o, you want to know my story—where I come from, what I have done, and where I plan to go? Then let us start from the beginning. My name is Jifar Firmclaw, and as you can see, I am no human. I am what is known as dragonborn, hatched during the middle of deep winter in my hometown of Noble’s Watch. My mother was dragonborn, and her name was Sapphire Firmclaw. She was a great huntress who traveled the mountainside, hunting great beasts and protecting the local towns from monsters. I guess having sliver scales is the perfect way to stay concealed in these snow-filled mountains. But I digress.
My mother was a great huntress; however, skills alone cannot prevent all injuries. She had been tracking a small herd of white deer out in the high peaks and was ambushed by a werewolf. She managed to fight off the beast and even cut off its front paw, taking it as a trophy. However, the creature got a lucky hit and gashed her stomach. My mother was able to patch herself up, but she feared the risk of sickness and sought out the nearest town. For three days, she walked through deep snow and wailing winds until she reached the road outside of Noble’s Watch. That was when her fears came to fruition. Her wound had become infected, and after fighting through the winter’s wrath, she was found unconscious just under a mile from Noble’s Watch. By a stroke of good luck, the town blacksmith, a man named Clavin Whitewood, discovered her. In a few months, he had nursed her back to good health.
After that, the two fell in love and my mother decided it was time to settle down. They were married that summer, and I hatched the following winter. We were happy. However, it didn’t last. The werewolf that had ambushed my mother and lost his paw? He returned and brought friends. They wiped out the village. Those who did not turn were slaughtered. My father distracted them as best he could while my mother fled with me in her arms. I remember watching him fight off the werewolves over my mother’s shoulder as we ran into the mountains. That was the last we saw of him, but we could never return to find him as the howls were always near. We stayed on the move, and my mother taught me how to survive, how to hunt. After five years of hiding in the mountains, we discovered where those monsters slept, and we became the hunters. Slowly, over the next few years, we hunted them down one by one. Then we cornered the alpha that my mother had first encountered all those years before. Even with a paw missing, he was still a dangerous foe.
My mother fought him alone while I took a position on the cliffside with my bow and helped where I could. She leapt in and out of the monster’s reach, each time slashing him with her sword. With every slash of her blade and every puncture from my bow, the werewolf grew weaker and more desperate.
However, the creature was quick to adapt and kept us on our feet. He managed to deliver a blow to my mother. Knocked across the cave, she hit her head hard on the wall, dropping her sword. In an instant, the werewolf was closing in on her. I broke into a mad dash from my spot overlooking the chamber, snatched up my mother’s sword, and put myself between her and the beast. The werewolf seemed not to notice me until the last second. However, it was too late for him. He stopped, then looked down in time to see me pushing my mother’s blade through his heart. The werewolf was no more.
I rushed over to her, fearing the worst. She was awake, but severely injured. Besides a few gashes, the blow had managed to break her rib cage, and she was bleeding out from the inside. There was nothing I could do. The closest village was a month away, even if the werewolves had not destroyed the town. I felt that I had failed. It was the only time in my life I ever truly wept. I buried my mother at the mouth of the cave with that monster’s head on a stake, her final trophy before leaving this world. To this day, you can still find the grave marked on a nearby wall. The inscription reads, To Sapphire, the greatest huntress and mother a son could ask for. May she rest in peace.
As for the werewolf, his skull remains as a warning to those who seek to become monsters: they will be hunted down, and no mercy will be given.
And as for me, I kept my mother’s sword, which she had named Sapphire’s Flame for its light blue center and silver edges. Now I wander the world, hunting monsters and those who threaten to destroy loving families like my own—for no family should have to bury a loved one as I had to.
laugh rang out. "Did you see the look on that dragonborn’s face when we
