A marquess with an inheritance problem.

When his father dies, Raph Bromley, new Marquess of Waneborough inherits more than his father’s title. He inherits a crumbling estate, an ocean of debt, a valuable art collection, and a most unusual stipulation in his father’s will. No piece in the art collection can be sold unless Raph first creates a brilliant work of art. But his imagination is as nonexistent as his artistic experience, and that’s never going to happen.

Thank goodness for heiresses. Raph will simply marry for money. Problem solved. Except his mother’s new companion, a dark-haired, clever, poor beauty tests his resolve and makes him think …

Maybe painting won’t be so hard.

(It is…)

A companion with no home of her own.

Matilda Bellvue has worked as a companion for fifteen years, but she’s inherited a cottage in Cumbria, and she’ll soon make it her home. She plans to spend her days reading scandalous novels and redecorating every room. But first, she must complete one final job, serving as companion to the Marquess of Waneborough’s mother.

Her task is simple: help the grieving marchioness, argue with the hard-headed marquess, avoid matchmakers, and resist spying on naked men swimming in the lake. Above all else, she must not fall in love with her employer, a man who makes her feel like she's finally found home.

Because she has no money. And he must marry rich. And that way only lies heartache.

Funny, sweet, and definitely steamy, book 1 in the Art of Love series is a late Regency romance that's as lighthearted as it is hot!

A solid 3.5/5 for me.

A first time author for me and I'm impressed. I found the writing style easy yet impactful, the sarcasm and quippy dialogues are a hit for me. The author has done a great job in world building this series, and I'm sure the next books will be based on the other siblings. I'm going to keep an eye on those books because I already find myself intrigued by so many of the brothers in this book itself so well done on the author's part.

The first book in the series revolves around the newly minted Marquess of Waneborough, Raph who along with his siblings have been trying to keep their estate and family afloat through the skin of their teeth. Their father was a free spirit, more of an artist than an aristrocrat. And hence plundered all their coffers, and they're desperately poor. On his father's death, Raph decides he needs to marry an heiress to solve their problems and enters our heroine - Matilda. She used to be his sisters governess years ago and has no fortune to speak of, but they've always had a connection and once she rejoins the family as a companion to Raph's mother this connection only deepens.

Their romance is beautiful to read, very well peppered in with his mother's theatrics and his hilarious brothers. There's a sense of practicality to both the MC's that I deeply appreciate. Our Hero, Raph is the MVP for me, really well written hero - practical, emotional, funny and sexy at the same time. No over the top alpha moves, no nonsense and no woe is me attitude. Bless the author.

There is a bit of added angst in the ending which I believe could have been avoided, but that's ok, I'm game. Overall a lovely, enjoyable read and I'm looking forward to the next in the series.

I received this book from Netgalley and the author for an honest review. This does not in any way affect my opinion of the book and it's characters.

The start of a new series & the Bromley family are a delight. The Marquis & Marchioness of Waneborough led a bohemian lifestyle & they collected artworks as though there was no tomorrow whilst all the time neglecting the marquisate. The task of pulling the family from the precipice of bankruptcy fell to Raph, he's worked for fifteen years to hold everything together & has at last almost paid off his father's debts, his siblings have helped in this endeavour. Then when his father dies the siblings discover the will has stipulations for them to inherit a piece of art – each of them must produce a work of art. Raph is no artist so the only way forward is for him to marry an heiress. Matilda Bellvue became a governess after her father died & her first post was as governess to Maggie Bromley now fifteen years later she returns as a companion to the grieving marchioness.
A charming & engrossing read, the pace is good, the characters have depth & the chemistry between Raph & Matilda sizzles. I loved both Raph & Matilda, he’s worked his socks off to keep the family afloat, he's focused & strong. She's carved a life for herself ever since her half brother cast her out, all she wants is a place to call home. I loved how their relationship developed, the banter was witty & their attraction just grew & grew. I thoroughly enjoyed their journey to a HEA. I also loved that the Bromley siblings were there for each other & worked together to help save the family. Franny & Jane were delightful

