Prologue
I stood in front of the mirror, and the person facing me had an uncomfortable smile.
Is this how I’m going to be today ?
I dabbed some shiny red on my lips and smiled as if Weon-gyu was in front of me with his camera.
No. This is just not how I smile.
My eyes fell on the little photo frame on my dressing table. I had fashioned it out of satin ribbons and tiny gemstone-like beads I had found at a faraway store after a week of searching.
Weon-gyu smiled from within the frame. I was in the picture too — seated next to him on the grass, holding his hand and leaning on him. The grass was dotted yellow with the fallen blooms of Ginger Thomas, and I remembered it was in early spring that we had got this picture clicked in the university gardens.
You’re going to look at this photograph and smile, Ji-wooya, years from now when you’ve grown as old as I am now,
he had said.
I smiled.
Fluffing up my hair, I looked at the mirror one last time. I pulled out a satchel from my cupboard and fished out the keys from inside.
