Overview
Into Thin Air was published in 1997 by journalist and outdoorsman Jon Krakauer. The book focuses on the events surrounding the 1996 Mount Everest disaster, of which the author was a survivor.
In 1996, New Zealander mountaineering expert Robert Hall led a commercial expedition to climb the mountain. Krakauer joined this expedition while on assignment for Outside magazine. Those who have attempted to climb the mountain range from semi-sane quixotic adventurers to the thousands of Sherpas who have acted as guides and porters to foreign expeditions.
The large number of inexperienced climbers on Mount Everest in the 1996 season contributed to bottlenecks. Regulations may thus be needed to limit the number of climbers on the mountain. Other reforms could also improve