This story has it all!!! The enemies to lovers banter (though never enemies, but both such stern personalities that the clay is similar), the passion to light a forest fire and the endless supporting love of family. The Bromley’s were her first family once on her own, and they struck a true chord in her. Even after departing, Raph watched over her from afar for 15 years. If that doesn’t say commitment, what does? Of course, the writing is complete with Lane’s whimsical turns of phrase, as always telling a story thru simple statements that are so much more. Completely apt with their story of art and artistry as she vividly paints a picture with her words. I was heart wrenchingly drawn to Raphael and his burdens, such a large heart that he is unable to follow, endlessly putting everyone else first. Perfectly visualized in this quote, “But there was a softness once one scratched below that grouchy surface, a willingness to give everything.” - He is no cinnamon roll (though Charlie’s speciality) he is an out of the box Cannoli, written to perfection. A tough and crusty exterior, with a deliciously sweet creamy centre. Matilda, the eternal caregiver who has always been a part of this family comes in and skillfully puts everyone to rights. And of course, a side cast to win your heart and leave you in stitches. The gaggle is spitfires (Jane & Franny), oh how I loved them and their hilarious matchmaking shenanigans. The endlessly supportive siblings, on the sidelines but supporting so well even Raph isn’t aware until the end. And the brother-in-law, who is was an adorable riot! These characters are a part of me now, and I cannot wait to explore more with the Bromley’s.

Raph Bromley, new Marquess of Waneborough, inherits debt and an art collection he can’t sell unless he creates a brilliant work of art. So Raph will simply marry for money. Matilda Bellvue has inherited a cottage she’ll make her home after serving as companion to the Marquess of Waneborough’s grieving mother.

She has no money and he must marry rich, and falling in love offers only heartache.

Yes, it’s bonkers setup with this will, especially with the grieving mother to decide if Raph’s art is worthy. But Matilda and Raph hooked me from the get-go. Good pacing, great character development, charming romantic tension. Raph’s mother is hard to sympathize with but Matilda and Raph are adorable together. There were a few gifts Raph gave Matilda but we never saw him thinking of giving her the gift or her reaction to receiving it. Just her thank you from his point of view. It was an odd choice and a missed opportunity to deepen their connection.

Why have I not read this author before? Steamy, low angst, lighthearted. I need to find her other books. I’m ready for Atlas’s story, but it seems I’ll get Lysander’s first.

I received an arc from NetGalley.

Short, sweet, and to the point, Portraits, Passion, and Other Pastimes spins a preposterous premise into a charming romance between Raph, a lord navigating the muddled mess his late father has left of his estate, and Matilda, a professional widow’s companion.

Portraits is a fun, easy regency romance set in a dilapidated country estate, with all the trappings one could expect: meddlesome dowagers, inconvenient siblings, unpaid debts, a harvest festival, and an eldest son torn between his own desires and his duty to his family. The central conceit of Portraits is that in order to claim his inheritance, Raph must produce a work of art with enough skill and artistry to satisfy his late father’s last wishes… as judged by his mother, Franny.

This is where the novel fell flat for me. Franny is an absolute disaster of a mother and refuses to engage with the financial realities of her home life. She is constantly shrieking and wailing (quite literally) about how much she despises her son’s attempts to solve their financial woes by marrying an heiress, while refusing to simply release her children’s inheritances. So much of the premise hinges on this behavior being, if not laudable, at least understandable. However, I found her excruciating and unsympathetic. Matilda’s work towards pulling Franny out of her mourning is supposed to show her character and support Raph’s infatuation with her, but I hated Franny’s childishness so much that all I wanted Matilda to do was stand up to her.

Otherwise, the romance between Raph and Matilda is quite charming! I really liked his haphazard attempts to interpret his world through painting, and Matilda is refreshingly forward without coming off as desperate or self-sacrificing. The third-act breakup felt a little rushed, but the way they end up getting back together was so touching that I didn’t mind.

Would I recommend it?

YES, if:
- You love supportive sibling dynamics
- You like to finish your romance novels in one sitting
- You love heroines who aren’t afraid to ask for what they want

NO, if:
- You want a slow simmer with lots of pining in your historicals
- Caricatures as side characters drives you nuts even if they’re fun
- You like a solid B plot to your romance novels

Oh my !!! This book really led me on wild journey, and while I was 99% of my reading upset, angry, needing to lash out, it also means this story was very well done to bring out so many emotions.
If the characters had been TSTL, I would have given up the book early in the story but I wanted to see the heroine realizes how sweet the hero was, how devoted to everyone he was when his egotistical parents had done everything to destroy what wasn’t their.

