Chapter 1
Same Thing Different School
F IRST DAY AT a new school. A new year and definitely a new me.
I know it’s hard on you but you need to try. We’re here to stay this time. I can feel it.
This is what my mom says every year. Every time we moved. The only thing was I stopped believing that years ago.
Anne hurry up. Finish eating. You don’t want to miss your bus.
My mom hollered from the bathroom.
Ok mom.
A few seconds later I was finished with my food and out the door.
Even though I was a different person this year, I was still going to avoid any form of personal relationship with people. This was my forth school in three years. I was not going to get close to someone if I was just going to pack up and move at the end of the year (or sooner), there was no point, but then again it would be nice to have at least one friend.
I reached the bottomed of the driveway just in time to see the bus to pull around and the driver slam on the brakes in front of me. My first impression of the bus driver was that she had tried to eat a beehive for breakfast and failed miserably.
The bus was already crowded but there was one seat in the high school section, next to a boy about my age. He had shoulder-length hair and sideburns that connected under his chin, with an old jean jacket draped over his shoulder. He looked up from the book he had been reading and moved his backpack to the floor, then patted the floor next to him. He patted the open space next to him. As gracefully as I could, I walked back to him and took a seat.
The boy took a deep breath and I was able to see his nose twist up and start moving. It kind of reminded me of an innocent little bunny rabbit I had seen in a pet store a long time ago. It was so adorable! (The bunny not the kid). I unsuccessfully tried to hold back a laugh as I thought about this boy having a bunny nose. But it escaped before I could contain it.
What’s so funny?
he asked, in a deep mourning voice.
Nothing.
I couldn’t figure out whether I should tell him or not. Just your nose twitching, well it kind of reminded me of a bunny rabbit.
I couldn’t contain it any longer. Once the last word rolled off my tongue, I started laughing hysterically. I wasn’t sure but I think everyone on the bus was looking at me. Probably thinking what the crazy chick laughing about?
I guess it is a little funny,
he said, laying his head against the window. I could feel his eyes staring at me. It made my skin feel like a thousand daggers being shoved into the most delicate part of my skin all at once.
I had to admit though, he was somewhat dreamy. In a fake stuffed animal sort of way. With his fuzzy angel face and his hazel green eyes. Those were staring at me. He might actually be that one friend.
My name’s Jay. What’s yours?
I’m Anne. I really dint mean anything about the whole bunny rabbit nose thing. I’m sorry.
No, that’s ok. I know you didn’t. My dad picks on me all the time for the same thing. I’m used to it.
Jay smiled a warm inviting smile that could melt the world. It was at that moment that I realized that I was starting to lose my mind. I was getting lost in the eyes of an angel. No I was getting lost in the eyes of a boy I hardly knew. I shouldn’t even be talking to Jay, but it was so hard not to. Something about him drew me in.
The bus was crowded worse than before as it made its way through town and a little further (two miles to be exact), in the middle of nowhere, as we finally made it to the high school. The school was a good sized building. To me it resembled the white house, but one story. With brown and red brick walls instead of the white wood paneling. It was bigger than my old school, so I really couldn’t say anything bad about it. (Yep G.H.S, who knows how long I’ll stay this time.) I stood up as everyone else did but Jay pulled my arm, making me sit back down. Wait let everyone else go first. Then go. Maybe you won’t get trampled on,
he informed me with a smart-alecky grin.
Okay?
So what classes do you have?
I-I um. I have history first hour,
I managed to stutter. Why was I starting to stutter? What was it about this kid? I felt in the short time that I knew Jay that I had known him all my life.
