    Ireland - Jamie Pedrazzoli

Dia Dhuit (Jee-uh Gwitch) or Hello.

My name is Seamus and I live in the capital city of Dublin in the Republic of Ireland (Eire). It is also called the Emerald Isle.

I speak English and Irish Gaelic.

In the city, many people drive cars, travel by bus, or walk on foot for transportation. The central area is small enough that walking is usually the most efficient way to get around the city.

The Dublin Region accounts for more than 25% of the country's total population. The estimated population in 2022 in Dublin is 1,256,000.

The total population in Ireland was 5.01 million in 2021.

97 % of Irish descendants are from early Irish tribes who intermarried with Celts, Vikings, and Normans.

Dublin got its name back when the Vikings called it Dubh Linn which means, black pool.

My city is called the largest small town in the world because it has very few tall buildings.

The Liffey River divides the city into the Northern and Southern areas. There are many bridges throughout Dublin.

HERE IS A PHOTO OF the Ha’Penny Bridge.

Before the Ha'penny Bridge was built there were seven ferries, operated by a man named William Walsh. He took people across the Liffey River. The ferries were in bad shape and Walsh was informed that he had to fix them or build a bridge. So a bridge was built but a fee was charged to cross it. The toll was increased from a penny to a ha'penny (1½ pence) but the toll was eventually dropped
