Black Clover vol. 1 is a promising start of a new fantasy adventure boy's manga series!

I admit the story has pretty much your typical boy's manga setting:

In a world (based mostly on the 18th or 19th century Europe) where everyone possesses magical talents to different degrees and the strongest mages are given knighthood to defend their kingdom, two orphaned boys from the outskirt village vow to join the rank of knights and eventually become the legendary Magic King.

The orphaned boys are friends--the MC is the short, blond-haired and energetic/hyper active/sunny type, and his best friend is the taller, dark haired, thoughtful and silent type, both of them have gone to magical training with different mages/knights to develop their potential, although it turns out , many challenges awaited them.

The setting is nothing new, but I adore the fine artwork and the story is exercised in a fast-paced, humorous way, the outstanding supporting characters--especially the group of 'the most violent and unlawful knights in the kingdom', the members are so well designed and they are so much fun---add color to the story and the MC's adventures are always engaging so far, I can't wait for the next volume!

I know a lot of other reviews made fun of this little bit but I’m going to do so as well. One of the characters is Marilyn Manson! Seriously, how do you look at this guy and not hear the guitar riff from The Beautiful People playing?
description

What’s it about?
There’s this boy named Asta, he lives in a world where everybody does magic stuff and wants to become the next wizard king! The problem is that he has a lack of magical abilities but he may still have hope.

Pros:
The story is pretty interesting.
I like the art, of course I always have a soft spot for manga art, I don’t remember reading a manga I didn’t like the art in so I might just really like that art style.
The characters are pretty interesting and/or entertaining.
There are some fantastic action scenes throughout this book. This book never fails to be exciting!
Asta’s sword is pretty bad-a**! It reminds me of the sword Guts from Berserk carries!
description
description
(Top: Asta and his sword. Bottom: Guts and his sword)

Cons:
This book is SO predictable. Let me put it this way: have you read any shonen manga? You know how this book goes, it is a pile of shonen stereotypes packed into one book.
This book tries to be funny but it isn’t. There are a few chuckle worthy moments but most of it just tries too hard and/or comes across as immature.
There’s a minor subplot with a nun that Asta likes but it annoys me for multiple reasons despite being a minor subplot. First of all, the nun practices witchcraft and so do a bunch of people at a church… yeah, unless I missed something it seemed like a catholic church… now, I’m not catholic so there might be something I missed but aren’t catholics meant to be against witchcraft? Just sayin’. Second, the nun is much older than Asta, like it's a big enough age difference that it's creepy IMO. Another thing is that the nun can’t get married or be in a relationship but Asta won’t give up. I understand being into a girl that isn’t interested and how that can be annoying but if she’s not interested GIVE UP! Especially when other pretty girls are expressing interest in you.

Overall:
This book is entertaining but it’s very flawed and I’m honestly not sure if I’d recommend it to anybody. Yes, there’s awesome action but there’s a lot of other manga that is better and full of action. This has that nearly hopeless character rising up despite not having special powers when pretty much everyone else does- oh wait, so does My Hero Academia. But there’s that big huge sword that’s freaking awesome- wait, it looks almost exactly like the sword from Berserk. Yeah, okay, it’s alright but I definitely recommend some other manga stories a lot more.

Strap in, folks, this is gonna be a long-ass rant/ review.

I was incredibly skeptical about starting this series. Despite being a huge Shounen Jump Fangirl, when the anime adaptation came out any motivation to read this was demolished. Why? Because, according to multiple anime fans and reviewers, the anime butchered the series. So, with that knowledge, I moved on. And yet, anime fans were still encouraging others to give it a try; hell, even some of the anime reviewers who maligned the show admitted that the manga was pretty good. Thus, while waiting on my pre-orders, I decided to give this a shot. And I do not regret it, folks.

In lieu of a traditional review, I want to address the issues Black Clover critics have regarding the series and discuss why I take issue with them. I'll try to make this as coherent as possible, but I make no promises.

