Mate Mysteries - Luna Siliverthorn
Chapter 1
There was tranquility in the darkness. Well, Pip might not be feeling so at ease if he were on the other side of the fence. His dwelling was the periphery of the institute. It was not so safe among the trees beyond. As time passed, Pip had observed the sunset fade into dusk and finally into the pitch-black night. The moon peeped over the top of the trees, providing him with even more comfort while the stars continued to watch over him.
Pip had been by himself for the most of the day. On September 4th, which now marked eight years after the death of his parents, he always did. Pip enjoyed thinking about them, feeling depressed when he thought about them, and grinning heartily at the memories he missed.
Pip rolled up his burgundy blanket and looked towards the institute as the summer air began to cool off. In the moonlight, the worn yellow brick appeared silvery. Fifty windows gave back stares. Pip located the third-floor window leading to their room. Watching him was a familiar silhouette that stood out against the bedroom’s light. Pip was aware that Krey could see him in the shadows.
He thought back to the day he had trespassed and seen the institute up close. Grinning at the far-off recollection, Pip strolled across the neatly mowed lawn, sensing the chilly blades between his toes. As Pip got closer to the door, Krey had vanished from the window.
After a year and eight months, he sped along the hallways he had frequented. He had taken his time to investigate the hallways that few people actually used, and he was well acquainted with the layout of the institute. Pip had even visited the numerous basements, albeit with Krey in tow. Pip did not enjoy being by himself in chilly, dark, subterranean spaces.
It was becoming late, and Pip was heading to the third level without seeing a single person. He grinned at their names written on their black bedroom door as he walked over to the bedroom. Pip had daubed Krey’s name in vibrant script. Pip’s name had been painted in an unkempt gray by Krey.
Pip went inside the bedroom to see Krey warming the bed by resting on his side. When winters were just too chilly without heating, they formed the habit. When Pip had a shower, Krey would lie on his side of the bed, allowing Pip to crawl onto a warm mattress.
Krey continued the routine, even on hot summer evenings.
Hi,
Krey said, removing his top and going completely black. Ready for bed?
He rolled over and patted Pip’s side, tensing his abs.
Pip clambered onto the bed, only to topple over Krey. All day, they had hardly had time to interact. Krey realized Pip required the room.
How’s my Pip?
When his companion forced a smile, Krey muttered.
Pip whispered, I’m okay,
into his shoulder. He’d been emotional all day, thinking about his parents. All he needed was some rest.
Krey was also aware of that. He turned over on his side and embraced Pip. Krey would not bake with another warm body against him because the window was open and the breeze was a bit colder than usual. Go to sleep,
he said.
Putting his fingers in between Krey’s, Pip turned. When he closed his eyes and saw just his mother’s face, he was unable to speak. Pip let his mother’s grin to be the final thought he had before turning in for the night. He welcomed the memories.
Krey and Pip had almost survived the night when daybreak arrived. Krey’s other arm was tucked under the pillow behind his head, but his arm beneath his companion remained stuck there.
Before a knock on his door startled him forcefully out of his deep sleep, Krey had been fast asleep. Krey leaped, and Pip let out a drowsy moan. The sun had just about risen.
With a numb arm, Krey slid beneath Pip and ran to the bedroom door. He pulled it open and went into the corridor. His mother gave a start, then he ran over her. "It is a Saturday morning at six o’clock. What are you even hoping for?
That’s no way to greet your mother.
Makena folded her arms across her chest and pulled her long grey hair in.
Krey wiped his weary eyes and yawned. That morning,
he whispered. What do you want?
Good morning.
Makena reached for his arm. Krey was trapped inside his door with nowhere to go. Their relationship had healed considerably in the last ninety-six months. Even though Makena was still empty in the absence of her partner, she stopped crying herself to sleep and Krey stopped coming to visit her every night before bed to simply plait her hair. Give me a hug back,
she murmured, tightly hugging him. Makena stopped pestering Krey to be an excellent Alpha like his father. Krey was exploring that path on his own.
Why ought I to? You awoke me on a Saturday morning at six.
You signed up to assist in the canteen this morning, which is why. Recall?
No, I was signed up for that by Pip. I-
In five minutes, I should be downstairs getting dressed. You’ve already exceeded your lateness.
Makena withdrew, a sardonic twinkle in her weary brown eyes.
Why are you awake at this time?
Krey questioned with suspicion.
I’m awake right now, all the time. Benefits of an early bedtime." Before Krey could inform her that he was returning to bed, she pivoted tightly in her boots and marched down the passage.
