Chapter 1: The Face
The year is 1955, Nova is enjoying Christmas break with her family. Her sister had recently married, so Nova moved into her sister’s old room, which was huge and it had a great view out the window. In fact, the school she went to was right across from the stress, so she could see her homeroom from her bedroom window.
Nova loved going to school and even while having a break was good, seeing her school from her bedroom made it hard for her to relax. One night after dinner, Nova was studying at her desk, which she had moved in front of her bedroom window so she could look outside when she was doing schoolwork, something caught her eye. Across the street at the school, she saw movement in her homeroom. At first she thought it might have been the janitor, but it wasn’t. After taking a closer look, Nova decided to turn off her bedroom light to see if she could see better. What she saw startled her. It was a girl about her age in a raggedy old dress walking back and forth in front of the classroom windows.
She thought to herself who it could have been, but she didn’t recognize her. After watching the girl walk back and forth a few more times, Nova became unnerved at what the girl did next. She had taken a seat at Nova’s assigned desk, which was in the row closest to the classroom window. This had scared her, but she decided to intensely watch a little longer at what the girl would do next.
Suddenly, the girl slowly turned her head and was staring straight at Nova, which scared her even more. So much so, she had decided to close the curtains and go to bed so she could hide under the covers for safety.
The entire following week, Nova would see this mysterious girl perform the same rituals, but little did she know that one night would be completely different. Nova had hatched a plan to confront the girl tonight and find out who she was. And why she was wandering around the empty school building.
Nova’s whole family had left for the evening to go out to eat and see a movie, but she had faked an illness to stay home and carry out her plan. Nova knew of a secret way to gain access into the school building and there were others who knew about the secret entrance too, which is no doubt how this mystery girl might have gotten into the school building too.
Once her family had left for the evening, she snuck out of the house and entered the empty school. The school seemed different at night in the dark. It was spooky, she thought to herself. Nova made her way to her homeroom and hid in the old cloakroom leaving the door open just enough so she could see most of the classroom. She was hiding there for more than an hour before she could clearly hear someone whistling faintly before the sounds started growing louder as the person came closer to where she was standing.
She heard the classroom door open slowly but she couldn’t see the entrance to see who it was. Suddenly the whistling stopped and there was dead silence for a couple of seconds before the little girl decided to speak: Let’s play a game.
Nova heard the classroom door shut with a slam but she just stood there not knowing what to think or do. After another couple of minutes she came out of the cloakroom and went to stand over by the window. At that moment she went into complete terror mode. As she looked over to her bedroom window across the stress, she saw the little girl sitting at her desk in her bedroom. This almost scared her to death and she passed out on the classroom floor.
A few hours later she woke up and quickly made her way out of the school building. She saw her family had come back so she felt a little more at ease to head home. Later on that night, Nova decided to look out of her window again and she saw the mystery girl once again. She was standing in her homeroom staring out the window straight into Nova’s bedroom. Nova quickly closed her curtains as she felt her heart starting to race. While she was trying to calm herself down after the events that took place, she heard a soft tapping on her bedroom window. The tapping was consistent and she decided to slowly get out of her bed and see what it could be.
She was considering whether or not she should open the curtains and that’s when the tapping suddenly and abruptly stopped. She could hear the words, Don’t ever do that again.
In that instance, Nova ripped the curtains open as wide as they would go and she saw the mystery girl looking back at her. They were face to face for the first time since she saw her in her homeroom class tha first night.
Nova tried to scream, but she wasn’t able to. She just stood there watching the mystery girl through the window as she was busy climbing down the side of the house. Nova watched her cross the stress and crawl back up the side of the school building and then vanish inside the building.
The next day, Nova decided to move out of her sister’s old room and back into her bedroom and she was even able to convince her parents to let her transfer to
