Born of Snow - James Young

    Prologue

Mike's Mad Music Avendale, VA - (May 2017)

The streets were peaceful on 5th Street in downtown Avendale. The city charters drove on by to their next destination, a local businessman was on his phone heading to the local law firm, and sailors walking from the local restaurants to head back to port.

Amongst the peace, a little boy dances up and down in front of a local music shop. After seeing rising star, Matt Luther, he wanted to learn to play guitar just like him. His dad juggled the decision of letting him learn all night, but he decided to let him give it a try.

The interior of the store had rows of drums against the walls, racks of sticks, music sheets, and all the walls were lined with dozens of different guitars. From acoustic to electric, Mad Mike's motto was to have crazy deals and have any string of your dreams. Mike himself was a young, 30-year-old entrepreneur with a passion for music and wanted to invest in anyone who wanted to learn and appreciate how to play.

Daddy, here are the acoustics! The little boy called in glee.

His dad dragged his feet through the store feeling out of place. Now, son, don't start this because some celebrity told you to. The father warned.

No, Dad. I just think his guitar is cool and I love his music. Maybe I can write my own songs one day. He shook his head and watched his son start staring at all the different guitars.

Good day, Folks. Mike greeted. Need help finding anything?

Well, my son is uh... The dad started to say until he was quickly interrupted by his son.

I want a guitar like Matt Luther! The little boy declared loudly. His dad shrugged in embarrassment.

Mike laughed and walked him dead center of the acoustic guitar wall. Then you are looking for a Jasmine Dreadnought. A fine choice. He pulled it down and let the little boy hold it.

    This thing is huge!

Mike laughed. How about this one right here then? Mike suggested as he pulled down a similar guitar cattycornered from it. This, believe it or not, is called the Junior Dreadnought. It's meant for players, like yourself, who are smaller in stacher. As you get taller, I have no doubt you'll easily be able to upgrade to the real thing.

The little boy's eyes lit like a Christmas tree. Thank-you, Mister!

Mike reached for the guitar, but he didn't immediately pull it down. Once your dad gives the ok, kid, it's all yours. The little boy looked longingly at his dad. He simply shook his head and nodded. That's all I needed. He pulled the guitar down and the little boy held it close like his life depended on it.

After paying and putting his new guitar in the case, the man and little boy went to the car. As the dad reached for his keys, he perked up to a commotion across the street. Suddenly, a bunch of guys busted out of a nearby store shooting.

Son! Get in the car and get down! The Father called out. BANG! The pang of the guitar case flopped to the ground. Son! No! The dad ran to his son's lifeless body and held him close. No...please...stay with me...no! He yelled into the air. He looked up and his eyes met a man who suddenly ran the same direction as the robbers. The dad sat there broken and sobbing. Someone help! Please help!

    Chapter 1

    Shoreline of Avendale

Living by the East Coast has always been a blessing to behold from the shores or fishing docks. The glimmering light shining on the literal ocean of blue is mesmerizing. The smell of salty sea air is clear as day from nearly any given place in Avendale.

When the local forecasters warned us last summer of a potential thick, and powdery winter, the entire city erupted in panic. Beach cities like ours weren't built to handle several days of snow, let alone an entire winter season of it. Stores began lining the aisles with: hand warmers, ice scrapers, rock salt, and a myriad of other winter gear.

I, on the other hand, am happily ignoring all that chaos to sit by the shoreline on a long stretch of riprap. The seagulls squawking near me flew around the fairgrounds to try and catch some food from local restaurants. The frozen waves crashing on the rocks under my feet sent a chilled breeze my way, but I was too lost in my own thoughts to really notice.

My name is Max Damon. For the past several years, I have been fighting against a satanic cult called The Society, who sought to take over the United States. They almost succeeded when they triggered The Day of Rebirth, by nearly overtaking all of Avendale. After a long time of running, the cult was finally stopped earlier this year, but at a hefty price. Friends, comrades, and worst of all...family.

My mother, rest her soul, was a United States Navy Admiral that helped in the background to keep people alive from The Society. In the end, she gave up her life so my older brother and I could escape and help finish the fight. The broken look in her eyes mixed with sadness and pride haunts me months later.

In the end of this chaos, Avendale was left scared beyond all reasoning. The city came together and helped rebuild most of what was lost, but the emotional damage and the lives that were no longer with us took its toll on us. We all felt it and I feel like we always will.

As I continued lost in thought, I felt a light tap on my shoulders that shook me from my day dreaming. I jumped from my spot to see my little sister hovering over me with a warm smile and a cup of steaming coffee. Even on this cold December day, I could still smell the enticing aroma of Colombian black coffee.

You look like you could use a pick-me-up. Taylor greeted with a smile and an understanding look. Care for some company?

Isn't that usually my line? We both laughed as she passed me my cup. Immediately, my fridged hands began to warm with the touch of burning hot coffee. Doubtless, Taylor must have been by the new coffee shop, Bliss Grounds. We talked about going once or twice, but time seems to keep getting away from us.

"So, help me understand. We make it out here to visit Melissa as Chris, your gig with Matt is going great, you are married to an amazing woman,
