Introduction
My childhood, like that of most kids born in the 80s, was filled with memories of giggles in the neighbourhood as we played street games and enjoyed playing house and make-believe. We had such a vibrant culture of group play that a typical day in our lives involved hitting the streets as soon as homework and chores were done and only coming back just in time for dinner preparation.
Now you can be sure that whenever you have kids playing together, often without supervision, some nasty remarks will be made. That is just the nature of kids as they are not mature enough to voice their observations and opinions in a sensitive manner.
The earliest memories I have of my self-worth were those of feeling like I didn’t fit in. I had a skinny frame and a squint eye. I remember not being picked for a lot of games because of comments such as she won’t be able to catch anything – her eyes are squint
or something like she can’t be in our team, she will break a bone
.
Much of what shapes how we think about ourselves comes from the words uttered about us so it’s no surprise that my early childhood was filled with insecurities. I look at myself now and it’s hard to locate that insecure and timid little girl. It almost feels like a miracle that I can stand tall and run with all my might towards the dreams that are planted in my heart, let alone boldly echo them in front of people without fear of judgement.
Before you think that my limitations miraculously evaporated overnight, I want you to consider that life is a long process of ups and downs. This can transform us to new versions of ourselves if we choose to allow the lessons to refine us rather than crush us.
In this book, I will share the key moments in my life’s journey that have played a huge role in shaping
