Preface
The American Episcopal Church, as part of the Anglican Communion headed by the Archbishop of Canterbury, has in its Prayer Book a Burial Liturgy, a reference to the word Jerusalem. The priest precedes the pall bearers in carrying the body of the deceased to the cemetery from the church and says or sings the following anthem in which the last verse goes like this:
"Into paradise may the angels lead you. At your coming may the martyrs mourn you, and bring you into the holy city, Jerusalem."
Why a mention of Jerusalem in our Christian liturgy? For what reason is the name so highly respected even today, as if it were like heaven itself? Well, over the centuries that name has indicated a holy site of all Western religions: Hebrew, Christian, or Muslim.
Historically, for the Hebrews, King David in 1000BC conquered the city named Jerusalem from the Jebusites and made it his capital for the Hebrew nation. That city produced in due time the mighty moral prophets and their writings like those of Isaiah and Elijah. Many of the psalms were written during the time of David and King Solomon which are also part of the Christian liturgy.
For Christians, Jerusalem was where Jesus the Jew was declared guilty of heresy and treason, was tried, crucified and was raised from the dead, as our members believe. For the Muslims Saladin the Great, Sultan of Syria and Egypt, conquered Jerusalem in 1187 AD and that initiated many Palestinians to become part of the Muslim faith.
Over the centuries there were several extended battles between Muslims and Christians claiming Jerusalem as theirs, until the World Wars of the 20th century. In the First World War the British conquered Jerusalem and occupied it until the Second World War. Then, the murder of six million Jews by Chancellor Adolph Hitler of Germany during World War II brought many escaping Jews from various countries into Jerusalem in 1945 when the modern Israeli nation was born.
Today Jews still dominate the nation even after Hamas leaders from the Gaza Strip on October 7th 2023 wickedly attacked innocent and unsuspecting, even unarmed Jews on the street, in their homes or at a special musical celebration nearby. They especially picked on women and sexually tortured, mutilated and raped many, beheading some, burning others alive in front of their families. They cut off parts of their bodies and burned many old ladies slowly while still alive. Worst of all, wild men murdered and tortured screaming children in front of mothers and fathers, a massacre of the innocent that no Israelite could ever forget. Now there is a war between Israel and all the proxies of the nation of Iran who it is believed were financed by that country. Earlier in time Iran had imprisoned all American embassy staff in a revolution against its president that placed a Mullah named Ayatollah Khomeini in charge of the nation.

Chapter One
Decisions
Joseph Benjamin Ashur was born in Manhattan, New York City, the son of his father, Samuel, and of his mother, Abigail . After years of schooling and as a graduate of Columbia Law School, Joseph found employment at Malache Brothers. This was a small firm located at 14th and Park Avenue, where Joseph hoped to make the firm more profitable since he was filled with ideas from law school of how to expand a small firm into a large one. His girlfriend, Sarah, was also a lawyer but, compared to him, she was in a much larger, quite plush law firm , and her family was also more affluent than his own. Yet, he really liked her and respected her talents.
After reading of the horror raining down upon Israel by Hamas’ crazy militants, however, he became tempted by an all-consuming notion of leaving the new law firm to travel to Israel to help his people of heritage fight Hamas. One of the first things he would have to do would be to inform his parents, but knowing that his father would probably oppose his decision, he decided to tell his girlfriend first and even ask her to join him. Consequently, he invited her to dinner in upper Manhattan, not far from the Cosmopolitan Club on East 66th Street, In fact, this was right across the street on Lexington Avenue. For their date the two were seated in a cozy inside corner of the French restaurant, enjoying their chat with each other after a long and often hard-pressed day at their firms. Then, after dinner while having a last drink: Joseph, a pricy scotch on the rocks and Sarah, a glass of Monterey chardonnay, her favorite. He decided to make her aware of his decision to travel to Jerusalem and volunteer himself to the leaders fighting Hamas. He quietly asked if she would consider joining him. She stared at him in disbelief and quickly formed her decision which was definitely no. In fact, she asked,
Are you crazy? I have so many cases in my firm to solve that I could never leave! If you want to go, I think that is great of you; in fact I admire you for thinking about that! You could help the Prime Minister with all your good legal knowledge. I mean, what is your education for if not just to earn us some money? Well, here is an opportunity to do something more in life. But you have responsibilities here too in your legal position, so many things to do first or maybe now, so when? But as I said, I think you are a real mensch to think about going to the heavenly city of Jerusalem, even if, once there, the PM or his friends send you to another city like Tel Aviv or into some very unholy place. I would hope he or the generals will not ignore you. What do you think? That is, if you go, as you say you are.
Looking disappointed, he replied,
Well, that is a shock. You seemed so happy that Benjamin Netanyahu is now the Prime Minister of Israel. I thought you might be interested. But your cases must come first, I suppose; yes, I am going one way or another.
He took a sip of his drink and then began to tell her of another reason why he decided to go to Jerusalem.
"I have an aunt in Israel that I did not know lived there, but I have recently found out from my Mom that she was taken hostage by the terrorists! I
