Postcolonialism as a theoretical cogitation is bracketed under cultural studies. Postcolonial studies in literature refers to the narratives from or on the nations that were colonised previously. The history is such that even countries like America and Great Britain were colonised before the transformation in the position and outlook from colonised to coloniser. Yet, the narratives of Great Britain or even America do not fall under the categorisation of postcolonial studies. This is because of their elevation to the status of super power and big brother. Given this context what remains the logic behind this nomenclature. For the sake of simpler understanding, any country colonised by European countries, particularly Great Britain is referred to as a colonised country. This will constitute India, Middle East, Africa, Carribean Islands, Latin America, Australia and Sri Lanka among others. It can be easily said that Europe as a continent, invaded then subdued rest of the continents in the world.

The history is such that even countries like America and Great Britain were colonised before the transformation in the position and outlook from colonised to coloniser. Yet, the narratives of Great Britain or even America do not fall under the categorisation of postcolonial studies. This is because of their elevation to the status of super power and big brother. Given this context what remains the logic behind this nomenclature. For the sake of simpler understanding, any country colonised by European countries, particularly Great Britain is referred to as a colonised country. This will constitute India, Middle East, Africa, Carribean Islands, Latin America, Australia and Sri Lanka among others. It can be easily said that Europe as a continent, invaded then subdued rest of the continents in the world.

    The period of colonisation is a bloody and gruesome remainder in the histories of colonised countries. Particularly in India as the period of colonisation was for 350 long years leading to systematic plundering of wealth, exploitation of labour, extraction of minerals, subjugation of thought process, ridiculing of rituals and replacement of hegemony. This led to tyranny, bloodshed and long struggle for freedom. The value and belief system of India was broken to shackles but the worst was spreading of mass delusion that Indians are inferior in every aspect from Education, literature, religious beliefs, systems, practises to technological and scientific advancements. While India as a whole is still working on changing the narratives of this mass delusional construction created with only motive of conquering and ruling the country, Literature as an institution aid in breaking the pseudo hegemonic belief that colonisers have created.

    The 70 years period from 1947 till date has been an opportunity to reclaim the mindset, to verify the history and rethink the narratives spread. During the period of colonisation, the colonisers divided India among themselves and ruled it region by region. In order to do so they subjugated the already existing rulers either by killing them or by labelling them as criminals and sending away to prisons. While these were physical, the literature, arts and culture of India were completely undermined and shunned away. This imperialistic attitude impacted the value of the country itself greatly. It is with non-fiction like The Discovery of India, which is a physical and psychological journey of a freedom fighter and it showcased the philosophy and grandeur of the nation India. It was written by Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of independent India.

    The long years of servitude by colonised country, coupled with violence not just affected the economic conditions, but psyche of people as well. Some theorists like Ngugi Wa Thiongo in his seminal text calls for Decolonising the mind. While his text focuses on letting go completely of the foreign languages and a retrace into regional languages, it may not solve the purpose. If the expression of hatred has to reach, it has to be in the tongue that coloniser can understand, this Calibanesque attitude can be seen in writings of postcolonial writers today. They have learnt the language to express the reality to people and condemn the coloniser for doing injustice to human kind. The people in colonised country require decolonisation of minds not just in term of language, but in every other aspect including finance.

    While the colonisation era is over, today what people encounter is reverse colonisation. Wherein in search of better lifestyle and living conditions, people flock towards coloniser’s countries to work again in servitude to white sahibs. While this is not the case for every individual who migrates, the general idea of servitude or West is best has not changed much. While technically this seeking for better opportunities can get a white labelled term like globalisation, and showcase how world is a global village. There is one more method of reverse colonisation, where the colonised gets addicted to the culture, technology and other aspects of colonisers’ life and make it a part of their lifestyle in their own country. This is another form of mass delusion that creates an illusion, that the products and culture of coloniser is better than that of one’s own culture. This has been categorised into five categories by Arjun Appadurai, where Ethnoscape refers to migration of people, technoscape indicate transference of technology, financescape of money and value of money, Mediascape of news and information and finally the migration of ideas and thought process is termed as Ideoscape.
