Introduction: Emotions and Weight Loss
What do you do when you experience strong emotions like anger, sadness, or frustration?
Do you turn to food to try and curb those emotions and make yourself feel better? Does food give you a sensation of comfort at that moment, even though you end up feeling guilty or worse as a result of eating so much?
If this situation sounds familiar, it could mean that you have a complicated relationship with food. If you find yourself experiencing this situation often, you might end up feeling guilty even after eating your regular meals. This type of relationship can put you at the risk of developing some kind of eating disorder.
Some commonly known eating disorders include bulimia and anorexia nervosa. All over the world, people from all walks of life struggle with such health issues. However, this book isn't intended for people who identify with these conditions. Instead, it is aimed at people like you. Ordinary people who find themselves struggling with their emotions and have trouble cutting back on high-calorie, high-fat, unhealthy foods, especially when they feel like eating is the only way to control their emotions. This book is for people who have tried different kinds of diets but have experienced very little success.
If you identify with any of these issues, know that you are not alone and this book was written just for you.
Binge eating or consuming copious amounts of unhealthy food as a means to cope with one's feelings is known as emotional eating. This condition also applies to those who eat for reasons other than hunger. Some people eat to reward themselves, some eat because of low self-esteem, and some people eat as a means to distract themselves from any strenuous situations they experience.
If you believe that you have been struggling with this condition, it doesn't mean that you cannot change things for the better. It simply means that you need to learn how to cope with your emotions in a different way so that you can listen to your body naturally telling you when it’s hungry. The good news? There are many steps you can take to turn your life around—and through this book, we will go through those steps together.
I am a qualified psychotherapist, and I presently work at an Eating Disorder Clinic. I have successfully treated dozens of patients who struggle with emotional eating and I have also run numerous, flourishing mindfulness groups for people from all walks of life. Even beginners have found success through the methods that I share with them. I also worked at a charity based in the UK where I helped people learn more about making healthier choices in life. One of the biggest challenges of emotional eating is that it interferes with your ability to make healthy food choices. But this doesn't have to define who you are. If you are ready to change your life through mindfulness, turn the page and let's begin.
Chapter 1: All About Emotional Eating
Emotional eating is something people do when they struggle with their emotions. Instead of dealing with those emotions, emotional eaters turn to food to either suppress their feelings or avoid addressing them. Usually, people struggle with a negative range of emotions such as fear, loneliness, anger, frustration, or sadness.
If you have a tendency toward emotional eating, you will find yourself reaching for food, but not to satisfy your physical hunger. You eat when you are stressed, you eat when you feel like you need to reward yourself, and or