Grumbling under his breath, he concluded that because Pip was the reason he was awake now, Pip should be up as well. Oi,
he bellowed, hurried over to the bed, and grabbed Pip by the arm. His partner averted his gaze and folded his arms close to his body. Pippor, get up!
Not just yet,
Pippor mumbled drowsily.
Krey’s cuteness made her heart expand. Yes. Up, now.
No.
You have no choice.
Pip gave a frustrated whimper as Krey dragged him upright. Krey swung open the restroom door with his foot. He hardly had time to turn on the water before Pip wriggled out of his grip.
Not wanting a cold shower?
With a smile, Krey enquired.
Pip muttered, I’d rather not shower in my pajamas.
smothering a yawn.
Together, they undressed and dove into the shower. Pip was so exhausted that all he did was use whatever Krey had given him, body wash and shampoo for himself. Krey laughed far too much. His hands assisted in cleaning him, which slightly alarmed Pip.
Why did you sign me up to help out in the kitchen?
When they had dressed and made their way to the stairs, Krey inquired.
Pip glanced at Krey’s clothing. Throughout the summer, Krey always worked out more. His shoulders and chest showed the results of his labors. Pip’s gaze dragged along him. Krey’s black jeans were a testament to the hard effort that went into his legs. Because I overheard wolves saying you left all the gritty work to the Omegas… which is true.
Krey clenched his angular teeth. He was unable to acknowledge or refute it. I’ll help with breakfast and lunch, that’s it.
When they got to the ground floor, Pip smiled and swung their hands. Wolves were sleeping in the vacant passageways.
Pip was already pitching in a couple times a week in the kitchens. Since Saturdays were his days off, he left Krey alone and watched the remaining portion of the sunrise from the courtyard. Makena curled her hair between her fingers as she sat next to him. Her gaze was far away. Pip was aware that Roden was on her mind, but for the moment she was happier with his recollections. Day by day, her heart healed, but the scar would never go away.
After sitting in silence for nearly an hour, I want to go to Crescent Town,
he declared.
Makena never took her eyes off the trees. Have you asked Krey?
No, although it has been a year and a half since my last visit. I long for it.
Then Makena turned to face him. She stopped staring as though she didn’t recognize him. Grinning, she gave his knee a pat. I’m not sure how safe it is, even after all this time, the southern Alpha is still out there.
I understand, but I could bring Omegas along. I simply wish to explore the town.
Pip scratched the stones with his white converse. He was dressed in light blue shorts and a white t-shirt. The sun had warmed up already.
Krey is the person you should speak with about it. When you’re the only one on the field, he gets worried. Even though Crescent Town is officially still our domain, I doubt he will allow you inside.
Pip wanted Krey to know that he shouldn’t have to worry about anything and that he should be free to travel wherever he pleased. Pip couldn’t hold it against Krey for being so nervous given what had happened to Roden and Jordan’s betrayal. The more peacefully the pack coexisted, the more they readied themselves for attack.
The fact that the annual meeting this year was conducted via mass video call demonstrated how worried the northern wolves were. Pip was unsure if they would actually meet in person the following year.
He had had enough of being terrified. His physical condition was beginning to deteriorate after spending nearly two years locked up in a building. It wasn’t until he was informed that he couldn’t travel that Pip realized he was a wandering spirit. It was obvious to Krey that he needed some time to acclimate to the place he had abruptly left behind.
Pip responded, I’ll talk to him,
and he opened his book once more.
Makena had no doubt Pip would speak with Krey and win his approval. Pip was quite convincing, and Krey would find it difficult to say no if Pip said that they should go to Crescent Town.
When it was time for lunch, Pip hung around until Krey finished his meal. In an attempt to persuade Krey that it would be wise to spend a few hours away from the institute, he had decided to have dinner with him alone on the field.
Krey said, Absolutely not,
while giving the man he loved a weird look. What makes you want to take a chance? The Alpha from the south may be anywhere.
So, you’re choosing to live your life in fear?
With a keen eye for detail, Pip inquired.
Krey held back. He moved on the blanket, becoming more erect. No, I just don’t think it’s a good idea.
Because you’re scared of a southern alpha who hasn’t shown their face in almost two years?
Pip, it’s been a year and eight months since you left Crescent Town. What if there are unfounded rumors against you or another person? You are aware of how old-timers feel about the rumors surrounding this location.
When I lived there, nobody gave a shit. I doubt anyone even noticed my departure.
Krey gave his partner the familiar look with a little twist of his head. How long did you want to go for?
