I think the hole in the bank opposite the end of the pipe must have been excavated by the power of the water at the height of recent spates.

Unfortunately the sun had gone in. In bright sunlight these would have looked spectacular.

The colours here are not bad but they would have been magnificent if the sun had stayed out.