Art is good for the soul but to be able to feed your mind you must sustain your body something the hero’s parents forgot, they were to me selfish spoiled beings who waisted their legacy to boost their ego and never once had a thought for the people they had to protect or take care.
Then the hero is called cold by the heroine who had once been one of his parents’ victim as they let her down, and during her whole working life, he has been the one to find new opportunities each time she had need. So how could he be labeled as cold when he has sacrificed the last fifteen years of his life to try to save what could still be salvaged after his every attempt has been met with one letdown after another by his father. He made sure to always repay what the marquisate owed to others when his sire was throwing money he did not have through the windows.
Then despite his mother’s every histrionics, he seeks for her a companion, someone to relieve her from her own contrived misery.
Have I been in his shoes, I would have send her to the dowager house with the comfort he was able to get for himself, no less no more, which is close to none, to make her understand how disrespectful for other livelihoods they careless actions have caused, endangering many existences.
All their children have had to pay for their parents’ thoughtlessness.
Why I came close many time to throw this book so upset at those who wanted to ease the burden of the marchioness when she never did anything to ease her children’s. And Ralph and his siblings sacrificed close to everything to restore their legacy.

« You love this place and all of us more than any of us deserve, and you tear yourself apart for us every day. »

I was not much found of the heroine, because if she has been thrown out by her half brother, her hardships were less harrowing than most single female, her background and education allowed her a better position than most women, even with the risks any alone woman might face, as it has alas always been the lot of women, and while it was still in service as most people work for someone, even those who are their own master, they still need to do something to earn a living. So years without a real home, it is, of course, normal for her to want a home, but she has not right to be so judgmental toward the man who soothed her path and does everything to restore what was once, even sacrificing his happiness.
I began to warm to her when she finally acknowledged the hero was running himself to the ground not for himself but for all those around him.

“Give me you. All I want is you. You are my home. It’s why I could not leave.”

After you can not stop loving the people in your life because you had decided to, so for all his abysmal failures, why the Bromley siblings still love their parents even when they want to wish them to hell. Ralph’s parents loved them, they were just too self-centered to go out of their egoistical ways, leaving to others to sort out the mess they orchestrated by being them and not caring enough to try to better themselves for others than their self-serving beings. Because one is free to do with their life as they want, as long it does not impede someone else’s journey.

When I read the twist in the will, I was definitely ready to burn the book if I could. Or to curse Ralph’s sire.
Then finally, Ralph’s mother in some way realizes the damage they have done with her husband. And while it will never be able to compensate for the hell they dug their children in, it was finally something.

So if you are seeking a story packed with angsts, manipulating people, secrets, cinnamon roll heroes and unconditional love, this is one.

This is the first book in a new series that will follow several siblings. The parents are total buffoons who only love the "arts" and basically squander all of the family money to support artists and artworks. The family has lived in near-poverty because of this even though the father is a Marquess. When he dies his will stipulates that each child will receive a painting from his collection that is valuable but they must first make a piece of art that is to be judged by their mother.

What is the heir supposed to do when he has no talent? Marry for money. What does he do when his mother's new companion is the woman who used to be his sister's governess who he let go because they could not pay her? Falls in love.

I found the mother to be annoying. The whole you must produce a work of art before getting your inheritance was ridiculous. He was the heir, it all belonged to him anyway.

Charlie Lane has crafted a beautiful, clever, funny, emotional, and deeply satisfying novel in Portraits, Passion, and Other Pastimes. The story opens with a prologue taking place on an English estate in 1806. Matilda, 19, daughter of a baron but orphaned and cast out by her half-brother, has found a loving family who take her in as a governess for their younger daughter. Their 22-year-old son, Raph (Raphael), Viscount Stillwell, is drawn to her, as she is to him, but he has deeper concerns that govern him. His father, the Marquess of Waneborough, has spent the family fortune on art and artists. The estate is crumbling, and the family is on the verge of destitution. No longer able to pay her salary, Matilda is dismissed as governess. Raph who must take control of the estate, promises to always protect her, and finds her a new position (one of many he finds for her over the next 15 years). At the opening of Chapter One, 15 years later, Raph is now the Marquess of Waneborough, Matilda is a paid companion to a widow, and at Raph’s request, agrees to return to the estate to help with his widowed and grieving mother. As the story unfolds, Matilda and Raph are drawn to each other, but it is for nought: Raph must marry an heiress to save the estate or fulfill a seemingly impossible task to earn his inheritance (according to the stipulations of his father’s will), and Matilda has no money. She has planned to retire to a cottage in Cumbria left to her by a deceased aunt. Without revealing spoilers, let me just say that Lane steers away from the predictable and makes some refreshing plot twists.