Two hours max.
What do you want to do there?
Go see the librarians and Debra. And that’s it. I may go to Crescent Café for tea. I can bring as many Omegas as I’d want.
Krey’s eyes narrowed. Pip had a sunlit day yesterday. His nose and cheeks were a shade pinker than normal. What are your plans if things get out of hand?
Krey,
Pip moaned. Moving closer on his knees, he encircled his wide shoulders with his arms. I can’t live the rest of my life on this side of the fence, even if I love you and this life. All I want to do is spend a couple of hours at Crescent Town. We didn’t have any problems in a very long time. Pip brought their brows together.
Come with me if you’re so worried."
I am unable to. I can’t, as you are aware.
Krey was certain that wolves would invade as soon as he left his Packhouse. He was a paranoid person, but so had been his father.
Please allow me to exit. I’ll return with a gift for you.
To ease Krey’s concerns, Pip planted a kiss on him. Just a few hours will pass. If it pleases you, I’ll bring twenty omegas,
Pip begged.
The anguish in his eyes was visible to Krey. He didn’t want to live in constant fear, but he also didn’t want to go without Pippor.
Pip pleaded, Please,
until Krey was powerless to stop him.
Fine,
he complained, but you’re taking fifteen Omega wolves, and Sid.
Pip gave him a smile and planted a kiss on his lips and cheeks. Before Krey could say anything else, he beamingly said, Thank you!
and dashed back towards the building.
Chapter 2
Eagerly, Pip waited for the gate to open just enough for him to squeeze through. Just before he left, Krey stopped him. You have your phone, yes?
Yes.
Pip gave it a pat in his handbag.
You’ll keep me updated, yes?
Pip gave a nod.
Krey told his Omegas, You’ll bring him right back here at the first sign of trouble.
They all uttered Yes, Alpha,
together.
Krey felt as content as he could. I don’t mean to be so controlling, I’m just worried about you,
he said as he gave Pip a hug.
I know.
Pip gave him a closer squeeze. I’ll see you in a few hours.
Krey gave Sid a stern look as he accepted to go as well. When Krey barged into Sid’s bedroom and ordered him to wash off the blue hair dye so he could go with Pip, Sid had been sitting there with it applied. Sid was eager to get out of the Packhouse. There were wolves everywhere who were getting restless, not just Crescent Pack.
Don’t worry,
Sid told Krey as he was leaving. He won’t leave my sight.
Krey grumbled, frustrated that he wouldn’t let himself go with Pip. He better fucking not,
he said. Krey needed to defend the Packhouse with all of his strength because he had put a lot of effort into preparing it for his wolves. If southern wolves were to break into Krey’s house twice, he would not take the humiliation.
Pip joyously bounced down the natural sidewalk, waving good-bye. He left Krey to watch them till the gate closed and obstructed his vision, then Sid ran after him.
Pip was ecstatic to see fresh surroundings. There were animals, moss, leaves, wildflowers, and warmth in the woods. The forest appeared enchanted as the sun broke through the leaves. Pip was beaming all the way to the town.
Pip was ecstatic to see the historic streets. But before Pip could appear, Sid intervened. He inhaled deeply. We’ve had wolves stationed here for some months. Nearly three months ago, a lone wolf that lived just outside of our territory died. I believe you should be aware of the true source of Krey’s anxiety, even though he chose not to inform you out of concern for your safety.
A rogue wolf?
Pip was aware that some wolves were independent and preferred not to coexist with groups. More people disapproved of rogue wolves. Rogue wolves traveled wherever they liked, disregarding the boundaries of packs and leaving a path of devastation in their wake.
Yes, so it’ll be a good thing to keep your guard up, okay?
Pip gave a nod. I like your hair by the way.
Pulling on a short blue thread, Sid sighed and said, Thank you, though I think the color would have been a bit more vibrant if Krey let me keep it on for longer.
I think he felt better knowing that you were coming too.
I am really proud of that,
Sid said with a smile as he smoothed down his t-shirt. With that, he turned to face the Omegas and gestured for them to divide. "I’ll give you the room you need to finish the tasks at hand, but I’ll be here to support you whenever you need me. Say my name, and I’ll be right there with you.
Okay.
After all the attention the wolves had shown him, Pip was excited but also a little nervous about being at the town. There were many fond recollections evoked by seeing the historic cobblestone streets.
