Rate this book
With his rugged good looks, vast wealth and family name, hell-raiser Hutch Carmody is still the golden boy of Parable, Montana. But he's done some growing up—making peace with his illegitimate half brother and inheriting half of Whisper Creek Ranch, which should have been all his. These days, Hutch knows there are some things money can't buy: like the heart of loving, ladylike divorcée Kendra Shepherd.

Kendra's quiet mansion reminds her of what she wants most—a devoted husband and the pitter-patter of little feet. She can't get Hutch Carmody out of her mind. But a rough-and-tumble cowboy like Hutch, coming home for family dinner? Seems crazy! Then again, crazier dreams have become reality under the vast Montana sky.

The daughter of a town marshal, Linda Lael Miller is a #1 New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author of more than 100 historical and contemporary novels, most of which reflect her love of the West. Raised in Northport, Washington, Linda pursued her wanderlust, living in London and Arizona and traveling the world before returning to the state of her birth to settle down on a spacious property outside Spokane.
Linda traces the birth of her writing career to the day when a Northport teacher told her that the stories she was writing were good, that she just might have a future in writing. Later, when she decided to write novels, she endured her share of rejection before she sold Fletcher’s Woman in 1983 to Pocket Books. Since then, Linda has successfully published historicals, contemporaries, paranormals, mysteries and thrillers before coming home, in a literal sense, and concentrating on novels with a Western flavor. For her devotion to her craft, the Romance Writers of America awarded her their prestigious Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.
Long a passionate Civil War buff, Linda has studied the era avidly for almost thirty years. She has read literally hundreds of books on the subject, explored numerous battlegrounds and made many visits to her favorite, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where she has witnessed re-enactments of the legendary clash between North and South. Linda explores that turbulent time in The Yankee Widow, a May 7, 2019 MIRA Books hardcover, also available in digital and audiobook formats.
Dedicated to helping others, “The First Lady of the West” personally financed fifteen years of her Linda Lael Miller Scholarships for Women, which she awarded to women 25 years and older who were seeking to improve their lot in life through education. Hutch Carmody is about to make the biggest mistake of his life. Luckily for him, he figures it out before it is too late. Only, the mistake...leaving his bride to be at the altar.
Kendra Shepherd has recently returned to town. She did not return alone. She came back with Madison, her adopted four year old daughter. Kendra is fearful that Hutch will walk back into her life and break her heart again. She can not afford to let this happen. Although, Kendra can not stop Madison from falling for Hutch

Big Sky Mountain is the second book in the Parable series. The first book is Big Sky Country. While, you don't have to read the first book, it would be nice to as book one is where you get the background between Slade and Hutch as well as get introduced to some of the characters who return in Big Sky Mountain.

While, I did enjoy reading Slade's story in Big Sky Country, I really loved reading about Hutch's story in Big Sky Mountain. I did not realize that I was going to love Hutch as much as I came to. I thought Hutch was a jerk in the first book. In this book, Hutch was not only a loveable guy but he won my heart like he did with Kendra's heart. There was just one person that really stole the show for me in this book. It was Madison. The things she would say and do would make me chuckle. She is way smarter then her four years. Loved when Madison called Hutch "cowboy man". Kendra and Hutch's relationship was filled with chemistry but it was slow going in the beginning. This I could understand as Kendra was being cautious with both her heart and Madison. Big Sky Mountain soars! It is filled with great characters, great storyline, and a happy ending. I can not wait to read Boone's story in Big Sky River.

I am normally a fan of Linda Lael Miller’s books but Big Sky Mountain, in my opinion, was not a favorite. Book two in the Parable, Montana/Big Sky series, found me a little lost and the blurb did not truly represent the book.

Kendra and Hutch have a past together; one that clearly neither of them are over. Their lives currently have them both in places where the last thing they need is the complications of renewing their relationship. Hutch just recently left someone at the altar and Kendra just adopted her dead ex-husband’s illegitimate daughter! Seriously!

Realistically, those two stories could have made Big Sky Mountain interesting but Ms. Miller was clearly more interested in setting up plots for future books because there were so many other things going on in this book that at times Hutch and Kendra were merely background noise. There were three other stories (at least!) brewing in this book and they were a little too distracting because it made you forget your main characters. Too much stopping and starting of the stories.

Linda Lael Miller is a wonderful writer. The way she tells a story makes even a story that’s hard to read easy. Kendra and Hutch deserved a full story considering this was their book.

My rating: 1.5 out of 5 stars

The publisher provided me with a copy of this book to review via NetGalley.