Matilda and Raph have both shouldered great responsibility because of their loving, but ultimately careless, parents. They are both searching for a home. Matilda literally hasn’t had a home since she was a child, and Raph’s home is falling apart and physically and metaphorically. Through their struggles to help Raph’s mother and the estate, they are forced to confront the attraction they have felt for each since first meeting 15 years earlier. There is some excellent witty banter, fun situations (two of which delightfully include the lake) that lay bare their desire for one another, and an increasingly irresistible attraction. I particularly enjoyed how tormented Raph was by his inability to act on his feelings for Matilda because of his duty and responsibility. I loved that it was Matilda who tried to be pragmatic about their attraction. At 34, she rightfully feels entitled to act on her desires for once having given 15 years of her life in the service of others and their needs. She is strong, witty, hard-working, deeply empathetic, and so very lovable. Raph is rougher, more guarded, but like Matilda in fundamental ways. Despite his sometimes-crusty exterior, he is also hard-working, clever and lovable. The gestures and gifts they give each other are both heart-wrenching and amusing. The path to their HEA is twisted and has a great many original obstacles. There is a host of entertaining secondary characters that add to the book’s depth and charm. The beautifully rendered love scenes are steamy, emotional, and often have a dash of humour thrown in. The epilogue is a delight, but I really didn’t want the book to end. The good news is that this is the first book of a new series, Art of Love (but can be read as a standalone). Charlie Lane has a beautiful, playful, and skilled writing style. I found myself highlighting passages and lines in my eReader so I could return to them later. While I usually do this with most books, I noticed that I had a larger number of highlighted passages than usual by the end; the book is that wonderful. I so enjoyed everything about this book and highly recommend it! I can’t wait for book #2 and plan to start reading Lane’s back catalogue (I don’t know how I missed reading her work before).

Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion.

Charlie Lane writes with a lightness and humour that makes reading her stories so fun and enjoyable. I loved the banter and dialogue, and the fun characters. Lady Pratsby was such a fun side character with some great lines that made me laugh. This is a fun historical romance with some grumpy-sunshine, differing social status themes, and a hero/heroine somewhat different from the norm.

The story starts over a decade prior when Raph Bromley was the young Viscount, heir to the Marquess of Waneborough, and Matilda Bellvue was the nineteen year oldgoverness in their home, to his young sister. She had recently come to their household after being tossed out by her half brother, after the failure of her father to arrange for the security of her own future, upon his death.
The Waneborough's are rather Bohemian in their lifestyles, and Raph is a young man developing a sense of responsibility to the estate, and frustrated by his father's lassaiz faire attitude to management. The Marquess would rather focus on art and fostering artistic endeavours, leaving the management of monies and the estate to his steward. Imagine Raph's shock when he finds the steward leaving their employ with the blunt statement that they have no monies. Raph is forced to make decisions for the family, including to fire Matilda. But he promises to do what he can to help her.

Raph keeps his promise and Matilda is set up with other employment opportunities over the years, as a governess or companion. In the present day, of the 1820s, Matilda, now in her 30s, is the companion to Lady Pratsby, a widowed Viscountess. She intends for this to be her last post, as she has inherited a cottage in Cumbria and small annuity, enough for her to retire there and be her own mistress.

But Raph, now the new Marquess, and having to manage an impoverished estate and his family, seeks her out to be a companion to his own recently widowed mother, to help her in her deep mourning. His father has set out a will for his children challenging them to engage in artistic expression to gain their inheritance. The shame is that none of them have the same artistic nature of their father and Raph still has estates, family, and tenants to care for. He wants Matilda to deal with his emotionally distressed mother through her mourning period, while he focuses on trying to gain his inheritance, and perhaps court a wealthy heiress to refill the coffers.

But what he really wants, and has wanted since he was younger, was Matilda.

Talk about slow burn! It took them 15 years!

This is a story that is chock full of interesting characters and dialogue. The secondary characters are quite bright points for me, acting as comedic foils - Lady Pratsby, Tobias, the brother in law to the Bromleys. There is good dialogue with lots of humour, and even the dead are interesting - what the heck was with that convoluted will of the old Marquess and how the heck did the artsy couple have children and not impart their appreciation of art onto them?? Then for the Marquess to leave them in such a bind - and one with a twist in the end. The parents sound kooky but loveable - but definitely frustratingly kooky!

4.5 stars out of 5 for being different, with interesting, humorous dialogue and characters.

I am a longtime fan of Charlie Lane. I love her books, so I was eager to read the first book in her new series. Portraits, Passions and Other Pastimes by Charlie Lane was a delight to read. We are introduced to the family of the Marquess and Marchioness of Waneborough, their children and their governess, Miss. Matilda Bellvue. Her time with the family was short-lived as their oldest son, Raph (named for Raphael) found out that his parents had basically spent all their money and he wouldn’t be able to continue to pay her salary.