Pip moved out of the shade and into the sun. He chose to go to Crescent Café first, avoiding the street where his aunt and uncle lived. Pip grinned to himself as he strolled through the backstreets and soon saw a light blue sign. Pip knew there were werewolves everywhere, but he couldn’t see any of them when he peered around. They were adept at remaining undetected.
Since it was just nine in the morning, the café was relatively new. Pip recognized the faces of the senior residents who came in for an English breakfast every Saturday. He hoped Debra was still on staff.
Pip pressed the door open, causing the top bell to ring. A couple of the locals idly looked at him, then looked again. Pip moved further into the café and they bumped the person they were with. It seemed strange, this abrupt hush.
Pip gazed at the numerous faces that returned the stares. After disappearing from the community, he came back as the most fascinating guy in the area. U-Um…
Pip murmured. Though he recognized the woman entering the main room with a trolley full of plates, he didn’t recognise the person behind the counter.
Debra stopped by a table and traced the local’s gaze to Pip, who gave her a shy smile. Debra was considerably thinner and paler. She had fatigued and sunken eyes. Her eyes seemed as big as they could have burst out of her skull. Pippor,
she muttered before abruptly making her way through the café to meet him.
Debra embraced Pip, trembling and frail. She cried, Pippor, where have you been?
Uh…
A few of the residents got up, and Pip froze.
He was pointing fingers at two old men. That boy, that’s him, the one I saw going off into the woods with the wolves, that’s him!
Until his face hurt, Debra cupped it. How could you have left in that manner? Do you fail to show up for work and college? The librarians plan weekly search parties for you since you give them so much anxiety.
Debra shook her head and released him. "Your uncle and aunt claimed that one day you simply never returned home! Yes, we believed you had been taken.
What? No, they witnessed my exit.
Pip was in disbelief at what was occurring. I-I packed bags and everything.
Why would you do that, Pippor?
I-
Pip’s gaze darted over the space. When their gazes locked, several in the café shook their heads and sneered. I didn’t think anyone would notice.
Was my friendship a joke to you?
Debra raked her hand over her oily tresses. Since you left, I’ve hardly eaten, slept, or been able to function at all. We believed that you had suffered a terrible injury."
An old man grumbled, Something awful did happen to him!
Wolves took him off.
Gregory, my brother, was present when everything happened."
Yes, my aunt Jess did witness him carrying a large, horrifying-looking thing around the institute. On my mother’s grave, I vow!"
Debra’s mouth twisted. Her expression had changed to one of judgment and anger. Where have you been?
Not that Pip could really claim to have been living at the institute with a big werewolf pack. As other residents got up, he began to back away toward the door, saying, I’ve… um…
One said fiercely, We don’t want him!
He is corrupted! Like his parents, he ran out with the wolves!
Though Pip didn’t show it, that stung. He said, I just had to get out.
You are aware of my aunt and uncle’s behavior. Simply put, they have too much."
So, Krey, you took off with that boy? How careless are you really going to be?
Pip attempted to exit, but a local obstructed his way to the entrance. Then Pip noticed Sid staring at him through the window while he stood outside. Pip only needed to utter Sid’s name, and the Delta would storm inside the café, shutting the door behind the elderly man.
Ow!
exclaimed the man.
Sid towered over him, intently gazing. He hissed, Don’t stand in front of the door then.
Pip, let’s go.
Pip tried to move away from Debra, but she caught hold of his wrist. "Until we are aware of your whereabouts and plans, you are not permitted to depart once more. Tell us if you’re having problems, and we can assist you.
Pip tried to get free, saying, I need to go,
but Sid had to intervene and remove her fingers from his arm.
He’s one of them,
a local replied, gesturing to Sid’s face. He got that look about him.
Sid placed a hand on Pip’s shoulder and commanded, Move.
Move or I’ll make you move.
Are you gonna take that boy and eat him like you ate his parents?
Sid sensed Pip drawing nearer to him. It was obvious to Sid that Pip was terrified. Krey would soon sense his teammates’ tension and become agitated.
Get out of my fucking way!
Sid’s heightened voice proved insufficient. The villagers were forcefully pushed aside by the Omega’s as they arrived, allowing them to flee.
After Sid and Pip made it across the little parking lot of the café, two police officers stopped them again.
Sid snarled, Can’t stop,
but the cops were in his way as well.
You certainly can. understand why.
The policeman gave the café a fat finger point. "We witnessed your intentional assault on that old man. You’ve been placed under arrest.
Are you kidding?
Sid waved the Omegas around to encircle them. My name is Mersey, Sid. You must also be acquainted with Krey Graymer.