This novel starts in a place where most romance books don't, a wedding. It throw me for a loop. Weddings normally come at the end of the romance book, not at the beginning. I figured it had to be the type where the ending was mentioned at the beginning and then the rest of the story would tell what happened prior to that scene. But that was not the case. Once I got over the strangeness of the first scene being a wedding I was able to focus on the book as several of the characters were being introduced and a bit of background was being laid down.

While I did enjoy the characters in this book, all of which were well developed both personality and background wise I did have an issue with one of them. Madison, the four year old girl, in my opinion spoke far too clearly and advance for her age. Perhaps the author just didn't feel the need to add in a true child's touch to her voice, but it felt wrong to me. I realize every child is different and some talk clearly sooner than others, but in my experience a four year old is never that clear and concise when it comes to talking. There should be the odd broken sentence, misplaced words and often simpler words used. I have a five year old son and there have been many occasions where I and others had no clue what he said just because of the odd speech patterns children have, and Madison exhibited none of these.

Honestly the more I read the book, especially those parts involving Madison the less I believed she was a four year old. She was more like a six or seven year old in the way she did things and spoke. I found it slightly distracting, if you are going to put a young child in your book make sure they act according to that age. Yes that may cause some difficulties for both author and reader but it makes things feel more real. When finally there was a moment when Madison struggled over a certain phrase, repeating something that Hutch had said, it felt a bit too late to show that she was truly a child and therefore not capable of speaking clearly and using certain words. If the author does not want to put the time in to get children properly portrayed in a book then perhaps they shouldn't bother having them present. That is simply my opinion.

There is a strong sense of family throughout this book, which is quite often present in western romances from what I have seen. This makes sense as ranching, a theme found in many western romance novels, is a family affair, pasted down from generation to generation. That being said, I felt there was a bit too much of a focus on Madison for it to feel like a romance novel. Yes, she is an important factor to the romance developing, or in this case rekindling, but it didn't feel right. There should have been more between Kendra and Hutch other than Madison who seemed to play the role of unknowing matchmaker. At this point, which was close to the halfway mark I felt there wasn't enough interaction between Kendra and Hutch. There is usually the slow building of something such as looks between then (be it small glances or passion/lust filled gazes), those touches that ignite their skin at the mere contact and make their heart beat fast. Something, anything! But alas it was not the case. But I knew it would come at some point so I kept reading.

Another portion of the book I was a bit disappointed in was the lack of ranch time in this book. They are in prime cowboy country, several of the characters are ranchers or cowboys/cowgirls in some manner, and in fact there was mention of the rodeo coming to town. But overall there was very little to no time spent at the ranch, doing ranch work in the book. Yes, there was the odd mention of how Hutch still herded the cattle and mended fences even though he had plenty of hired hands to do that, but I felt as though the western/ranching aspect of this book was lost.

At this point, I'll be honest with you, I started skimming the pages just to get through it. There was so much attention on Madison and her dog and tiny details that didn't mean anything to the story as a whole - like when Kendra order a chocolate croissant and a double-tall nonfat latte. Really?! I don't care about that! Focus on the reason behind the story, not minor details that leave the reader bored and tempted to put the book down.

Finally! Finally it happened. Kendra and Hutch shared their first kiss of the book. It took over half of the way through to reach this point, and while it seemed a bit lacking in description I was glad to finally see the first sign of this story being a romance. It felt like such a long time coming and as quickly as it happened Madison had to swoop in and put an end to it. The kid is getting on my nerves in this book, taking away from what I think could be a really good book and filling it with page after page of what she did, or what her dog did.

Some people may find Madison to be a cute addition to the book, but I just found her presence frustrating at nearly every turn. I felt in a way she was the Jar Jar Binks of this book, interrupting things, not an appealing character and only ended up taking away from the story as a whole not adding to it. It could possibly be that I'm not accustomed to children in books or the way Madison is portrayed, but at this point I felt that the book would have been so much better, if not moving along at a faster pace, if she wasn't in it. Honestly at this point I can't even tell you what the story is about, I had thought it would be a cowboy romance with a fun twist the Kendra and Hutch were old lovers that fell apart a while ago, but now I'm sitting here scratching my head trying to figure out what the story is telling me. There's a kid, a dog, a woman, a man and a few other minor characters that keep popping up, but nothing a real significance has happened as far as I'm concerned. There's also a new dog now and I have a bad feeling it's just going to be another distraction to the actual story.