Forward 15 years and Raph is now the Marquess as his father has passed away. As hard as he worked to fill the family’s coffers, it still wasn’t enough. He is on the cusp of asking for the hand of someone with a large dowry. First, he needed the help of Matilda to help with his mother who dramatic grief was driving him mad. Long ago there were some feelings stirring between Raph and Matilda that couldn’t and didn’t go anywhere and now she would be her salvation. Raph worked tirelessly to make the estate profitable while also being given a new task by his late father. To get his inheritance he had to create a brilliant work of art, himself. Raph is grumpy, tired, conflicted, but won’t accept help or at least not gracefully.

As Matilda reenters the family’s life, she brings with her everything that Raph wouldn’t let himself dream for or long for as he thought he needed to bear the whole burden of taking care of his family. Matilda along with her employer come to help take care of Raph’s mother, to help her grieve. I absolutely love the dynamic between the three women, the friendship, the love that grows, the humor and the naughtiness they bring, especially as they try to foster a relationship between Matilda and Raph.

Charlie Lane builds amazingly lovely characters and interweaves relationships so well. No character is an island, and this author makes sure the village is well built. She brings humor, love, steam, the pull of attraction and longing to her stories and this time is no exception. I loved their HEA as you could see how they wanted to make sure the other had what they thought they needed, when all they needed was each other. And as they come to that realization, as Raph struggles with his art, as Matilda struggles with the need for her own home to replace the one she was thrust out of as a young women by her half-brother , we the readers must wait as they realize what they need to make a home, how to open their hearts and take the chance.

Read Charlie Lane’s books, and definitely read Portraits, Passions and Other Pastimes. I am anxiously awaiting the next book in the series as I have enjoyed all the characters I have met so far. I cannot recommend this author and this book enough if you love historical romances.

I received an ARC of Portraits, Passions and Other Pastimes by Charlie Land from NetGalley and voluntarily read the book.

When his father dies, Raph Bromley, becomes the Marquess of Waneborough, he inherits loads of debt and an estate that is falling apart. For the last fifteen years, Raph has been trying to get their finances in order without success. His father, was a well known artist and Raph plans to sell the art work to save the estate and get his finances back in order. However, due to a very unusual stipulation in his father’s will that option is no longer plausible, so he decides to marry an heiress to save the family.

If things weren’t bad enough his mother is falling apart and cannot come to terms with losing her beloved husband. Raph can only think of one person that might be able to soothe and help his mother, Matilda Bellvue, who fifteen years ago he had to let go as the family governess and he has helped her with employment all these years. Just as Matilda is finishing up her last assignment to enjoy the cottage by the sea that she has inherited, Raph asks for her help, which she initially refuses but reconsiders, he helped her for so long how can she refuse.

As expected, Matilda is the perfect companion for Raph’s mother and when he asks her to help him understand art to try to fulfill the inheritance clause, the attraction that has been there all these years flares. But, she wants a home of her own, and he needs money for the estate. Will they put aside their wants to fulfill their desires?

A beautifully written second chance at love story, the characters have depth, and are well written, they are opposite in every way, he is all gloom and doom, and she is like sunshine on a dreary day. The emotions that were experienced by Raph and Matilda was like riding a roller coaster, up and down, and all around, but written so beautifully by Charlie Lane. The connection and feelings that they have for each other cannot be ignored, and with Raph’s mothers meddling, and funny antics they don’t stand a chance.

I enjoyed this great series starter from Charlie Lane and look forward to seeing where she takes us in the next book. I received an ARC copy of this book from the author and am providing my honest review.

“Portraits, Passions, and Other Pastimes” is a Regency romance by Charlie Lane. It’s the first book in the Art of Love’ series, the rest of which promise to be equally entertaining. This book was creative and so much fun.

The prologue of the story introduces the main characters, Raph and Matilda. He’s the eldest son of a Marquess and she’s governess to his youngest siblings. In that introduction we also find out that his parents are very unusual people who value art above all else – and the way they spend money proves it. The lack of money forces the position of governess to be eliminated from the household. Fast forward 15 years and Raph has inherited the title his late father held, along with official responsibility for the financially bankrupt estate. He’s already spent the last 15 years paying off debts his parents incurred and continued to amass. Now he’s also dealing with his bereaved mother and wild stipulations in his father’s will. Matilda worked for years as a governess for other people, and then as a paid companion to a series of widows. Raph has helped her find each position, so when he realizes he has to find someone to help his mother, Matilda is the natural choice.