First and foremost, the biggest complaint that I see leveled at this series is that it's "unoriginal". Okay, here's the deal with originality: IT DOESN'T FUCKING EXIST ANYMORE. Folks, it is 20-fucking-20, the originality river has been sucked dry for decades now. It is damn near impossible for any creator to come up with a wholly original piece of work because they will inevitably be inspired by something they've seen. Now, before any critics shout, "we don't mean it has to be TOTALLY original, but it's too much like other action series!" Um, okay, how is that inherently bad? Anything, original or not, can be entertaining as long as the creator puts in the effort to make it so. If you don't like it, that's fine, we don't all have to like the same things, but if you're only argument as to why you don't is because it's unoriginal than that's on you and your standards.

The second biggest complaint is that it "borrows too much from previous shounen/ Shounen Jump titles". The two that are compared to Black Clover the most are Fairy Tale and Naruto. And while I concede that they're similarities between the two, this is such a fucking petty complaint. If you really think about it, A LOT of Shounen Jump titles follow a similar formula in one way or another in the beginning, but grow into their own later on. Here are two common examples that make my head explode with frustration:

1. Naruto and Black Clover both have an arc in the beginning were what was supposed to be a simple mission turns into a dangerous one. And somehow this implies that Black Clover ripped off of Naruto. Fun fact folks, YU YU HAKUSHO LITERALLY DID THE EXACT SAME THING THREE DECADES AGO. Also, while it's not technically a "mission," My Hero Academia's first major arc does something INCREDIBLY SIMILAR. And finally, JUJUTSU KAISEN'S FIRST GROUP MISSION WAS THE SAME THING AND NO ONE COMPLAINS ABOUT THAT. If you guys are going to criticize a work for doing something similarly to another work, please be sure that this isn't something common in MOST Shounen Jump titles.

2. Fairy Tale and Black Clover both have guilds that are filled with a cast of quirky characters. You know what else has a quirky cast of characters? LITERALLY EVERY SHOUNEN JUMP SERIES EVER.

Finally, the last major criticism lodged at the series is the main character himself, Asta. Now, is Asta the best Shounen Jump MC ever? No. Is he bad, though? Absolutely not.

I think the biggest issue with how people perceive Asta is admittedly my least favorite part of this volume, the first chapter. I've read a shit ton of manga in my 29 years, but this is easily one of the worst introductory chapters in terms of trying to endear the audience to Asta. In this first chapter, he is obnoxiously annoying, can't seem to express himself without shouting, and is just generally an uninteresting character. It isn't until the big confrontation with Revchi that Asta actually becomes a likable, endearing character, but that isn't until the last part of the chapter. Then once that chapter's over, he's honestly a pretty fun and funny character to me. I LOVE his interactions with Magna and his interactions with Noelle paint him as a super supportive and caring person. I seriously have no idea why Tabata wrote him the way he did in the first chapter, but I don't think he's a bad or poorly written character.

As for more miscellaneous thoughts, while I don't love every member of the Black Bulls (except Yami, Magna, and Noelle, they're the fucking best) I'm at least curious to learn more about them and like them well enough (except Gauche, he annoys the shit out of me). I LOVE the artwork/ art style and the fight scenes look super dope. The magic system seems interesting and I can't wait to see how each character's magic grows throughout the story.

Okay, final thoughts. If you're on the fence about starting this series because of the criticisms lodged against it, the best advice I can give is this: if you're looking for a fun, fast paced action romp, give this a shot. If you want something that's trying new things or pushing the boundaries of what Shounen Jump can offer, maybe pass on this. As for me, I went into this with low expectations but genuinely had fun reading it and am looking forward to reading more.

Even if I can´t join the magic knights today...no matter how many times I fall...no matter what anyone says...one day I will become the wizard king!

Following the main character Asta determination to become the wizard king even though he has no magic Power at all is sutch a fun ride in this adventure manga. I love the story and characters so mutch and I cant wait to read more about them. Asta is my ambition to keep staying positive no mather what gets thrown in your face and this story has so mutch humor in it even though it seams there is alot of dark themes hidden underneth the Surface.

Check out more manga and graphic novel reviews @ Perspective of a Writer...

This is a review of volumes 1-2 which I read together back to back. See the plot section for my thoughts on the individual volumes.

Asta and Yuno grew up together, abandoned at the same church. They both determined to become Magic Knights... Yuno's abilities soon grew to genius levels of power and control while Asta didn't show even a spark of magic and made up for it by training hard physically. It became apparent to both when they received their grimores, Yuno a coveted 4-leaf clover and Asta an unheard of black 5-leaf clover, that they were each other's biggest competition when it came to achieving their goals of becoming the next sorcerer emperor.