Now their second kiss was better, and thankfully not interrupted by Madison. It was however interrupted by their old ways sneaking back up on them, namely their ability to fight over anything. They spoke of this earlier in the book that Kendra and Hutch were often seen arguing over anything and everything, and that is something they do quite well. Though their squabbles seemed more like something teenagers would do than grown adults. Stop denying your feelings and just get together already! You both clearly want it, but the second you start to give it you pull away, deny it, do anything to avoid the one thing you both clearly want so bad.. So frustrating.

The rodeo part of the book was what I had been looking forward to since it was mentioned earlier on, but like most of the other things in this book I found it highly disappointing. There was more attention on their shopping, eating and playing the games then there was on the actual rodeo event. But at least afterwards there seemed to be some leading up to a romance part, yet I was worried I'd only be left disappointed once more. The good news is, I wasn't completely disappointed in what happened next. Finally they let their passion take hold. And it was about bloody time, especially since it was coming dangerous close to the end of the book at this point.

The ending was good, though quite what I expected to happen with this story. Everything was quite predictable. Good though the ending may have been it didn't make up for the rest of the book which just dragged out everything to an agonizing level. You could easily skip 80% of this book and still get the whole story in what was left. If you are looking for a romance novel full of cute fluff and more focus on family and random details than anything else, with a small side of romance then this book is for you. Otherwise I'd say this book can easily be skipped as it left little impression on me.

Overall: The characters were not that great, and Madison especially ruined things for me. The romance was far too slow moving. There were too many other things going on to distract from the main story, if there even was a main story. Part like the rodeo and ranch life were severely under researched. For example, a cowboy would not ride the bulls only once a year and end up winning. Rodeo is not a casual hobby that they do, it's a full time commitment and the fact that it was portrayed so casually really bothered me. They could have done that same rodeo scene at a fair ground instead, simply cutting out that tiny bull riding scene, and it would have felt more believable. So if you are looking for a rodeo/ranch setting love story, this is not the book for you. If you want a slow paced story about family with small hints of other things then you just might enjoy this book.

Lots of sweet scenes.
Hutch (& crew) helping Boone clean up the mess @ home.
Opal mothering “her boys”. Her prayers and cooking and straight-out advice.
The acceptance by Kendra, Hutch & Slade of their backgrounds and making peace with the adults who failed them in many ways.
All the beloved dog scenes.
( I read these first 3 out of sequence but liked this one the best.)

Linda Lael Miller has done it again with the second installment of her Swoon-Worthy Cowboys series. Big Sky Mountain is a great romantic read.

Kendra Shepherd's history with love has not ended well. She gave her heart to Hutch Carmody and yet, he basically handed her over to Jeffrey without a fight when he started showing her some attention. She married Jeffrey a very short time later and that ended just as badly. Jeffrey cheated on her and fathered a child to another woman who didn't even want the child. On his deathbed, he begs Kendra to find his little girl, raise her and give her the love that she deserves and needs. Kendra is back in Parable, Montana with her little girl and ready to start a life as a realtor and mom. She may not be able to make a relationship with a man work, but she knows she can be a good mom and she's ready to live that dream. Now, she just has to keep from losing her heart to Hutch, again.

Fear isn't a good enough reason to keep to the sidelines when there's living to do.

Hutch Carmody finds himself standing in front of a church watching his soon to be wife walking down the aisle. Wanting nothing more than to run from the church Hutch stops the wedding and announces that he's sorry, but the wedding is not going to happen. If only Brylee would have listened to him every time he had tried to tell her that he doesn't love her the way he should he wouldn't have had to do it this way. Feeling like the town punching bag Hutch refuses to hide out on his ranch. He has a right to happiness, too, even if it was never going to be with Brylee. How convenient, that the woman who still has his heart is back in town with a little girl that loves Hutch as much as he loves her. Now, he just has to convince Kendra that the love he feels for her is the forever kind.

I really enjoyed this story. It kind of wrapped up really quick at the end, but I was able to overlook that particular annoyance since the rest of the background was so covered. This book also set us up for at least 2 future books for this series. I can not wait to see whose story we get to read next.

Rescued animals, adopted children, horses, babies, lusty romantic cowboys and nice trucks. What else could you want ? This was a real nice story about a couple who need a second chance after many years of separation, other relationships, mistrusts and miscommunications. They struggle the ups and downs, deal with outside forces and try to find ground to stand on. It all starts with one sexy cowboy stoping his own wedding while his fiancé' is walking down the isle. Opps !
A great second book in the series with a Follow up on the pervious couple. I liked this one more than the first, much more angst. LOL

Years ago, pretty Kendra Shepherd had a real crush on Hutch Carmody. Hutch was tall, handsome and rich, but he was also wild and reckless, too. These were qualities Kendra didn’t appreciate in a man whom she hoped to marry.

