Chapter 1 - Messenger of the Messiah

John the Baptist was a remarkable figure in the Bible, and what made him great is especially emphasized in his role as the Messenger of the Messiah. He was chosen by God to be the forerunner of Christ, the one who would announce the coming of the Savior. This role was not just important; it was crucial to the unfolding of God's plan of salvation for the world. John’s entire life was dedicated to this mission, and he embraced it with a boldness and humility that truly set him apart. From his birth, John was marked as special. His parents, Zechariah and Elizabeth, were righteous before God but had no children. In their old age, an angel appeared to Zechariah and announced that they would have a son, and his name would be John. Even before he was born, it was clear that John was going to have a significant role in God's plan. He would be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb, and his mission would be to prepare the way for the coming of the Lord. This was a monumental task, as John was the one who would call people to repentance and get their hearts ready for Jesus. John’s greatness can also be seen in the way he faithfully fulfilled this calling. He didn’t shy away from his mission, and he didn’t let fear or doubt stop him from proclaiming the message God had given him. John went out into the wilderness, away from the comforts of life, to preach a message of repentance. He wore clothes made of camel’s hair and ate locusts and wild honey, showing that he wasn’t concerned with material things. His focus was entirely on the task God had given him. John’s message was simple but powerful: Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand (Matthew 3:2). He knew that the Messiah was coming soon, and he wanted the people to be ready. John wasn’t afraid to speak the truth, even when it was difficult or unpopular. He called out sin wherever he saw it, whether it was among the religious leaders of the time or in the lives of ordinary people. John’s boldness in confronting sin and calling people to turn back to God was one of the things that made him so great. He wasn’t concerned about what people thought of him; he was only concerned about being faithful to God and fulfilling the mission he had been given. Another key aspect of John’s greatness was his humility. Even though he had a large following and many people came to hear him preach, he never sought fame or glory for himself. In fact, John was always careful to point people to Jesus. He made it clear that he was not the Messiah, but rather the one sent to prepare the way for Him. When Jesus began His public ministry, some of John’s disciples were concerned that people were now going to Jesus instead of John. But John wasn’t upset by this. He knew that this was the way it was supposed to be. John said, He must increase, but I must decrease (John 3:30). This statement shows John’s deep understanding of his role in God’s plan and his willingness to step aside so that Jesus could take the spotlight. John’s humility is a key part of what made him great because it showed that he was focused on God’s glory, not his own. John’s greatness was also seen in the way he fulfilled the prophecies about him. The Old Testament prophets had spoken about a messenger who would come to prepare the way for the Lord. In Isaiah 40:3, it says, The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. John the Baptist was the fulfillment of this prophecy. He was the voice crying in the wilderness, calling people to prepare their hearts for the coming of the Messiah. In Malachi 3:1, it says, Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me. Jesus Himself confirmed that John was the fulfillment of these prophecies when He said, This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee (Matthew 11:10). By fulfilling these prophecies, John played a critical role in God’s plan of redemption. But John’s greatness wasn’t just about his mission or the prophecies he fulfilled. It was also about his character and his faithfulness to God. John was willing to stand up for righteousness, even when it was dangerous to do so. He boldly confronted King Herod for his sinful behavior, specifically for taking his brother’s wife, Herodias, as his own. This confrontation eventually led to John’s imprisonment and death. Herodias held a grudge against John and used her daughter to manipulate Herod into having John