I was quite taken by the magical world that Black Clover is set in... it's very European with castles and knights and rivaling countries, but its best quality is the magical grimores! While I haven't been saturated in shonen manga, lets be real here... even I can see this is chock full of shonen stereotypes. I don't consider that a bad thing. Sure there are stories that are something totally new, a twist so epic that its origins aren't readily apparent. Then there are the stories that takes elements we know and love and twists them enough that while familiar is still really good stuff! That is Black Clover!

For me, I love the grimores so, of course, I LOVE Asta! He's the one with a totally unique grimore, an upbeat attitude I enjoy and persistence like you wouldn't believe! In fact, after pondering why I enjoyed these volumes so much I realized its because he reminded me of what I like best about Naruto... Except that I really love his relationship with Yuno! Yuno is clearly superior but he's a whole lot less of an ass about it than Naruto's rival. To me this is a great sign! We already have improvements on tropes that were pulled together for this story! It adds this delicious tension that was never present in Naruto...

And we get right into the action. I only watched Naruto so I don't know how Black Clover compares volume for volume but Asta and Yuno obtain their grimores swiftly in volume 1 without glossing over events and we get onto meeting a cross section of Asta's team! Pretty tight. We even get the beginnings of Asta's first mission! In volume 2 we see Asta learning while getting blooded and then move along to some rivalry with Yuno and his elite team. We also learn of a rivaling country and their magic team! BOOM! We get right into the story. I admit its all made more fun due to Asta being the primary POV.

And ALL THE CHARACTERS! We have two full knight teams for Asta and Yuno, plus 7 other squads and then the current sorcerer emperor! And that isn't even talking about the antagonists that aren't a part of the squads! And the character designs are so distinct!! That is a major plus for me in the art department. This is that wonderfully striking and modern art that is an update on what made manga popular in the first place. The battles are shown off to great effect and the expressions are sharp and telling. Really its a cap on the fun magic in Black Clover.

Black Clover vol 1 is a great start to a new series! The action only gets better in Black Clover vol 2 and I can't wait to see what Asta does next and how his anti-magic and his physical conditioning create the right environment for this passionate kid to excel!

⋆ ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Plot
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art

I went into this, thinking it would probably be like Soul Eater. It's not really, but I still quite enjoy it.

Asta is a really fun and relatable character that has no magic in a land where magic is everything. His goal in life is to become the Wizard King - a goal that everyone thinks he will never accomplish. He may not have full-on magic like everyone else, but he makes up for it in heart, strength, and the fact that he never gives up on anyone.

On the other hand, Asta's best friend - Yuno - is very skilled at magic. Still, Asta has had to help Yuno out of bad situations quite a few times. Yuno views Asta as a worthy rival, and vows to beat him however possible. He also wants to become the Wizard King.

Both are accepted to be Magic Knights - on different teams - and set off on separate paths towards the same goal.

At best this series is extremely cliche.

Magical powers, becoming Hokag--King Wizard. Loud annoying main character who in real life would probably be nothing but annoying but is actually one of the strongest. You know, you read it before, and the author seems to have no shame of copying older Mangas. And sometimes feeling like older mangas works in their favor, for both Jujutsu and Demon Slayer have vibes of previous series but quickly make their own imprint.

Saying that, this series isn't "horrible" or "bad" it's just decent. It has moments that are cute and funny, and the fact the main character teams up with a rag tag group of losers who are all pretty interesting (Though did we really need a half naked chick so soon?) But the pacing is quick and for a battle manga the visuals work.

I'll probably read a few more volumes and decide to keep or drop but it's enjoyable to read on my Shonen Jump App. A 3 out of 5.

what the heck is wrong with this manga? -_-
it's not only a TYPICAL shounin manga with absolutely nothing new but also the characters are so shallow ,not well developed at all. it feels so unoriginal
maybe the author is a fan of naruto/bleach/fairy tail -maybe more- so he just decided to make something in the same style and didn't do so well .
I read the available 129 chapters :\
the star is just for being magic-related story

It improves as it goes along, but this one is really choking on shonen cliches. Feels like it was created by committee, throwing together elements from other series to create something that's marketable. You really have to be in the mood for shonen for this one.

