I hate to play devil’s advocate here, but a lot of the folks saying that “popstars”, etc. shouldn’t be prioritized for nominations above “seasoned veterans” and “established actresses” are being hypocritical. If I’m not mistaken, in the past and elsewhere, those same people have said the Oscars should “focus solely on the performances”. If that latter wish were true, the past or future careers of those performers (or where they’ve worked/come from, etc.) shouldn’t matter.

    Just saying.

Also let’s not act that popstars punctually get nominated in acting categories, the last one was Gaga 5 years ago and before her we have to go back to Cher indeed in lead category, supporting we had J.Hud and Mary J.Blige but they’re not exactly popular popstars. This year they can all miss as well, nobody is up for a win between Ariana, Gaga or Selena.

the season hasn’t even started though. We don’t know who’s winning for now. I know Saldana looks the strongest, but she’s no lock and Deadwyler is in a film that won’t make much noise.

    Lady Gaga is Magic.

We definitely do not know who will be winning but at this current moment, both Saldana and Deadwyler are winning/being honored at Festival Awards left and right for their performances. They are both *very* likely.

I rather see professional actresses who have always worked hard for the acting craft, rewarded, than popstars with some acting chops, take the Awards, thank you very much. Cher had to work as actress for very long, before she was seriously recognized and won for acting. She was a previous nominee for Silkwood, had 6 film hits almost in a row and won for the 6th, with her first acting gig in 1967 at an episode of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. so it took her 20 years to win an Oscar, despite focusing way more on her musical career in the 70s.

Gaga and Ariana are professional actresses.

It’s totally hypocritical, not to mention most of the “popstars” have years of acting experience.

Anyway, I still think Rosselini will get in. The last spot is pretty open, she has an incredibly strong career narrative, she’s already putting up a fight on the campaign trail, and Conclave feels like something the acting branch would go to bat for in particular.
