The edge of a large area of bog and moorland at c. 280m above sealevel on the Midlothian plateau. The OS 1:25 000 map shows the moorland area to be larger than it is now, some fields have been won from the moor.

The Midlothian - Scottish Borders boundary cuts across the bog hereabouts. A gate a short distance NW gives access, but after a few steps into waterlogged quaking bog, your photographer decided against any further advance into the square,... (more)

Curiously the moors are in Midlothian, but Peeblesshire gets the green fields. I suppose Peeblesshire has enough heather. The fields were full of ewes with young lambs, under the watchful eye of a shepherd on a quadbike.