Kendra had been abandoned by her mother, who left the waif on her grandmother’s doorstep. Reluctantly, Grandma Shepherd put a roof over Kendra’s head, fed and clothed her sure enough, but Kendra couldn’t help feeling she’d never be as good as her neighbors. Perhaps there was some reason why her own mother couldn’t abide her company, something seriously wrong with Kendra herself.

No wonder Kendra was fine pickings for Jeffrey, who swept her off her feet before Kendra realized what was happening. Unfortunately, Jeffrey made a habit of sweeping a lot of young ladies off their feet and her philandering husband had even sired a daughter, Madison. When her husband died, Madison was the single element left of her husband’s brief life. Madison’s mother was only too happy to give up the four year old and Kendra adopted the young girl.

Kendra wanted to create a stable home for little Madison, the kind of home she’d never had. For that, Kendra knew she’d have to return home to Parable, Montana and face the demons of her past. Unfortunately, that would also throw her into close proximity with Hutch Carmody.

Kendra couldn’t help wondering whether the years had been kind to Hutch. Had the handsome man mellowed at all or was he still a hell raiser? Despite everything that had happened, Kendra feared she was still thirsty for love, a desire which could only be quenched by Hutch Carmody.

This is a very pleasurable book to read. The characters though they have personal issues, the reader gets to enjoy the goings on. Among the members. I love the little girl Madison, Kendra--her mother, Hutch, her Dad, and other cast members. Just a most pleasant book to read.

The First Lady of the West as she is called #1 New York Times bestselling author Linda Lael Miller brings you to Parable, Montana-where love awaits. With his rugged good looks , vast wealth and a family name, Hutch Carmody is still the golden boy of Parable, Montana. However, he's done some growing up--making peace with his illegitimate half brother and inheriting half of Whisper Creek Ranch, which should have been all his. These days, Hutch knows there are some things money can't buy: like the heart of loving, ladylike divorce Kendra Shepherd.

The wedding was lovely, the reception was very very fun, and they will consumate their wedding after their wedding. This has been alot of fun, enjoyable romance. Very Very Fun Book~~~~~ Highly Recommend :-)

In my review of book one (Big Sky Country) I said that I was more interested in the evolving relationship between half brothers Hutch and Slade than I was in the budding romance. While I did find myself more drawn to the relationships outside of the romance again, I did think Big Sky Mountain had a better romance then book 1.

Kendra was a wonderfully rounded character who was completely endearing. How many women are willing to track down the unwanted child of her husband and his affair, and raise the little girl as their own? Having promised her cheating husband on his deathbed, she finds the little girl, instantly adores her and brings her home to the small town she grew up in. Though she is focused on settling into her new role as a mother, selling her mansion and her career as a real estate agent, her biggest worry is how she reacts every time she comes into proximity with the one man who broke her heart…Hutch. Hutch was the one guy she never got over but now he’s got his own set of problems having run out on his own wedding. The last thing she needs while trying to settle into her new life is to get tangled up in Hutch again. Yet that’s exactly what happens. Kendra and her daughter slowly become integrated in his life. The little girl was a shining part of the book. Innocent and sweet she had Kendra and Hutch wrapped around her finger. I kept thinking “you can always go home again” throughout the book. Whether that “home” be a place, a person or both. Kendra fought her feelings for Hutch because of their tumultuous past but he was always destined to be her future.

Hutch doesn’t make it easy on her though. He has his own reasons for balking at a new relationship since he just recently became the towns most wanted after leaving his bushing bride at the altar. He’s still coming to terms with his half brother and the role he is playing in his life now and then Kendra walks back into his life with a child in tow. Hutch yearns for a family and often thinks of his ranch house as big and empty. I felt for him. It was obvious how much he wanted Kendra but her nervousness made the process a slow one. He goes out of his way where Kendra’s daughter is concerned and those little gestures made me like him even more.

The one thing that annoyed me is the huge play up to the third book. We spend a LOT of time reading about the new Sheriff of this small town and his back story and obvious set up of his next door newly turned country neighbor. I thought there was just too much included in this one. I wonder what Miller will do in the last book when she can’t do such a large lead up to the next story? While I find having a lead up important I don’t think it should rival the love story of the current characters. There are times in Big Sky Mountain that was exactly what I thought. Miller does a good job of weaving the new story line in with the current characters so that helps in the process I suppose. Even though I think the back story was a bit overdone I do look forward to book 3 (pub date unreleased at the moment).

