View
As long as the trees remain small, there is a splendid view from the forest road here. In the middle distance is Gowk Hill, and on the skyline beyond it is Knock Hill. The town of Keith is in the distance, and Meikle Balloch is on the... (more)

Violets
These are almost certainly Common Dog Violet (Viola riviniana), because this is outside the mapped distribution area of any other similar species.

Above Curlusk
Most of this square is forest, but the fields above Curlusk do reach into it. The top of the rather poorly drained ground is just visible beyond the piles of grey brash left by the forest harvesters.

Mount Pleasant
There often seem to be fallen trees beside clear felled areas. I am assuming that once they are deprived of the shelter of the trees which have been removed, the weaker ones cannot withstand the winter gales.

Mount Pleasant
Not only are young conifers easier on the eye than mature ones, they also attract a great variety of birds. I heard several bird songs which I have not heard in mature conifer plantations.

Mount Pleasant
I think these stumps have been left for wildlife. The large buildings in the distance are the Malcolmburn whisky bond.

Spruce Cones
Normally the immature cones appear too high up to reach, but these were growing at the tip of a fallen tree. Shaking them produced clouds of pollen, but I couldn't manage to shake and press the shutter at the same time!

Mount Pleasant
Until these young self-seeded trees grow up there is a view across to the distant bonded warehouse complex at Malcolmburn.

Maryhill Burn
The gully here is the headwaters of the Burn of Maryhill.

Damaged Tree
Quite a lot of the trees beside the forest road have been attacked by a flailing machine that leaves branches shattered and splintered, presumably to make sure that the road is wide enough for timber lorries.

|
Forest Road
The road snakes along the lower edge of the plantations on Mount Pleasant.

View from Mount Pleasant
The foreground is fairly nondescript, but the longer view is fine, with Knock Hill on the left and the Balloch on the right.

Forest Road
The road descends from Mount Pleasant, offering views across open country until it enters the Wood of Tauchers. The hill on the skyline is Knock Hill. A few old logs are still lying by the road; I gather it's not worth the cost of... (more)