This volume was really good! It introduces us to this guy named Asta and he has no magic powers yet dreams of becoming the Wizard King and this volume is an introduction as we have the Grimoire choosing ceremony, the magic knights initiation and the insanity there and him joining the Black Bulls and getting to know other members especially Noelle and their first mission in some Boonies where its been sieged by villains! Its upto Asta to save them! This was a great intro and is fast paced and the art is freaking gorgeous!

The story begins with a boy trying to seduce a nun really forcefully. Right off the bat we get pedophilic antichristian deviance. Said boy begins as someone with no superpowers in a world where everyone can use magic. Unlike My Hero Academia which begins in a similar way, Asta is doing nothing to gain the reader’s sympathy. He is an obnoxious loudmouth with no redeeming qualities. He had the chance to stand out by training in martial arts instead of relying on magic, but nah, he still relies on magic to have his way.

So, he goes to a school, as if we didn’t have enough of those already, where he fails the exams because, duh, he can’t use magic. If you think he will just face the truth and deal with life not being fair, out of nowhere he is given a magic book with a sword that cancels magic. Yeah, it’s another one of those stories that give the ultimate power to losers just for the sake of bottom tier empowerment fantasy. The writer goes as far as making the bad guys to behave as one-dimensionally evil as possible, just for making the obnoxious protagonist to seem better in comparison. Yes, they make the bad guys so cartoonish, even a nun rapist seems heroic before them.

Asta has a rival, like all shonen do, only this one gives no reason for the rivalry to exist. Yuno grew up with Asta as if they were brothers. They are so friendly with each other, you see no rivalry. Furthermore, a typical shonen rival is always far more talented and stronger than the shonen protagonist. Yuno, despite being gifted with a lot of magic, had to be saved twice by Asta in two chapters. He instantly fails to be a hard obstacle for the hero to overcome.

The plot is as generic as it gets. Naruto wants to take part in the Hunter Exam, so he can be chosen by a Shinigami Captain to enter the Fairy Tail Guild, so he can become the Pirate King. I’ve seen this crap a hundred times and I got sick of it. It doesn’t help me care when Asta is picked up by the Bulls, just because of his attitude instead of his complete lack of talent. It’s like hiring the guy who directed and played in The Room just because he has guts.

Anyways, Asta goes to the guild where we are introduced to the support characters, and my god, are they annoying. They all have one-trait personalities and are defined by one gag, which they repeat as often as they can to the point you want to throw away the manga. They are supposed to be more fleshed out once they join Asta in his various missions later on, but there is very little to care about them when you constantly see them pulling new powers out of their ass, just because they suffer from the typical protection syndrome of shonen manga. The battles lose their impact because of magic convenience that always triggers when their nakama are in danger. It’s all too predictable and not much thought was placed behind the battle choreography, leaving you uninterested for what is to come.

Black Clover reads like a bit. Like a gag in a parody manga. If you were to imagine you're reading another manga, and that manga has to make a reference to a shonen battle manga but doesn't want to name any specific manga, they would probably invent Black Clover. Every part of this series feels like it's slowly ticking off boxes on a check list of what a shonen battle manga needs, without going above and beyond that. Sure, the art is decent and has some cool action shots, but there's still nothing unique about what it chooses to show. Even the narration leads like a deadpan gag making fun of shonen battle manga, but Black Clover plays it serious. Reading this series feels like a half-remember dream with every chapter making me go "have I already read this before and forgotten it, or is it just that played out and generic?"

I kinda read this entire manga (all current volumes) But I feel like it would really clutter my profile so I'm just gonna review the whole thing right here and i'll do it in terms of arcs because I feel like I'd be easier to understand.

so for starters this manga is the popcorn of shounen jump.it's literally everything you love about the genre jumbled together with varying degrees of success.the plot is simple and understandable and the pacing is really fast making it a page turner.I feel that it's the most accessible "classic" shounen manga in JUMP right now because one piece is waaaaay too long for new and young audience and the rest of the big three are already done and over.and I'm saying "classic" because I'm not forgetting BNHA but that is a whole diffrent thing I'm not willing to talk about here😂

There are currently 9 arcs in the manga with the strongest being the first 4 arcs and the 8th arc being the closest thing this manga has to a tournenmt arc.