Big Sky Mountain weaves the tale of star crossed lovers destined to be together and a town of people who are stuck in the middle. For contemporary lovers, this series will keep you yearning for your own small town cowboy and keep you coming back for more. I recommend.

I give Big Sky Mountain by Linda Lael Miller 4 stars!

This review was originally posted at Book Lovers Inc

My Thoughts:

In The Needy Lover's review of the first Parable, Montana book, Big Sky Country, the review mentioned that the story lit up whenever Hutch and Kendra sashayed through the plot. And that was true for me as well.

Big Sky Mountain finally tells Hutch and Kendra's story, or at least the grown-up version of it. One of the "big teases" about Hutch and Kendra is that they have some serious history that didn't end the way everyone thought it would. Kendra's return to Parable is their second chance. But only if they can start with who they are now, and not who they used to be.

Or who they each think they are.

The problem is that Kendra thinks Hutch is the "love 'em and leave 'em" type. And he seems to be running true to form. It's all over Facebook and You Tube that he stopped his own wedding, using hand signals to keep the bride from walking up to the altar.

That's just low.

Really, really funny, but low. (It was the only way Hutch could get the girl's attention. She never listened. She REALLY never listened)

Kendra has come back to Parable to raise her adopted daughter. Which sounds simple, but it's definitely not. Something happened, and it was a very big something, back in the past. Kendra and Hutch should have married each other, way back when. Instead, someone else, a rich titled Englishman named Jeffrey Chamberlain, came to Parable on business and struck up a friendship with Kendra.

Hutch seems to have gone all caveman and started delivering ultimatums. Always a bad idea. I say "seems" because the story of what happened back then still isn't clear. (I'd love to read a prequel novella really telling that story!) But Kendra married Jeffrey while angry at Hutch, expecting a last-minute storybook rescue at the altar. It didn't happen.

Instead, the marriage failed. Jeffrey is dead. And his dying wish was that Kendra adopt and raise his daughter. His daughter, not her daughter, not their daughter. His daughter. The little girl, Madison, is four years old and an absolute sweetheart. It's not her fault that daddy was a lying, cheating jerkwad.

This story is much more about re-making your dreams in new circumstances than anything else. There is a love story, very definitely, but the real story is how Kendra and Hutch re-build the bridges they tore down. They both dreamed of a life together, once upon a time. Neither thinks they can have that dream back. Kendra is convinced she doesn't want it anymore, but she still wants Hutch.

And Hutch has never wanted anyone else.

This story is also pulled along by all of its characters. That's where the richness is. There's more of a romance than Big Sky Country, but everyone from the first book makes an appearance, and that's a good thing. The town feels like an extended family, and they are mostly folks you want to see again (there's always one bad apple).

I was glad to visit Parable again, and I'm looking forward to my return visit for the third book in the trilogy.

I give Big Sky Mountain 4 stars to shine in its wide Montana sky.

Review:

When I received Big Sky Mountain I could not wait to trot back into the lives of Parable's cowboys -particularly Hutch, Slade, and Boone. After finishing Big Sky Country, I was left pondering the fates of some of my favorite characters, so I was ecstatic to hear that I would definitely be reading more about Kendra and Hutch's budding romance! I liked how the book began, with a surprise, (no spoilers), and how a recap of previous happenings was woven throughout the continuing story. For this reason, I would still recommend reading the books in order, but it can also be read as a stand-alone. I was glad to see the familiar landscapes and faces of Parable, Montana - as descriptive and lively as ever - a Linda Lael Miller trademark, but I could not figure out why I was not as enthralled by the characters as I had been previously. I remembered Hutch having more of a misunderstood "bad-boy" persona, full of unbridled passion; unfortunately, there was little to no trace of those traits in the second book. There were moments when I thought the old Hutch would resurface, especially during the more risque sections, but I was left wanting. Speaking of, the romance level was very shallow, just enough to move the story along, but not really building on anything. Slade and Joslyn interacted more in the last book than Kendra and Hutch did in this one; there was quite a lot of inner dialogue this go around. However, I did enjoy the slowly mending relationship between Slade and Hutch, I was happy to see them getting along and the same was true for Boone's relationships. Character wise, I still liked most of their temperaments - especially Kendra's no-nonsense attitude and down-to-earth charms - but even though they were realistic, I never truly felt invested in their lives. As always, I loved the animal aspect and the plot-line was pretty interesting - as was the subplot. I just wish that the book had contained a little more action, (romantic and otherwise), and a little less daily grind. Although I did not enjoy Big Sky Mountain as much as Big Sky Country, I cannot wait for Big Sky River to come out in January! I hope that I am lucky enough to review that installment as well! Recommended for those in the mood for a family-centered romance with a little heat.

