About the Author
Deborah Tracy, MSC has worked with children and families for over 25 years. Her experience with families has given her a wealth of insight into the struggles individuals face finding their True North. During a conversation with her twin grandsons she was inspired to write this workbook to help others discover what they believe and why. Deborah continues to work with families in a supervisory capacity.
Chapter 1 - Discovering Your True North
True North= The guiding principles within you that lead you; your beliefs determine your integrity, self-discipline, loyalty, responsibility, honesty, patience, etc.
This workbook is designed to stimulate your critical thinking skills to discover your True North. When we examine our daily living practices, we realize that our actions, reactions, emotions, and sense of self are driven by our beliefs. If we KNOW our True North, our journey in life will be far less confusing, with more productive years and less wasted time on the wrong course. Once we establish our own belief system, we can confidently chart our way through life, following our True North.
The purpose of this workbook is not to tell you what to believe but to encourage you to explore your principles, values, and beliefs, which combine to develop your True North. By completing this workbook, my hope is that you will gain a clear understanding of who you are and what you believe. My desire for you is that you will be able to see that you are the culmination of all your experiences, your interactions with people, your cultural influences, and even experiences you don’t remember. Every person and experience in your life has contributed to forming a belief and a core value in you. Again, this workbook is not designed to tell you what to believe but to challenge you to discover your own beliefs. Question what you hear, research what someone tells you, and find your truth.
Many of us have wasted years by following people we thought had superior knowledge or had discovered the answers to life. These people have formed a belief system that suits them and their way of life and then proclaim they have found the key
to life for everyone. However, what is right for one person is not necessarily right for all. In the examples below, you will see that the ideology or values of some people are self-serving and dangerous. Let’s take a deeper dive into when our belief systems are formed.
Although we are not consciously aware of this taking place, we are constantly taking in information that surrounds us, which forms a belief. From our first day of life, we are influenced by our caregivers and early childhood experiences. By becoming aware that everyone and every experience in our life makes an imprint on us, either consciously or unconsciously, we can then look critically at that information. Normally, we are not consciously aware that this process is taking place, so we do not know when to filter the truth from misinformation.
