reader can't turn the pages fast enough. Their connection seems uncanny. Later we see it's real. Virgil is the consummate protector and is all about control. What further makes him so endearing is how he is always watching & interpreting Callie for her fear and adjusting himself, to a degree ;) And how straight forward he speaks. This ending filled my heart with tears in my eyes... followed by a chuckle. Gah, I just love Cherise Sinclair books ♡

Love this author

I was leery when I started reading this series. I was afraid it would scare me. lol. But was caught up in the stray right away. First thing I got angry at the Dom. Second. I stayed angry with the Dom. Third. I am not either a Dom nor a sub. I was controlled by my parents she n young. Then by 2 husbands. Old fashioned I was raised. Husband head of household. Wife did home and children. Well I learned to stand on my own two feet and not to need rd a man in my life. I'm as happy as I can be. I'm also 69 years old. But Ii enjoy reading Cherise Sinclairrs book. Even when I get mad at the men. I Wil say. More please and Thank you

This book is about Summer who we met in the first Doms of Dark Haven. She was the one that was being abused by her dom and Simon, Rona and Jake saved her.. Virgil we met in Master of the Abyss. He is Callie's cousin and a cop.. Her abuse by her last dom has left her emotionally scared.. Virgil is a reluctant dom. These two together were perfect. Cherise always does a great job with the emotional aspects and with this book both Summer and Virgil had issues they needed to work though. It was both heartfelt and humorous.

Life renewed

After having a bad experience with a Dom, Summer has been playing it safe with BDSM. But she has a loneliness inside her that longs for a Dom who will overwhelm her senses and make her feel safe.

Virgil wanted to find out why his cousin enjoyed BDSM and he did. Not only did her understand the appeal he figured out he needed to be dominant to fulfill his own sexual needs. But being a cop it goes against everything he believes, until he meets Summer. Now he knows what he wants and with who.

I think it was interesting to see someone who isn't even sure about his interest in BDSM have such a natural way with it. Also, to see someone who had some very real fears relax with this unknown Dom. It is reminder that books are fiction and in this fictional world sometimes the chemistry just clicks and two people seem fated for each other. That doesn't take away from the enjoyment of the story. I loved rooting for this couple. I love Summer feisty side and her strength when taking on the good doctor.