Rating: Bounty's Out (3/5)

Okay, I'm going to probably repeat myself a little from my review of Big Sky Cowboy.
This book/series is what I'd call comfortable. There's no real suspense. No nail-biter scenes where you're holding your breath to find out what happens next. The story is a light, sweet and fun read. To take to the beach. Read while waiting for a doctor's appointment. On an airplane. You get the idea.

The hero and heroine of this book, Hutch and Kendra, are very likeable characters. And in my opinion, I admire how LLM was able to bring Hutch from a jerky half-brother who resented that his illegitimate older half-sibling was left 50% of their father's estate to a likeable, child-friendly cowboy. I was inclined to hate him from the first book, because in my general romance-reading experience, wealthy, antagonistic characters like Hutch usually turn out to be rotten to the core and they wind up getting an ass-kicking somewhere along the line. Thus, I was pleasantly surprised when LLM managed to mellow Hutch and find a realistic way for him to become more of a good guy and to also resolve the issue of him and his half-brother.

In my opinion, the only snag I would have with this book is that I don't understand the timeline between young, probably teenage Hutch dating the heroine from the first book, to Hutch having a flaming love affair with Kendra. It's never really indicated at what point in their lives they were together before Kendra eloped with some titled British lord. Of course, you might be asking, is this really important? Not really, but it puzzled me and I felt it important enough that LLM should have provided a few minor details. I only say this because while reviewing certain facts, I started to think that Hutch and Kendra must have started dating right after the heroine from Big Sky Cowboy and her family were plummeted into disgrace and eventually left town.

However, I digress, the story is enjoyable and sweet. Oh, and I really do love how LLM has seemed to integrate dogs into these stories. It might be overkill to some, but as a dog owner myself, I find a story can never go wrong when throwing a dog...or two...or three...into it.

In closing, I think this is a good series so far. It's certainly a contemporary, modern-feeling book, with the inclusion of a lot of e-mail, cell phones, texting, but still keeping that cowboy-in-a-small-town kind of feel. I give it a thumbs up and will be reading the rest of the books in the series.

Big Sky Mountain is book two in the Parable Montana Series by Linda Lael Miller. I’m a huge fan of everything I have read by her, and I have to say I enjoyed it is my favorite of the two so far. I absolutely love Hutch and Kendra. The chemistry between these two is so smoking hot it’s sizzling!

Hutch and Kendra dated many years ago, but both ended up hurt when they split up. They also each blamed each other for their pain. For most of the first book Kendra was in England at the request of her dying ex-husband. His request was not an easy one. He wanted her to find his four year old daughter in the USA that was in the foster care system, and raiser her as her own. Now Kendra is home in Parable to stay, and she has a wonderfully funny daughter, Madison.

The book opens with Hutch leaving his fiancé at the altar, which only proves to Kendra that he is a playboy heart crusher. But she does see the good points about him to. He is great with little Madison, and the scenes between them are soooo great! How can she resist a man she still loves when he is so great with her daughter?? I mean he even buys a pony for her!!!

This book answers the question of whether or not two people with a rocky past can get over those hurts. There are so many things to love about this book. You get to see Hutch’s relationship with his half-brother Slade grow into an action sibling relationship. I love how the children in Linda’s books actually play a part in the story! They aren’t just sprinkled in as an accent. Plus the smoking hot sex will have your e-reader smoking!!! I highly recommend this book and series!!!

Very good book. Kendra has returned to Parable with her adopted daughter, looking for the best place to raise Madison. She has her daughter, her business and her friends, and has no intention of inviting a man into her life. Hutch has mellowed since we saw him in Big Sky Country. He has gotten to know his half brother and they are friends. He has also come to realize that his life is rather lonely. He nearly married a woman he didn't love, coming to his senses just in time. Now Kendra is back in town and making him want what he gave up years before. I really liked both Kendra and Hutch. I loved the way that Kendra was so focused on taking care of Madison. She was a fantastic mom, able to give her what was needed without spoiling her. Kendra and Hutch had been in love years before, but had broken up and gone their separate ways. Now she wasn't sure if she could trust Hutch to be the type of husband and father she needed, as he had a reputation for being wild. She was very cautious, but Madison just loved her "cowboy man" so she decided to give him a chance. Hutch had given up his wild ways and made friends with his brother Slade. When Kendra came back to Parable, he realized that he had never forgotten her or gotten over his love for her. He was determined to get back into her life and not give up on them a second time. I loved seeing him with Madison - it was obvious he was going to be a fantastic father. This was a slower, gentler romance, and a very satisfying one. The passion was there between Hutch and Kendra, but it wasn't overpowering. I loved seeing more of the people of Parable. Slade and Josslyn have become parents, Opal is still feeding everyone, and we get hints of what is to come in the next book. I can't wait!