With evident disinterest, the police officers exchanged quick glances. I don’t care who you think you know, you assaulted a man, and now you’re coming with us.
You too, Pip.
When the other cop extended her hand to grasp him, Omegas moved to block her path.
Me?
Pip gave a squeak.
Kid, above all, you. It has been a year and eight months since you vanished. We can’t just let you stroll.
B-However, I’m not exposed. I’m secure! I’m alright. I am.
With a bunch of strangers.
The tall, robust, and fit men and women caught the officer’s attention. They had initially made Pip feel uncomfortable, but with time, they began to feel like his family.
Neither they nor I are strangers! I was never that! I was simply me.
Sid chuckled as he pointed to the handcuffs, as if he couldn’t just take them off. You can tell them,
he continued. "Krey Graymer’s partner is Pedro. That should have some significance for you folks.
Once more, the policemen exchanged glances as they considered their choices. You agreed to live close to us in a peace treaty. For the last eight months, all we’ve heard is that wolves took Pippor Monty and Mark Gummary. We don’t think that sounds particularly tranquil. They turned to face Pip.
The death of your parents was attributed to this wolf pack. We won’t allow the same thing to happen to you, so don’t panic."
Chapter 3
When the cop reached for Pip once again, he protested, I can’t go with you.
"I’m not disoriented. I never was.
Back then, where have you been residing? within the institute?
Pip found her tone offensive. Crescent Packhouse is my home, yes.
Over the previous year, Pip had discovered tiny levels of stubbornness. Even though he felt at ease with Krey and the pack, he was still afraid of other people. I’ve spent the last year and a half comfortably residing there. I’m not absent. My uncle and aunt saw me load up and head out.
"So why did you keep your departure a secret from everyone else? You simply got up and moved on, making no trace. How could you have assumed that nobody would be concerned?
When I lived here, they showed me no concern. Pip tried to sound brave as he plucked up his courage. What could I have said? Since I’m a werewolf Alpha’s mate, I couldn’t claim to have moved into the institute.
Once more, Sid evaded the shackles. We are not required to defend ourselves. Come on Pip, let’s head back to the Packhouse.
The chubby cop produced a taser from his waist. Angling it toward Sid. You’re being brought to the station by us. When we’re through with you both, have your Alpha come collect you if this worries him so much.
With a sharp snout, Sid peered down at them. Trust me,
he said quietly, you don’t want Krey Graymer to hear that you’ve put even a finger on Pip.
Is that a threat?
Yes.
You endorsed the peace accord. This is the…
Not peaceful for us,
Sid snapped back. "You’re supposed to dispel werewolf rumors. Every nutcase in the community seems to have their own rumor regarding Pippor. It is evident that you have not been searching for him, as you would have come to us after hearing the rumors, and we would have informed you that Pip was with us, secure, and content. Act as though you’re not performing your work right now.
The cop unloaded the taser as Sid crossed his arms. Without even blinking, Sid was hit by the charged darts that adhered to him. He was not significantly affected by the taser. What? Are you feeling intimidated? Just wait till Pip’s knock on your door from Krey Graymer.
After dropping the taser, the cop produced a baton. The baton flicked out, but in an instant, Omega wolves were in his way.
We are able to handle this.
You two ought to return to the Packhouse," an Omega murmured, gesturing for Sid and Pip to flee into the trees.
This is ridiculous,
complained Sid. This is our territory, don’t make us get rid of you.
He’s putting us in danger! Tell the other officer that we fear for our life and call for backup."
Oh shut up.
Crushing the radio against his palm, Sid displayed his might after snatching it. He hurled the remaining radio into the floor. All I’ve done is stand here and converse with you. It’s really difficult for us to leave without creating a big deal because of you.
Sid turned to look back at the café. The majority of the residents were in the parking lot, observing as inquisitive old fools would.
The other officer turned to face him and said, Pippor,
hoping she could persuade him to comply with their request. Your parent’s passing was caused by this pack. They pleaded with us to hide it. Join us so we can discuss it in greater detail and you’ll learn the truth about what actually transpired.
Pip’s head whirled wildly. This was the last thing he needed to hear after spending the entire day thinking about his parents yesterday. No, Crescent Pack wasn’t it. Krey informed me that the pack was to blame. They requested that the story about dogs be changed in the newspapers. The peace accord was broken by you. I’m not a moron. I haven’t simply abandoned ship with a group of wolves. After a year and eight months of living in this world, Pip was irritated and tired of being treated as though he didn’t know anything about it.
Now i-if you’ll excuse us, we have to get home."
