Cody Wolf peered anxiously into the woods. From the side of the road, he could make out little in the darkness, but heard plenty. Branches twitched like restless spirits. Leaves rustled, seeming to whisper in dry voices. He listened, holding his breath. What were they trying to say, he wondered?

The thought of going into the woods at night had always freaked him out. The woods was an overgrown, wild place filled with twisting turns and uneven ground. Anyone could get lost there in the dark. Cody's first impulse was to turn around and follow the road home. It was the safe, easy way to go.

    Safe, easy, and slow.

And he really needed to hurry.

Tonight was Cody's thirteenth birthday and he was late. A party waited for him at home. By now his parents would be starting to worry. Relatives would be glancing at the time on their phones and asking where he was. He needed to get home as quickly as possible. Cutting through the woods would save time—if he didn't become lost or sprain an ankle tripping over a stump. He hesitated, trying to decide.

What are we waiting for? his older brother Brendan asked. You missed my thirteenth birthday party. Don’t miss yours. Let’s cut through the woods. He paused to grin. Or are you chicken?

Cody tried to ignore his brother and squinted harder into the trees. Darkness stared back and fearful thoughts taunted him. Beware, Cody. Stay out. Don’t even think about going in there.

He suspected he should listen, but the lure of the party was too strong. Cutting through the woods was the fastest way home. It was the fastest way to cake and ice cream, to presents, and to cards stuffed with cash. As a bonus, cutting through the woods would also shut up his brother.

Cody took a breath and nodded decisively. He had made up his mind.

I’m not chicken, he said. Come on. We're going. Without waiting for his brother to respond, he stepped off the roadside and started hiking through the grass toward the trees.

Brendan clapped his hands together, impressed. You’re a big dog now, bro, not a little pup.

Whatever, Cody grunted. I just want to open presents before my next birthday. Let's hurry.

    Woof! Brendan barked playfully.

The boys tromped into the woods. Fallen leaves crunched under their feet. Shadows deepened where the full moon's light couldn't reach the ground. Cody grimaced. The woods, he decided, was every bit as creepy as he had imagined it would be.

For several minutes the brothers walked without talking. About halfway through the woods Brendan grabbed Cody’s arm.

Freeze! Brendan hissed. Did you hear that?

Cody stopped and frowned. Hear what? he asked. He listened but heard nothing more than he had earlier—the wind, his own breathing, other unidentifiable but normal nighttime sounds. Was his brother trying to play a trick on him?

    I don't hear— he started.

Brendan touched a finger to his lips for silence. In the moonlight, his normally brown eyes looked yellow.

Was that a trick too? Some kind of optical illusion in the moonlight?

Stay here, Brendan said. I’m going to check it out.

Before Cody could react, Brendan turned and loped back the way they’d come. He disappeared into the darkness as if swallowed.

Long, cold minutes passed. Cody shivered and stuffed his hands into the pockets of his hoodie. He glanced up, but the sky was empty. Even the moon had abandoned him, hidden behind a cloud he couldn't see. Cody was as alone as he had ever been.

Alone in the dark of the woods at night.

Sudden frustration warmed his face. Cold, alone, and abandoned weren't how he wanted to spend his birthday! He couldn’t take the wait or the loneliness anymore. He sucked in a breath.

Brendan! he called, long and loud, almost a howl. He was surprised by how much he sounded like a wolf—a Cody Wolf. The thought might have made him chuckle any other time.

When his brother didn’t respond, he drew in another breath to shout again. He opened his mouth and—

You don’t need to yell, Brendan said behind him.

Cody's frustration transformed into anger. How dare his brother vanish and sneak up on him! No one was supposed to be scaring him in the woods. Not on his birthday! He turned sharply, his mouth ready with sharper words.

What he saw stole the words from his lips.

    Brendan wasn’t Brendan. Not anymore.

A wolf-like creature stood in front of Cody on two legs. Shaggy brown fur covered its body. Fangs as thick as fingers jutted from its canine face.

Happy birthday, bro, the creature growled in a familiar voice. Cody staggered in jaw-dropping shock. The voice was deeper but unmistakable. It belonged to his brother Brendan.

    His brother the monster.

    His brother the werewolf.

Cody was too scared to scream. He shoved the Brendan-wolf in the chest, spun, and ran. Home was through the woods and past the neighborhood playground. It was less than half a mile, but light years away when a werewolf was behind him.

What’s the matter, bro? Brendan half-barked and half-laughed. "You always wanted a surprise party on your birthday. Well … surprise!"

    Cody ran faster.

He broke from the trees minutes later, heart pounding in his throat. He was covered in burrs, scratches, and sweat. Welts reddened his skin where branches had swatted his face and hands. But Cody didn’t notice. He felt almost nothing. He was numb to everything except one fact.

    His brother was a werewolf.

A glance over his shoulder told him that Brendan was close, maybe ten yards behind. He ran effortlessly on four legs like an animal. A long red tongue dangled from the side of his open mouth.

This can’t be happening! Cody panted in disbelief. Wait until their parents found out!

As he raced past the playground, he pumped his arms and legs harder. He was on the