My Review:

Straight up...I enjoy reading Linda's books and never truly have an issue with them. Going into this book, I was looking forward to it, especially knowing bits and pieces of Kendra and Hutch's backstory from Book #1. I'll admit I'm a little bit disappointed because I felt like I never really connected with the characters in this book and I have no idea why. All the elements were there. The story was well-written, but I personally never developed an emotional attachment to them. I hate that...mainly because I really can't even pinpoint the "why" of it.

What I absolutely did love about this book was the further development of Slade and Hutch's relationship as brothers. I love watching them become closer. The story with Shea and the water-tower...such a great element to this story line...although I wish there had been a bit more between the two brothers after it happened.

There were some great moments between Hutch and Boone too. OMG, I cannot wait to read Boone's story. My heart aches for this widower with so many depression issues. I love that he's going to be paired up with Tara.

Although I personally didn't connect with this story as much as I normally do, I still really enjoyed reading it and definitely look forward to the next installment of this Parable, MT series. I think my issues with this book are mine alone. Because I can't even say what didn't work for me, I don't think it's going to be an issue for you. I still found the book entertaining because there is enough going on with this small town that the book doesn't rely on just the chemistry between Kendra and Hutch.
I received a complementary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

Hutch Carmody had a lot of growing up to do and after his father's death about a year ago that's just what he's done. He's come to terms with his illegitimate half brother, settling with him on his share of the family inheritance. Hutch has also matured in recognizing that Kendra Shephard is the one he foolishly let get away and is determined to win her back, out to prove he's not the man he was back in the day. Kendra is fresh off a painful divorce and has adopted a four-year old little girl. She's not ready to take any more risks for herself or her daughter.

I really enjoyed this second book in the series, even though Kendra's reluctance to engage with Hutch became tiresome after awhile. However, there were so many funny and heartwarming moments it was easy to settle back and hang on for the ride. Madison (Kendra's daughter)was an absolute scene stealer and even the pets (everyone in this town has a dog) brought quite a few laughs. The characters from the first book are also critical to the story, as the friendships play a major role in getting Hutch and Kendra to finally connect. There is a strong sense of family that continues to develop, making the romance that much more poignant as Hutch establishes a relationship with Madison along the way.

I'm looking forward to the next book in the series, which will focus on Boone and Tara. It should prove to be a bit more serious as decisions he made in this story will be awfully tough to reverse. No matter the tone, I'm committed to the end.

Before reading this book I was told this is the perfect western romance to read that will leave you with that warm and fuzzy feeling of happiness. I am here to tell you this was spot on. The book starts off with a bang and straight through out till the end it keeps going and just gets better and better.

I adored Hutch and Kendra (btw Mrs Miller I totally love the name Kendra) to the point of distraction. The fact that this is a old flames re-unite is what made the book for me. I loved how the author used the past to influence the relationship and let it bloom to a beautiful and powerful love story, that will forever more be locked into my heart.

New beginnings and a fresh start is what the book is all about and even though I learned while reading the book that this is book two to a series at no point could I say oh now I am lost. I have never read this authors work but I am thoroughly impressed.

The deeper meaning of the book was for me that friendship is found in the most unlikely places and when the power of love is as strong as that between Hutch and Kendra it shall never fail to rise to the occasion.

Hutch Carmody has half of Whisper Creek Ranch and come to terms with his illegitimate half brother, Slade. His life is going well except he does not have a woman in his life, more specifically Kendra Shepherd. Kendra has returned to Parable with 4 year old, Madison whom she has recently adopted. She realizes she has everything she ever wanted - a loving child, great friends, a good job, a giving town and even a pet dog - except a man and father for Madison. Every time that Madison asks for a father and cuddles up to Hutch Kendra is torn between her past love for Hutch and what is right for her little family. Can both Hutch and Kendra put their past aside and look to the future together?