But-
Sid didn’t intentionally harm anyone; he was just saving me from a difficult position. I was entitled to leave this town since I didn’t feel comfortable here. Your predicament will worsen if you arrest us and Krey gets involved. It won’t benefit anyone, therefore you don’t want him to be upset with you.
Pip began to back away, watching the baton closely. "We’re leaving right now. Don’t attempt to impede us.
The baton dropped in proportion to their distance from each other. Officers will be dispatched to the institute. I don’t feel comfortable with this,
Sid overheard the officers murmur. "Mark Gummary has also vanished. Tell me that’s not a coincidence, please.
He did not bite back, but shook his head. The cops were fortunate. Had Krey left instead of Sid, the cops would be tending to their wounds on the ground. The thought of what would happen to the old folks who had trapped his companion terrified Sid.
Pip was silent the entire way back to the institute on foot. He was not as excited as he had been on the way there, and all he could do was look at his feet. Sid surmised that he was depressed, both about his parents and the outcome of the visit. Krey would need to be aware of the events. He was undoubtedly feeling Pip’s feelings already.
As the institute’s gate opened, Sid braced himself. Pip moved forward along the gravel pathway. Sitting on the front steps was Krey. Sid knew that he was going to sit there until Pip came back. Krey’s changed look suggested he was taken aback to see them back so quickly. What took place?
he inquired. Pip tried to slide by Krey, but Krey grabbed his arm instead.
I don’t want to talk about it here.
Knowing he would cry, Pip forced himself to look up from the floor.
Letting him go, Krey turned to Sid to explain.
Basically,
Sid remarked as he moved farther away from his enraged Alpha and cleared his voice. Rumors regarding Pip and wolves abound. The locals turned against him, so I had to step in and save him. After that, the police attempted to arrest me for shoving people aside so that I could save Pip, and they then attempted to bring Pip back to the station because he was reported missing. They pretended to have the truth about what had happened to Pip’s parents in an attempt to get him to accompany them. That must have really irritated him." Where the laser had struck him, Sid massaged his tummy.
Now, the resentment Krey had been harboring in the back of his mind began to boil. When Sid told him that they had promised to send officers to investigate Pip’s situation, he balled his fists. I reported to the authorities that he was here a year prior. I fucked them over.
Krey barged into the structure. He followed Pip’s scent to the third level, his rage filling the corridors like thick smoke. Krey smelled the air, not turning right to go to the bedroom. Pip had disappeared inside his safe haven, the library.
Krey stomped toward the attic in rage. He stopped at the entryway, scanning the area for his partner. He turned to Pip, who was standing glumly at the window, and said, I told you it wasn’t a good idea.
I told you there might be rumours.
if you’re here to just say you told me so, I don’t want to hear it.
Pip turned to face the window as his brittle words stabbed Krey’s heart. He encircled himself in arms.
Krey let out a sigh. I’m not sure what you were hoping for. When you were there, abandoned and mistreated, that town had nothing to give. They seem to genuinely care about your well-being now that you’ve returned smiling. What the heck is going on with that?"
Pip remained silent.
Krey tried not to bite his tongue too much and walked up to his mate. Cry-ing would only result in tears. Krey was against that. Rather, he put his arms around Pip’s waist and leaned his chin on him. He followed Pip’s eyes to the far-off Crescent Town. Assholes all of them. We are now under your control.
Pip leaned very close to him, holding his tongue until his lower lip stopped trembling. When I lived there, nobody gave a damn,
he said. I thought it would be the same.
All they can say is that they’re jealous that even if they wanted to, they couldn’t leave that toxic town.
You have a new beginning with us. His kisses softened Krey’s voice.
All they wanted was something to discuss. They had the ideal narrative for rumors thanks to your and Mark’s quiet departure. They wouldn’t have cared if they had known you were residing here a year ago."
Pip realized his point. The people in the area were quite good at gossiping, but Pip was added to the stories like a continuation of his parent’s tale. He was reminded of when they had initially died by hearing them flung around so carelessly. Mark talked about his parents practically every day at school. The rumors about his parents’ deaths, which Pip heard growing up, served as a continual reminder of how wolves wrecked his childhood.
Pip looked up at Krey and shook his head. Usually he wasn’t this depressed about it. Pip was typically really adept at staying upbeat. However, he was finding himself wondering about his parents’ true fate more and more. Who was to blame for their demise?
He muttered, I’m just still sensitive from yesterday.
Even though Krey was aware that Pip was not talking, he decided not to push the issue.
I have a letter or something to write to Debra. The librarians as well. I should apologize to them for causing them so much anxiety.
Pip was unable to get the insane gaze of Debra from his mind. It was a long time since he’d seen someone that broken. Pip was the one who did that.
I think it’s weird how they linked your absence to wolves rather than the fact that you lived with shitty family members for so long.
Pip lowered his head against Krey’s chest and Krey held him. When Pip’s lip began to quiver once more, he made the decision to stop talking about it. Krey pushed a book into his hands and forced him to sit on the couch.
He nudged the book and said, Read.
I’ll watch a film and ask Francis to bring dinner up here.
Pip opened the book and took a seat by Krey’s side, but he didn’t read. All he could think of was what the cop had said. Were they actually aware of the whole truth of his parents’ passing? Pip sneaked a peek at Krey, curious as to which group—the humans or the werewolves—had given him the truth.
Chapter 4
Sometime after supper Krey had gone to shower and enjoy the cool evening air by taking a walk around the institute’s perimeter. Ever since he got back from the town, Pip had been remarkably silent. Despite his innate quietness, Pip frequently had a lot to say to Krey.
It was different tonight. Pip muttered that he would read for a little while longer when Krey inquired if he would be joining him in bed anytime soon. Krey stood in Pip’s library doorway, sensing that something was off, but he was unable to comfort Pip. Krey honored his mate’s request to be left alone and didn’t bring up the subject.
Krey went inside his mom’s room. She called for him to come in when he knocked. She was reading a book in bed already. Through her reading glasses, she gave her son a quick glance.
With a heavy heart, Krey crossed his legs and sat behind her. He began plaiting her hair, using a slightly more forceful technique than normal.
With a warning, Makena held up the side of her head. I’d like to keep my hair thank you very much.
Krey muttered something, but his fingers remained firm.
I assume this has to do with Pippor? The events at the town must have disturbed the impoverished child.
Everyone who lives there can rot as far as I’m concerned.
"Sid claimed he was tased by the police. Sid prefers to use his voice rather than his fists to settle disputes, as we both know. Do you not believe that those officers went a bit too far?
Everyone, in my opinion, acted a little excessive. I fail to understand.
And you definitely informed the authorities about Pip living here?
Makena asked, biting her teeth when Krey pulled on her hair a bit too forcefully.
Yes, unless they simply failed to notify Crescent Town police.
It’s possible that they lack competence, in my opinion. Krey sensed Pip’s sadness as if it were a dull light in his chest. I shouldn’t have let him go.
We shouldn’t live in fear like this.
I’m not living in fear, I’m just being cautious.
When it was finished, Makena caressed the plait and looked up at Krey. "We have fear in our lives. Alpha from the south has devoured us. Isn’t it what makes you believe that they are doing this to undermine you?
I’m not weak.
Rising to his feet, Krey threw the hairbrush against his mother’s dresser. I’m going to bed.
Makena sighed, Wait,
and Krey knocked on her door. This makes me think of Pip. This kind of confinement within a Packhouse is unfamiliar to him. To be perfectly honest, neither are your wolves. It’s not Pip’s fault that he wanted to see the town. It’s understandable that he believed his return would be met with little resistance. All the boy is doing is adjusting to the idea that Crescent Town will never be his home. Because of his parents, I assume he has many memories of the town. Let him feel depressed, please. Makena walked over to Krey. You’re not required to make him happy every single minute of the day just because you’re his partner. It is your responsibility to support him when he needs it. Yes, Pip is generally cheerful and optimistic, but everyone experiences unpleasant days. He’ll soon return to his usual self.
Krey wiped his bleary eyes. He considered retaliating, but Pip had taught him that his mother would just lash out twice as forcefully, which would invariably lead to a fight. I’m calling the police station tomorrow. They won’t enjoy having to answer to me.
When you call, may I be there? Actually, I need to say a few harsh words myself.
Their hazel eyes met.
With a nod, Krey allowed his mother to give him a back pat. Go to sleep. You must get a decent night’s rest.
Makena attempted a cheek kiss, but Krey sidestepped her and hurried to his bedroom.
Makena grinned, then giggled at the sound of his door closing. Krey had always been a challenging and gloomy person who let his rage speak for him. As mother and son, though, they had never been closer. She prayed that their bond would only strengthen and that Krey would realize one day that she was there for him through everything, no matter what life threw at him.
It took about sixty minutes for the chilly air from outdoors to cool Krey down. Every fifteen minutes, he checked the time and thought of Pip. After concluding that Pip had become immersed in a book, he quickly turned on the fan.
