I am a retired art teacher living in West Yorkshire with my husband, and son and large ginger cat called Garfield. I started writing short stories when my daughters went to university; many of them featured cats, and Garfield is the inspiration for Dottie’s cat Amber.Although four of my stories have been read by BBC Radio Leeds, The Cauldron Cup is my first children’s book.

Chapter 1.
The Search for Amber Begins
Dottie Doolittle was worried and upset. She had not seen her ginger cat Amber for a few days. It was unusual for her pet to disappear for this length of time.
Amber! Amber! Here kitty, kitty…
Dottie called. She rattled a box of cat biscuits and waited, listening for any sign of her in the gardens nearby. She called again and again, but Amber was nowhere to be seen. After shouting several more times, Dottie went inside on her own.
The house was so quiet without her pet, and Dottie felt rather lonely. She sat in her rocking chair and closed her eyes.
Think. What can I do? There must be something.
The rocking motion was soothing, and she decided to make some posters to display around the local area. She would need pens, paper and sticky tape, maybe some drawing pins or small nails and a hammer. If she started now, she would be able to distribute them to neighbours and the surrounding neighbourhood before it got dark.
Racing to her cupboard, she ransacked it as she searched for the items she needed for her task. In her excitement, she didn’t look at what she was throwing out.
Bang!
A book on practical witchcraft hit the floor, followed by a soft thud as a pineapple-shaped cushion plopped down close beside it. A glass vase landed on the mat and rolled under the seat of the rocking chair.
Dottie reached for an almost-empty bottle of rhubarb cough syrup, sniffed it before squinting inside to see how much was left and automatically emptying the final dregs down her throat. Still tasty, she thought.
Her sticky fingers now found an over-filled box of nails covered with the cough mixture. Her hand slid across, knocking the loose top off, and some of the nails fell to the bottom of the cupboard. Dottie grabbed a torn tablecloth she had meant to throw out and used it to mop up the spilt syrup. As she screwed it into a ball, some of the nails became hidden in the fabric. They bit deeply into her fingers, and she yelled in pain.
Ouch. What the…?
Looking down she saw her hands were covered in blood.
Bother!
Rocking back on her heels, she looked around for her wand. Unfortunately, she couldn’t hold it securely because her hands were so sticky. She waved it, trying to perform her spell, but it dropped from her grip and the spell was misplaced. The first-aid dressings she had intended for her fingers attached themselves to the dinner plates on the dresser above her.
Don’t be so silly!
Dottie shouted crossly. My fingers are bleeding. Just look at them!
She held them up, and spots of blood dropped onto the rug she was kneeling on.
Come here!
she ordered the dressings, and like a group of tiny pink bats, they flew to her hands, placing themselves where they were needed.
After that, she was more careful.
Soon, she had what she needed to make the posters, but what should she write? Tentatively, she began:
