Crafting a Fantasy - Sapphic Shelley

    CHAPTER 1

The air hung heavy with the rich, earthy smell of sawdust, carried by beams of sunlight that filtered through the large windows of Hartman & Co. Carpentry. The golden rays illuminated the workshop floor, casting long shadows across the worn wooden boards. This family business was tucked away in a tranquil corner of the town, where the symphony of power tools and rhythmic hammering could be heard throughout the day.

It was a place steeped in tradition and pride, where generations of skilled artisans had poured their hearts and souls into every piece of wood that passed through their hands. The walls were adorned with tools and finished projects, each one a testament to the dedication and passion that flowed through this bustling workshop.

In the center of the bustling workshop, amidst the clatter of tools and whirring of machines, stood the apprentice carpenter, Jaqueline Jackie Hartman. Despite her young age of 19, she exuded a confidence and skill that rivaled even the most experienced craftsmen. Her dark hair was cropped short, revealing the strong line of her jaw and emphasizing her bright green eyes that seemed to sparkle with determination.

As she worked on her latest project, her hands moved with a grace and precision that could only come from years of practice. She ran them over the smooth surface of the wood, feeling every bump and groove until it met her standards of perfection.

Jackie's passion for carpentry radiated from every pore; from the way she held herself with a confident stance, to the way her eyes narrowed in concentration as she worked. And when she finally stepped back to admire her progress, a satisfied smile graced her lips, knowing that she had once again created something beautiful with her own two hands.

Jackie's hands were greasy and she was focused on tightening a bolt when a familiar voice called out, interrupting her concentration. She looked up to see her brother Declan, who had taken over the family business, leaning against the doorframe of the workshop. The smell of sawdust clung to his beard as he gave her a sly smile. You're looking good, sis, he said.

Jackie grinned back at him and wiped the sweat from her brow with a rag. Thanks, Dec. Just trying to make sure this piece is perfect before Marissa comes by.

Declan nodded in understanding and pushed off the doorframe, walking over to examine Jackie's work. She'll be impressed, no doubt.

Declan's smirk twisted into a condescending sneer as he looked down at Jackie. Marissa again? Do you worship the ground she walks on?

Jackie's face flushed with anger and embarrassment, her fists clenching at her sides. She couldn't deny the admiration she had for Marissa Thompson, her teacher and mentor in woodworking. Marissa was a true master of her craft, and Jackie longed to reach that level of skill.

Stop it, Declan, she snapped, her voice trembling with emotion. I admire her, okay? Is that so wrong?

Declan's laughter filled the room as he patted Jackie's head like a child. Relax, little sis. It was just a joke, he said, his tone dripping with sarcasm. But seriously, you've got some talent. I'll give you that.

A small smile tugged at the corners of Jackie's mouth as she tried to brush off his mocking words. Deep down, she knew her brother was proud of her, but sometimes his teasing hit too close to home.

As Jackie forced herself to focus on her work, she couldn't shake the all-consuming thoughts of Marissa. Every time the woman crossed her mind, her heart raced with an almost unbearable intensity. It wasn't just her incredible skills or commanding presence that drew