It would be impossible to describe all that takes place in this book; you simply have to experience it for yourself. The main characters are entertaining in the actions they take and their thought processes as awareness sparks and grows between them. Their personalities are similar in ways that make them clash, but that also provides them with insight and understanding about each other. And when they give in to their mutual attraction… Be warned that steam might arise from the pages of your book. There are a lot of secondary characters, each of whom adds so much to the overall story. The dialogue and banter are well done, as is the pacing with which it all unfolds. I thought the ending was excellent, and am looking forward to the stories to come about the rest of Raph’s siblings.

For fifteen years Raphael Bromley fought to keep his parents exorbitant spending on art under control. Alas to no avail. He inherited the title, a crumbling estate, debts and an inconsolable mother. Raph and his siblings were each granted a painting as well, but in order to claim them his father’s will stipulates they each have to create their own work of art.
To marry an heiress would be the most logical solution to his problems. Were it not for the governess he had to let go years ago. She’d inhabited his dreams ever since. Could he be so bold as to ask her one more favour?

After being cast out by her half-brother, Matilda Bellvue found a new home working as the governess for the Marquess of Waneborough. But her happiness was short-lived when the family ran out of funds. Their eldest son made sure to find her a new position whenever she needed it, and now, after fifteen years, she would finally be free. A small cottage of her own…
Until Raph unexpectedly shows up, asking her to be his mother’s companion. She’s had a tender for him for years and nothing to offer but her expertise in consoling widows. Would accepting be wise?

Meddling dowagers, a unique set of siblings, colourful villagers, apples, a lake and a harvest festival complete the setting for this assertive Lady and dutiful Lord, both resolute and torn between duty and heart. Some paint and a little push might be exactly what they need…

📚 Quick wit, sarcasm and practical, no-nonsense MCs make this a fun and captivating story. Touching, sweet and steamy romance. She's the infusion of colour into his grey, the balm to his soul, the one who won't back down. And he's the home her heart craves. Caring, dependable and grumpy, but perfectly irresistible.
I really enjoyed this book and I’m very much forward to see how this series continues!
📚 Slow burn, pining, grumpy/sunshine, steamy, open door, second chance

Portraits, Passion, and Other Pastimes by Charlie Lane was an unexpected treat! It felt a bit slow in the beginning, but once the foundation was laid the story took off.

Matilda and Raph burrowed into my heart. Matilda’s ability to take charge but also connect with others served her well as a governess and a paid companion. She was Lady Maggie’s governess and years later she returned to the family as the Marchioness of Waneborough’s companion.

This romance explores their winding path toward realizing they are meant to be together. Along their journey you’ll experience their lows while they help the marchioness through her mourning of the former marquess, her deceased husband, and Raph’s struggle to earn his inheritance. You’ll also experience the joy of their highs as they discover one another and some other simple pleasures.

One of my favorite parts of the story is the unlikely friendship between Jane, Viscountess Pratsby and Franny, Marchioness of Waneborough. Together, they are unpredictable and tons of fun. They definitely keep the younger generation on their toes!

Lane created a wonderful world for me to get lost in while reading. I feel like I could wander the estate and the town of Fairworth and not get lost. She also shared her sense of humor through descriptive names for the room Raph used for painting. How could you not laugh out loud at Purgatorial Painting Parlor, Abominable Art Apartment, or the Chalk Chamber of Horrors? I’m looking forward to reading about Zander and Fiona’s escapades!

I received an ARC from the author. The opinions expressed above are mine.

When his father dies, Raph Bromley, new Marquess of Waneborough inherits not only his father’s title but an incredible amount of debt and little finances to pay it off. To access any possible inheritance, his father’s will has stipulated that he produce a brilliant work of art that his mother must approve. So, Raph decides that he must marry for money despite his attraction to Matilda, a woman that was his sister’s governess many years ago. When Raph reaches out to her to become his widowed mother’s companion, Matilda is reluctant as she wants to finally settle in her new home. However, Raph has always looked out for her, assisting her in obtaining work as a companion since she left his family home. Yet as they spend time together, she needs to remember that has a new home to go to, even though when she is with him, she feels like she has finally found her home.
An entertaining read with two marvellous characters in Raph and Matilda. Their attraction begins in the epilogue and the bond they share, simmers throughout until their attraction can’t be contained. I loved his mother and Lady Pratsby Matilda’s employer who are forever trying to play match maker to Matilda. I also look forward to reading more about Raph’s sibling who provided some entertaining moments throughout the book.