Taking off his t-shirt, Krey tossed it to the ground. He moved the duvet to Pip’s side of the bed and gazed at the ceiling with a dejected expression.
Krey quickly felt more at ease thanks to the fan, and he soon fell asleep without having any dreams.
Even in his slumber, Krey must have known that Pip was still not asleep. Whenever he turned to embrace his human, Pip was never there.
After a while Krey roused himself from his slumber to glance at his watch. Krey narrowed his eyes, making sure the timing was accurate. He even verified with his phone that Pip was still not in bed at four in the morning.
Although Pip had slept off at the library on a few occasions, he always turned to Krey for solace when he was feeling down. Krey wasn’t fond of Pip for choosing to live alone for so long. It was a remarkably unusual behavior for him.
He pondered on his mother’s words. Please allow him to be depressed. Krey got out of bed, shaking his head. He murmured, I can’t,
and padded drowsily down the hallway. The squeak of the steps to the attic made him cringe. Both the light and the speaker were on, playing Pip’s favorite soft music for reading romance novels.
Immediately, Krey’s gaze settled on his partner, who was laying on the couch with an open book propped against his chest. Pip was sound asleep, snoring lightly. With a sigh, Krey bowed to him. He adored Pip’s contented, slumbering face. Normally, Pip would appear adorable and naive even in his dreams, but right now he was frowning a little bit.
When Krey took the book off his chest and attempted to raise Pip without awakening him, Pip almost immediately shot out of his sleep.
Krey said, It’s okay,
in the most subdued tone he could manage. I’m just carrying you to bed.
Pip calmed down upon seeing those concerned brown eyes. He whispered, I didn’t mean to fall asleep up here,
and put his arms around Krey’s broad shoulders to carry him. Pip felt fatigue take hold of him in an instant. When they got to the bedroom, Krey lay him down on the bed because he was practically asleep.
The room had a pleasant temperature thanks to the fan. They could cling to each other without getting too hot in the sufficiently cold chamber.
Krey cherished the times when they could just cuddle up in each other’s arms and go to sleep. Before Krey could wish Pip a restful sleep, he had fallen asleep. Despite everything, he continued to kiss Pip’s forehead and said, sleep well now, for me.
With Pip by his side, Krey slept through the night more soundly, but when he attempted to put his arms around his nonexistent mate, he was startled awake once more. Krey looked at the clock. Only 6:45 a.m. had passed. Neither Pip nor the bathroom contained him. Pippor,
Krey murmured as she got out of bed once more to search for him.
Krey smelt the air as he opened the door to his bedroom. He could almost smell Pip’s perfume, but it wasn’t the lovely scent he usually emitted. Pip smelled apprehensive, tense, and anxious. Krey hurried to the library, forgotting about the sleep he had missed.
With a snarl, Krey shot up the steps, making Pip jump. Pippor, why do you feel so-
he said sharply.
Pip shut his laptop hard. Pip was unable to contain his expressions, much like a guilty dog. His lips pursed, he looked up at Krey as if he was expecting him to yell.
Krey did nothing but squint. What are you doing?
Nothing.
Krey took a step toward her. What are you looking at on your laptop at quarter to seven on a Sunday morning?
N-Nothing.
Show me.
Pip gave a headshake.
We don’t keep secrets from each other.
No, but I am allowed privacy.
Krey gazed at the laptop with curiosity. "You were really agitated by whatever you were looking at. I sensed it. You were in distress.
Pip’s remorse kept mounting until he was unable to look at Krey. I just… I need to know.
Aware? You know what?
With a groan, Pip moved his laptop in Krey’s direction. About that.
With authorization, Krey carefully opened the laptop, apprehensive about what he may discover.
Pip cautiously observed him. He picked at his fingernails while Krey slumped in defeat. He navigated through page after page of news items on Pip’s parents’ passing.
Why are you doing this to yourself?
Glancing through the most recent news item on Pippor Monty and Mark Gummary’s disappearance that was published only a few months earlier, Krey questioned.
I’m not sure,
Pip muttered. The not knowing has always hurt, but now… I don’t know why I can’t stop thinking about it.
Those officers, they’ve gotten inside your head.
Krey’s weary eyes grew gloomy.
Maybe they have.
Pip swallowed his sorrowful heart. I believe I now require to know. Someone needs to be aware of the actual events.
Pip, I don’t think-
Please Krey.
Krey could feel the frenzy in Pip’s gaze twisting inside him. "I need this to
