    FADE IN:

1  EXT. PINEY POINT PARK - MORNING 1

WE SEE the POINT LOOKOUT LIGHTHOUSE towering over the POTOMAC RIVER and the BAY. Ominous dark clouds move across the sky.

This is a seaside community with lots of land, trees, water, marinas, and waterfront restaurants. But there are bad areas.

2  EXT. SHOPPING CENTER - MOMENTS LATER 2

People are going in and out of the grocery store. A few pushing carts of grocery bags. WE HEAR thunder brewing.

WE SEE the CONVENIENCE STORE where BENNIE CALLAHAN died in the hands of the police, where there are used candles, fresh and dead flowers, photos and paintings of him around the entrance of the store. Store owner, MARIAN BREWER, 39, a skinny but physically strong man, gets out of his small car and walks to the door with his key and opening it, ignoring the flowers and candles around his feet.

TWO SAINT MARY’S COUNTY POLICE CRUISERS -

Parked side by side in the middle of the mostly empty parking lot. OFFICER DANIELS, early 30’s, and OFFICER PELLERMAN, early 30’s, both Caucasian, are having their usual, pleasant morning conversation as they sip on cups of coffee.

From out of nowhere, Officer Pellerman’s head is nearly blown off his shoulders, some of it splattering into Officer Daniels face.

Officer Daniels rushes out of his squad car, wiping blood from his face, all over the place disoriented, medically assisting Officer Pellerman. He puts his mouth to his shoulder mic.

    OFFICER DANIELS

(screaming in horror) Shots fired, shots fired! Officer down, I repeat, officer down...

    FADE OUT.

3  SUBTITLE: ONE YEAR LATER 3

4  EXT. PINEY POINT MARINA - MORNING 4

Big boats, small boats, houseboats and floating homes line the docks of the marina, sitting on the Saint Mary’s River. WE SEE Dock master ISRAEL ANTHONY, 62, a short, muscular, sensitive man, walking the dock, checking boats.

    JAMI’S FLOATING HOME

The 3 room floating home with a roof deck sits at the end of the dock, with a beautiful view of the river.

    5  INT. JAMI’S FLOATING HOME/BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS 5

OFFICER JAMI POOLE, 21, African-American, small, petite, hard working, career focused, wakes up, getting out of bed to get ready for work. She grabs the remote from the bedside table

and turns on the TV, the morning news.

FEMALE NEWS REPORTER (O.S.) Crime is on the steady rise here in the small town of Great Mills, one year after the murder of Officer Douglas Pellerman...

Jami turns down the TV and heads into the bathroom.

FEMALE NEWS REPORTER (CONT’D) Which coincidentally happened on the birthday of Bennie Callahan...

    6  INT. JAMI'S FLOATING HOME/BATHROOM - MOMENTS LATER 6

Jami is taking a shower. WE HEAR her phone ringing.

    7  INT. JAMI'S FLOATING HOME - MOMENTS LATER 7

Jami walks out of the bathroom, still wet from the shower, in her robe, drying her hair with a towel. She stops, staring at the side by side photos of herself, and her father—both in their rookie police uniforms—on the wall.

Her ringing phone wakes her from her stare. She grabs her cup of coffee from the kitchen counter and sits down at the dining room table, answering her phone.

    JAMI Hey, mom.

    INTERCUT TO:

    8  INT. MONICA’S HOUSE - CONTINUOUS 8

MONICA POOLE, 45, small woman, church going, anxiety riddled, is sitting on the bed in her nurse’s uniform, putting on her socks, making her morning call to her daughter.

    MONICA

    You about to head in?

    JAMI Yep. You?

    A beat.

    MONICA

You know they’re talking about it all over the news.

    JAMI

    Officer Pellerman. I know.

Monica is now putting on shoes.

    MONICA

The one year anniversary is next week. You know that, right?

Jami nods, sipping on coffee. A beat.

    JAMI

    You thought I forgot?

    MONICA

    Right on Bennie Callahan’s birthday.

There is concerned silence between the two.

    JAMI

My head is always on a swivel, ma.

    MONICA

Just thinking about your father. As I always do this time of the morning.

Jami sips on her coffee, staring off with vengeance.

    JAMI

    (looks at dad’s photo)

There’s still hope I’ll one day see that bastard get what he deserves.

Hearing that worries Monica. A beat.

    MONICA

I just want you to pray. Learn to forgive. So you can have peace.

    JAMI

I’ll have peace when that bastard is in prison... or in the ground.

Monica stands, ready to get to work, worried for Jami.

    MONICA

    (slight grin)

    So much like your father.

Jami finishes her coffee, gets up and heads for the bedroom.

    MONICA (CONT’D)

Be safe. Call me later. Love you.

    JAMI

    Love you, moms.

    9 INT. JAMI'S FLOATING HOME/BEDROOM - MOMENTS LATER 9

Jami is dressed in her uniform, about to go on duty, when she glances up at the TV and sees POLICE CHIEF EDWARDS, 38, Caucasian, short, skinny but stern, standing at the podium, looking out at reporters, concerned.

    CHIEF EDWARDS

We plan to be on heavy guard next week on Bennie Callahan’s birthday. Just in case.

    REPORTER (O.S.)

Can you promise the safety of your police officers? And do you think last year’s killing of Officer Pellerman has become a ritual of sorts?

    CHIEF EDWARDS

We can never assure anything, and that’s unfortunate. But all of our police officers here in Saint Mary’s know... everyday is not promised... that we will go home safely to our families.

Jami turns the TV off and tosses the remote onto the bed. She stares at the TV in a daze as if it’s still on.

10  EXT. PINEY POINT MARINA - MOMENTS LATER 10

Jami leaves her floating home and steps fast down the dock, passing Israel, who’s pumping out boats.

    JAMI

    Good morning, Israel.

    ISRAEL

Have a safe one, Officer Poole.

Jami gets into her squad car and drives off out of the marina.

11  EXT. FAST FOOD RESTAURANT - LATER - AFTERNOON 11

Jami is walking out with a cup of coffee and a bag a breakfast sandwiches when MELVIN, 33, down on his luck, infested with alcohol, walks up to Jami, smiling, happy to see her.

    MELVIN

    (nervous now)

Hey, Miss Poole... I mean, Officer Poole.

Jami glares at him as if he’s in trouble, and his eyes grow big, with him thinking he is in trouble.

    JAMI

    (digging in her pockets)

I’m about to bust you up, Melvin.

Melvin is so scared. It makes Jami fight off a grin.

    MELVIN

    Officer Poole, what I do?

    JAMI

    (disappointed)

You’ve been buying alcohol with my money.

    MELVIN

    No, I haven’t Officer Poole—

    JAMI

    You’re lying, Melvin.

    MELVIN

    No, I... I promise, I...

    Jami hands Melvin money anyway.

    JAMI

Go in there and get something to eat, right now. You need to eat something.

Melvin is hungry, but he gives alcohol a thought. Then he notices how serious Jami is. A beat.

    JAMI (CONT’D)

    (playful grin)

I’m going to stand here and watch you go in there and get something to eat. Go on.

Melvin immediately goes inside to order food.

Jami is about to get into the squad car when she peeps up and spots a sports car riding down the road with no front tag. Jami rushes into the squad car and goes after the sports car.