This is the start to a delightful new series, Art of Love. Ms Lane is such a pro at creating enchanting Regency tales, and this latest book is no different. With his father's passing, Raph is now the new Marquess of Waneborough. He not only inherits the title, but also the debt and an estate which his father left in shambles. He also left a valuable art collection, but it comes with a stipulation. He can't sell any of the pieces until he creates a piece of his own. Well, Raph doesn't have an artistic bone in his body, so his only choice at money now is to marry an heiress. The only problem is, his bride searching efforts become distracted by his mother's companion, Matilda. Matilda was once governess to Raph's sister years ago, and now she is back and Raph can't stop thinking about her. Matilda is also drawn to him, but she knows he must marry for money to save the estate, and Matilda is penniless. But that doesn't stop the longing and affection they feel for each other.
This was an utterly charming read with well-developed characters that I was immediately endeared to. The chemistry between Raph and Matilda was strong and I loved their interactions and witty banter. The story was well-written and flowed smoothly and I enjoyed the plot twists throughout. A very enjoyable read which I would most definitely recommend!

Wow! This wonderful story kept me up reading into the wee hours of the night, not able to put it down. Our heroine, Matilda, was described as “soft and strong” and she truly was. She was sweet and kind yet take charge and resilient. After losing her parents, and being rejected from her home by her Baron brother, she was forced into servitude. There she met Raph, when she became his sister’s governess. That ended all to soon as finances became impoverished, but Ralph continued to help her find positions over the next fifteen years, until at last she returned to companion his grieving mother. They were always drawn to one another, but finances were always at the center of Raph’s concern, and he knew it to be his duty to sacrifice his desires for the sake of his family. He would need to wed an heiress. Raph and Matilda could not deny the love between them, but he remained steadfast to his duty, setting poor Matilda on a roller coaster of, “he loves me, he loves me not”. How many people are like that; thinking that money is all it would take to be happy? Perhaps, my favorite line in the whole story was, “the things we think are most valuable are not. They’re fake. The real priceless bits of art are in the people we love”.

A great way to begin a new series, A new favorite story of mine from Charlie Lane.

The thing I love about Charlie Lane is that her heroes aren't always your typical rake or rogue type.

Ralph is struggling to keep up with the demands of keeping his family's home and the people in the village from suffering because of debts that were made by his parents' excessive parties, art collection etc and he was planning on marrying for convenience however when a blast from the past that he has been helping for years comes back into his life, he starts realizing that life isn't just about money and hard work. And that she suffered from the same situation as he did not having anything to call her own or anyone to care for her. Now its time that they not only build a home based upon the true meaning of art. Love, loyalty, passion and so much more that can be only be found within each other.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story from beginning to end.

I look forward to the next book in this series.

The book wasn't bad, I just don't think it was for me.
Raph has to marry a heiress because his father has left the estate devastated due to spending all of the money on art and supporting artists. Raph has tried to curb his parents spending but it has been 15 years and now that his father has died he wants to make things better.
However, his father has willed all the artwork to the Royal Society so he can't even sell the work to restore the estate. His only inheritance will be released when he produces a work of art.
Raph also asks his sisters former governess to come be his mothers companion to distract her.
I couldn't stand Raph's mother. She was truly awful along with her deceased father. They didn't care at all about their kids, the estate or anything. Even now Raph's mother won't just release the inheritance.
I also felt like the plot was weak. The heiress plot was discarded in all but theory mentioned a few times. The siblings disappeared. The relationship between Raph and Matilda was just okay.
I just don't think this book was for me.

Okay, raise you hand if you hated Raph's parents - especially his father? Talk about clueless and self-absorbed. And if his father did know about the swapped paintings then he was really a petty and cruel man as well. I did come to like his mother but not until towards the end when she started to realize what a mess her husband had made of things. Now on to the main characters of this story. I really liked both Raph and Matilda. With all the pressure he put on himself to try to correct the massive financial mistakes of his father and to keep the family and village afloat it was completely understandable why he was looking for an heiress. But I also really liked him for knowing deep down that he just couldn't marry the women presented to him to court. His brother-in-law provided just the right amount of humor to those scenes as well. As did Lady Pratsby. This was a great start to the series and definitely leaves you wanting to know more about this family and how they will find their perfect matches.

Simply beautiful. Heart-wrenching and fun, smile- and tear-inducing at the same time, this first book of Charlie Lane’s new series is a book of perfectly delightful contrasts. It really touched my heart and made me think about parents and children and how love, unfortunately, is not enough. I loved Raph, even if I was annoyed with him sometimes, but I understood him completely for personal reasons. He’s certainly the less cinnamon roll-y hero Lane ever wrote, but his sweet core is there, under layers of hardness for having had to fight for his family’s survival. But the real gem of this book is Matilda, capable and confident, happiness-bringer, the most wonderful heroine I found lately in my HR reads.
And what about the writing? I read every one of Charlie Lane’s books released in the last two years and I didn’t think she could improve what was already perfection, but she did!
This series holds so much promise and I can’t wait to read the adventures of the other brothers. Each one of them seems intriguing in his own way…

When the Marquess of Waneborough dies, he left his son Raphael a mountain of debt. He saves money any way he can. In order to receive his inheritance and be able to sell his father’s art collection, he and each of his siblings must create a meaningful work of art. When Matilda Bellevue’s father died, his heir had no use for Matilda and she has to leave her home destitute. She was once governess for his sister, and Raph calls on her to come and be companion to his mother. Raph and Matilda were attracted to each other when she was the governess, and nothing has changed. If he can’t produce the work of art, he will have to marry for money, and Matilda will leave again. There has to be a workable solution, but can he find it in time? This is an enjoyable story with interesting characters brought together in interesting circumstances. Raph is strong and practical, cares for his family, his tenants, and the people of the village. Matilda is strong, intelligent, and has learned to be independent. Mother is a bit of a drama queen, but Matilda and Lady Pratsby will try to help her in her grief. Raph and Matilda are a perfect match. The chemistry between them is hot. This story is emotional, has a bit of drama, a good dose of humor, a wonderful romance, and a happy ending. A great start for a new series.

Gently Humorous
For the past fifteen years Rafe has tried to keep the family estate solvent and his father’s spending on art in check. On his father’s death at the reading of the Will, he discovers that most of the artwork has been gifted to museums with the exception of a token few, each of which comes to a sibling but only when they have produced a worthy piece of art themselves. With no artistic ability, Rafe sees no help but to marry a heiress. Too bad that the only woman who appeals was once governess to his sister and is now a companion to the elderly and bereaved, with little money to her name.
It was easy to sympathise with Rafe and his trials and tribulations, whilst Matilda was rather delightful in the way she managed everyone.

I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley.

This is book #1 in the Art of Love series.

When the Marquess of Waneborough - Raphael (Raph) - father dies, Raph inherits the title and a mile long list of issues that go along with the title. The father outspent what they took in and now not only is the house falling down around them, but the township is losing population due to the lack of money.

Raph needs to marry an heiress so that he can afford to solve all their problems. The issue - both potential women are as dull as dishwater. However, his mom's new companion, his sister's governess when they were kids, is anything but dull. She does not have funds, but he makes his blood and body respond in ways no one else does.

Can Raph marry for love, or will he put the family's needs first?

Beautiful second chance love

This was a lovely story of a second chance love. It was so sweet to see how Raph cared so much for everyone and even cared for Matilda throughout years when he didn’t even see her. Matilda called him a bear, and he really was. He was protective and surly, but also cuddly and warming.
Matilda was fun too. She knew when to be brash and demanding, but also when to be softer. She and Raph made a great couple.

I loved the interesting subplot story too. It’s original. The dowager mother and the other older lady cracked me up with their antics as well. I couldn’t help but giggle at them.

This book has all the feels and emotions. Give it a try!

A well written well paced story that is the start of a new series The main hero character Raph was perfect practical, emotional, sexy and able, He and Matilda were lovely together a real partnership and good character development. The mother however was a bit over the top and dramatic and will have you laughing and shaking your head, Got to meet most of the siblings and hints of their story can't wait to see where they go. I am voluntarily posting an honest review after reading an Advance Reader Copy of this story.

3.5 stars I found it took quite a time for me to get into the story perhaps because the author is setting up a seies. I wasn't that keen on Raphael or if I'm honest, that bothered with Mathilda and then past 60% it goes into mutual sexual pleasuring and sex. All in all, I wasn't really invested in the 'romance' at all. I don't think I'll continue with the series.
I was also dismayed by the number of times the swear word b#####ks was used by the hero and heroine

❤️❤️❤️!!

I loved Raph and Matilda! Charlie Lane has such a talent for painting word pictures. Raph is a broke Marquess with the weight of his family’s legacy on his shoulders. Matilda has never had a home since her half brother threw her out. Raph has to marry a rich heiress to save his legacy or does he? Will the love that started between the two 15 years ago finally bloom and grow or will he choose duty over love? Lots of wonderful supporting characters to make you laugh. Just a great book! R. K. C.

I loved the start of this series. Raph works so hard to keep his family safe and doesn't spend time doing things he enjoys. Matilda has spent her life caring for others as well. They are a perfect couple and help each other. The secondary characters are great keeping the book moving along. I look forward to reading about the 2 other brothers and how they make their art to fulfill their dad's request.