Now for these 4 arcs (the beginning, dungeon exploration, attack on capital, and eye of midnight) are the best of the bunch, as they flow so seamlessly together and are interwoven in a way that you literally can't drop the manga until they're finished.they have some very exiting moment with multiple fun character introductions and you see for the first time the amazing capacity of this world's magic and aaaaaaaaa I love it
Doesn't hurt that the art is also freaking gorgeous (人´∀`).☆.。.:*・°

The worst of the arcs would be the 6th"withce's forest" arc ....UGHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
God I hates that arc with all my being, the biggest mess this manga has yet to produce-besides the current rushed out arc-with characters going nowhere and everywhere at the same time if that was even possible.the sudden jarring shift in pace from fast to OH MY GOD STOOOOOP WTF speed with
Multiple plot threads going all over the goddamn place and SOMEHOW ending with even more of a cliché than i've already predicted.as well as the confusing and honestly stupid decision to feature characters from the light novel as a main cast in this arc that made me scratch my head in bewilderment and trying to remember if I'd missed an entire freaking arc.

Another thing i find weak in this manga are the characters.Lots of interesting ones but with wasted potential being reduced to a one-liner or gimmick.characters that appear and dissappear within the span of 2-3 chapters are pretty common too.and villians being unceremoniously killed.

The weakest of the characters I feel is Yuno, the fact that I had to Google his name after literally completing the manga yesterday says something about the way he's written. The fact that he's supoosed to be the main character's rival makes this even more unforgivable. he's like a skin tag whose only purpose in this manga is to be the poor man's sasuke, that's literally all his character is.bland motivation.bland dialogue.and bland character arc.

I could go on but I feel like I've shredded this thing enough already.

TL;DR great manga if you wanna waste time doing absolutely nothing. The manga equivalent of netflix

People make fun of Black Clover because its basically took every stereotypical aspect of modern fantasy manga and blend it into one series. But in my read on it, its not actually not bad as people tell me.

I can explain the concept of Black Clover on one of the two currently greatest fantasy series ever made: Song of ice and Fire and Wheel of time.

SoIaF basically set on a hyper realistic world were the stereotype plot and progression is almost non existing and its grounded of reality; the main dude die, the dragon eats children, etc. But WoT embrace all the stereotype aspect of the fantasy genre yet still manage to make something great on it.

So in manga's standpoint the current famous ongoing series that's been removing the stereotype elements of shounen(super long fight scene, world threatening tournaments, asspull superpowers, etc.) is Boko no Hero Acadamia. And the ones to took all the shounen elements of the past decade is Black Clover.

This made me laugh and I think I can handle Asta's yelling a little easier in book form. It's more endearing than annoying reading it than it was watching. I'm not sure how I feel about the plot yet, I'm not super interested in the whole wizard knight, wizard king thing, but I am interested in Yuno and Asta's rivalry.

One part Naruto, one part My Hero Academia - add in a dash of magic and a curious premise and I'm on board.

The main character's not overly exciting just yet, he's mostly just headstrong and brash, but there are a few intriguing side characters I like the look of already. The art's pretty nice as well, although the main character's face seems to be out of a different manga at this point so he really stands out.

Edit: re-read this again since I'm about to dive into the rest of the series and it's nearly been a year since I read this first one.

Still the same thoughts - Asta's neat, but not overly developed as yet. I'm glad they made Noelle more sympathetic literally a chapter after her introduction because she would have been extremely grating otherwise.

This is packed with just about every element you can imagine from shounen: magic users, guilds, battle spells, spell books, weird odd characters, sexy puns and an immature self-confidant main character. Asta wants to become the Wizard King but he has no magic so he's trained his body with physical strength. This first volume sees him join the lowest guild filled with misfits, receive the magic of "anti-magic" and go on his first mission. We can see a lot of influence from other manga, especially "Fairy Tail" and Zatch Bell", so nothing unique about this first volume. It's a lot of fun, though, tons of battles and humour, and we get introduced to a bunch of characters.
