This is one of the breaches in the sea wall made as part of a Managed Retreat creating a large saltmarsh lagoon, which prevents flooding of more valuable land and creates a superb wildlife habitat.

The old sea defences were allowed to be breached allowing a buffer zone of salt marsh between the Blackwater Estuary and farm land behind the new sea defence.

Because the old sea wall remains largely intact at high tide a saltmarsh lagoon exists between the new and old sea defence.