I am really liking this new contemporary romance series by Miller. If you like to know what happens to characters after happily ever after you will enjoy this series. Kendra and Hutch are introduced in book one along with many other characters. I like that she gives snippets of characters so that when they get their own book their story is not completely new. It is like Virgin River (by Robyn Carr) in many sense.

I was very much hoping that Hutch would be a lot more 'fiery' than his half brother Slade from book #1. Cuz I was just about bored silly with that book, what with Slade's almost non-existence passion.

Anyway, I remembered I was lusting after Hutch after his 5 minutes appearance in that book. He had the bad-tempered-bad-boy look (at least in that book) going on. But sadly, he was not the same Hutch in this book. Like book #1, the Hero was painted as a too cool and too cold Hero. Again.

I just couldn't feel the passion of long-lost-love between Hutch and Kendra. They were going on with their mundane everyday lives and just about 93% into the story, Hutch just suddenly knew that he loved her never stopped loving her all this while. Where did that come from, I have no idea.

I like my cowboys raging and very intense, so this one was a let down.

This is another great book by Linda Lael Miller. Hutch Carmody has been a rowdy cowboy all his adult life and has left lots of ladies in his wake but the one he wants and can't seem to get is his high school sweetheart Kendra. Now Kendra has an adopted daughter and has changed her lifestyle to be a good Mother. She will always love Hutch but knows he is not good husband and Daddy material so is trying to stay clear but her daughter and her friends have other ideas.
This is a good read clear until the end. I recommend this book to anyone who loves Linda and her stories and those who haven't tried her books need to.
Waiting for the next book now. Diana

Miniseries: A Parable, Montana, Novel
Category: Contemporary Romance

"This is a delightful addition to Miller’s Big Sky series. This author has a way with a phrase that is nigh-on poetic, and all of the snappy little interactions between the main and secondary characters make this story especially entertaining." RT Book Reviews, rated 4 stars.

This is your typical western romance by LLM. I liked both the hero and the heroine but honesty 4 year old Madison completely stole the show. I enjoyed the controversy created when Hutch left his fiancee at the alter. I also liked his groveling for the one that got away. All in all a sweet romance that tugs at the heart strings.

Another wonderful story by Linda Lael Miller. This is the second in the series about two half-brothers and a small town in Montana. I enjoyed the interaction between the two main characters as well as the secondary ones.

Looking forward to the next one.

This book is good if you feel like reading something light and fluffy and are in the mood for some country-themed romance, which I was. I can't give it a higher rating than 3 stars just because of the anticlimactic ending though.

Linda Lael Miller knows just how to grab your attention from the very beginning and keep it to the last page.

Big Sky Mountain is a heart-warming tale of family, healing, second chances and love. Kendra and Hutch's story is another great addition to this Big Sky series set in Parable, Montana.

Kendra is as big hearted as they come, not just by going to her ex-husband's death bed and agreeing to his last request to track down the child he fathered with another woman, but by adopting the little girl and loving her with everything in her. And adorable Madison, that precocious 4-year-old she rescued from foster care, steals your heart the same way Daisy the dog captures the Kendra and Madison's.

From the start Hutch is a cowboy that. Can't be ignored, after all, he is slightly infamous, at least locally, for calling a halt to his wedding at the alter... the scene that opens the book. He inspires a hate page from intended bride Brylee and her gaggle of gal pals... even if being left at the alter was somewhat her fault--she'd refused to listen to Hutch on more than one occasion pre-wedding when he expressed doubts.

Being a cowboy with the manners, yes ma'ams, saddle swagger and sexy grin, make Hutch hard to resist. Throw in his rough upbringing, recent efforts to be a brother to half-bro Slade, his ease with kids and critters, adoption of a dog he find in the middle of the road, tolerance and indulgence in older woman Opal's guidance and insistence she's moving in temporarily to "help" him out, work ethic and love of home and heritage, make him pretty attractive. Add in the fact that he can't help seeking out Kendra, the high school sweetheart who left town to marry another man (the one who fathered Madison with another woman) and flawless treatment and acceptance of Madison from first meeting, and Hutch is irresistible.

They each have to overcome the hurt and mistakes of their past before they're ready to be involved with anyone full time. Plus, there's Madison to consider; that little girl is taken with Hutch, her cowboy man, the instant she sees him. What happens if she gets more attached and Hutch bales on them?

You can't help but root for this trio and their critters.

Those who read Big Sky Country will enjoy a glimpse at Slade and Joslyn, Shea, Tara and Boone, and getting to know Walker and an introduction to Casey. At the end, you're left wanting the next books to find out what happens to the other couples. And how cute that Opal is taken from first photo with a potential beau!
